Nano-tubes are freakishly more expensive than titanium. In fact, in real space missions not even titanium gets selected most of the time due to its high price.

People who enter into STEM like Engineers and Scientists are all smart. I just think its priorities that leads them to the two different professions. One set aims at building up on their intellect and attaining the ultimate understanding and the other set uses their smarts to earn money and lead a well paid life. I wouldn't judge either motive as better than the other

When I was in High School the school actively did there best to make it clear STEM classes where meant primarily for the girls and if you where a boy interested in any of the advanced classes the counselors would try to deter you for signing up, unless it was a state mandatory class like algebra or biology. There reasoning was women are minorities in STEM professions so interested females in high school should take priority to help increase the numbers of professional Female STEM works. Did not realize until after high school, just how sexist the school was actually being.

The scientist vs engineer debate is stupid, they both have their own, very important separate functions. Without physicists, engineers wouldn't be able to create ANYTHING, since their work is based on physical discoveries and principles. Without engineers, we could know so many things about the universe, but we wouldn't be able to use it for anything. Both are very important. Let's all keep this in mind: None of them could create ANYTHING without the discoveries of mathematicians :)
@TheSLK66

Mathematicians provide the tools to understand any idea, no matter how abstract. Physicists apply them to understand our reality and provide answers as to why anything works, engineers learn from them to shape our reality and provide physical tools to further probe reality and aid physicists.

Other than the hotness that is Kaley Cuoco there wasn't anything I found worth watching on BBT but I was aware of it being a very popular show and I had seen Sheldon's umpa lumpa Engineer reference mentioned in popular culture. It always made me chuckle as Sheldon I believe was a Physicist on the show. In my undergrad Engineering College a few of us in one of the computer labs "got our hands on" the incoming freshmen SAT scores and we sorted them by declared major. Tellingly the two lowest avg. SAT scores were Education and Journalism. The top score went to Engineering with Physics majors a very close second (a Ph.D. Aerospace/Computer Engineer who works for a large American defense contractor's Missile Systems company.

Theoretical physics mainly exists to satisfy curiosity. And that's what Sheldon cares the most about. Satisfying his burning curiosity about the hidden secrets of the universe. Doing something *practical* with said secrets doesn't matter so much to him. It's all about curiosity.
@SelectiveApathy82
@SelectiveApathy82 3 жыл бұрын
Theoretical scientists have no interest in solving practical real-world problems. The real world is boring for them. If their work has indirect real-world applications, that's a "nice to have". But their primary motivation is answering abstract questions about the universe. It's a purely intellectual and curious pursuit. They'd do it even if it paid a low salary.

Sheldon does live in a dream world. Carbon nanotubes are still very much on the bleeding edge. And in theory they should be cheaper. But currently they are still one of the most expensive substances on the planet Earth. Or for all intensive purposes the universe. And I'm sure I could come up with a few more reasons. But I feel like the astronomical cost of carbon nanotubes themselves that would be prohibitive.

You can spin nano tubes into strands and strings, the problem is that they are not cheap and ultimately would need to be made like carbon fiber to serve as a strong structural material. However, radiation and exposure to vacuum might require coatings to protect it so it's not only more expensive but likely less suited for a part meant to sit outside the space station.

@TheWrathfulHippie It means I already know the difference between relevant presentation of theories or fact and meaningless mention of the stuff as junk/pop science.

as a decently intelligent guy, i would say engineering is at an entirely different level of thought process. i think its very comical to even contemplate how brainy scientist can possibly believe there fancy degree on the wall and pricey schooling amount to anything other then conjecture and brain fucking. its the equivalent of a color designer stating that they are far more important then a concept artist. exactly.

Lets watch Sheldon walk into a construction site and watch what happens when he says what he did from 0:25 to 0:33 to a bunch of carpenters. Sheldon would be empty headed when figuring out how to approach doing construction work let alone doing the physical labor it requires. Without complete comparison, Sheldon is talking about these engineers as how certain royalty would see themselves above servants or peasants. Sheldon is prolifically brilliant but has the personality of a spoiled immature brat who sees himself as a royal magistrate in conparison to engineers

@TheWrathfulHippie I never said i was a scientist -_-, but I respect them and science which is why I don't enjoy the gimmick. Its also annoying because American culture has too often, and now ever more with funding and money so tight, and the misappropriation of it, so that people blame NASA for the budget problems, that people just look down on sciences these days. Then they will wonder what happened when other countries overtake us products.
