When I watch your wonderful film of the 4014, complete with caboose, it makes the world seem right ! ! ! ! ! !

Nice shoutout to dad😊Great ground shots and sound, and awesome drone footage as well! Big boy engine is the star but that little caboose is pretty dang cute 🥰 Wish more trains still had them. Very well done Dan and Charles 👏

Sure had a wonderful experience with ya Dan chasing this thing through the scenery of Nevada. Learned a great deal the amount of effort it takes to gather footage for your Railfan Dan Productions channel, not to mention getting it all edited into a video. Great job buddy! Dad

Thank you for this beautiful video of the Union Pacific's Big Boy #4024 crossing Nevada's Great Basin, Dan! I appreciate the time and effort that you put into this video. The Great Basin is fascinating area of the United States. You have given us an idea of what the portion of the Great Basin that the Union Pacific Railroad traverses through looks like with this video. Thank you to your dad for driving you as you paced the Big Boy. (Posted 17 August 2024 at 2354 CDT.)

Thanks so much Thomas glad you enjoyed! My dad reads most of these comments so he is appreciative of your and others recognition. He really was a major help with everything I captured between Salt Lake City and the Feather River Canyon.

This chase was in the middle of summer, so I guess the weather was crazy hot. Most of the areas are pretty dry and dead. But others are nice and green. I'm sure this was a fantastic road trip for you and your dad. The footage is awesome from start to finish. The Big Boy can still fly, his speed was very impressive. Lots of people enjoyed his presence along the route. Great upload Dan, thank you for the long movie.

Thanks so much Z! Yes it was HOT. Hot enough that I was nervous putting the drones up for extended periods in such heat but they did great. I would not choose to do railfan trips in the middle of the Summer for the heat reason but couldn't miss the 4014! Glad you enjoyed this my friend. More to come.

I've been on pins and needles all day waiting to watch this one! My favorite so far, except maybe the cayon one, it's so hard to choose! Lol you and Railfan Dad must have had a great time together on this trip ❤ what an amazing experience for you both!🇺🇸 Your mix of music and sound were as usual spot on! I could go on and on but you know how much we enjoy your videos!! 😉 We will definitely check out your friends sites, you haven't steered us wrong yet with your suggestions. 👍🤗

Generally I am not a fan of drone work however even I must say this video is exceptional. Excellent coverage of 4014 across Nevada and I like the mix of actual sound + music.
@TheRailfanDan3 ай бұрын
Well thanks very much that's a high compliment then. It's a big deal to me to add actual audio to drone footage with steam engines but at some point it does get very repetitive so I like to break that up with music.

Northern Nevada has some beautiful scenery, and the WP mainline runs through some remote areas off the beaten path. I've traveled on the California Zephyr both east and westbound, but unfortunately the stretch region east of Winnemucca is traversed in darkness. I've driven across Nevada, but that trip was also at night. Wonderful footage you shot here, you captured the highlights wonderfully. It's unfortunate about Arnold Loop, but sometimes you can't have it all. Another fantastic video nevertheless. 👍🏆🍻
@TheRailfanDan4 ай бұрын
Yeah kind of too bad it's during the night on the Zephyr here. Well I'm glad I could finally give you a look at it! Yes Arnold Loop really was the plan but that changed last minute. I'm alright with it though. That curve under the freeway in the beginning of the video was pretty decent too.

What is it the Big Boy is pulling around? It doesn't look like passenger cars except for the caboose. Lots of nice scenarios but ff watching. No time, no mood, to look at every minute. The short versions works better.
@TheRailfanDan4 ай бұрын
Yes this is a longer one. Pulling box and covered hopper cars. UP said they opted to haul freight cars since the Big Boys were built for freight.
@Stefan_Boerjesson4 ай бұрын
@@TheRailfanDan Why pull around such cars instead of paying passengers? Looks odd to me.
@johnburger32876 күн бұрын
@@Stefan_Boerjesson First, the Big Boys were freight engines, they never hauled passenger trains. Second, the Big Boy is a public relations enterprise for the UP. The UP does not sell passenger tickets. They normally have a passenger excursion at some point during each outing. The trip is sponsored by a local organization not the UP and the UP does not sell the tickets. In the case of the 150th anniversary of the golden spike here in Utah in 2019 the Utah Historical Society sponsored the excursion. My wife and I rode behind 4014 and 844 from Ogden UT to Evanston WY. That is the original route that the Big Boys were designed and built for. That was the first passenger excursion of 4014 and double heading with 844 will probably never happen again. The trip included private access the the passenger cars that nobody rides in and the locomotive the day before the trip, breakfast the day of the trip, lunch in Evanston WY and a bus ride back to Ogden. I was in the Big Boy cab and sat in Ed Dickens seat. Cost? Not cheap. On that trip dome seats were $5000. Coach seats were $3000. Dome seats sold out in one day. My wife and I got coach seats in the dome car Columbine. 50% of the cost was tax deductible.
@Stefan_Boerjesson6 күн бұрын
@@johnburger3287 Thanks a lot for Your reply! Yes, Big Boy was built for heavy cargo trains. I know Amtrack runs passenger trains but, as You say, UP doesn't. My thought was that passenger tickets would sell like butter melting in the pan, and provide means for the maintenance. Being a member of a veteran railroad I know that maintenance costs.
