Big Bull Jabulani Comes to Collect Baby Elephant, Khanyisa! Plus: Khanyisa vs the Orphanage Tree 🌳

HERD Elephant Orphanage South Africa

HERD Elephant Orphanage South Africa

Күн бұрын

After lots of daily toil to keep Khanyisa away from one of the new trees alongside the orphanage garden, the calf managed to sneak her way to it and debranch the lower reaches. It took many months to grow and will require some TLC to return it to its former glory so it can grow tall and strong and tower over the garden. Don’t worry, though! It is not Fenya’s tree - Fenya’s padda boom (toad tree) is planted by the kitchen and is further from Khanyisa’s prying trunk.
Carers Herman and Reply spend time with Khanyisa in the garden, while she grazes - keeping her company as her herd would in the bush.
Watch as Reply and Khanyisa leave with Adine to meet up with the big herd and Khanyisa tries to veer off and demolish another tree. She certainly is learning vital elephant skills, wanting to feed herself on branches and leaves 🍃 wherever they may be.
Jabulani comes to collect Khanyisa as she runs out of the orphanage path to join the greater reserve. It’s a precious moment as little trunk meets big trunk and the two head off to catch up with the rest of the elephants on their walk into the wild.
Thank you for joining us on this excursion!

Big brother Jabu coming to get his little sister for another day of adventures out in the wild is just so sweet he’s such a gentle kind elephant and it’s easy to see that Khanyisa loves him. I’ve loved watching their relationship bloom over time starting when Jabulani would visit Sunshine at the fence every day after she arrived to those first trunk to trunk touches it’s been so amazing to watch how easily they connected perhaps because Jabu understood what Khanyisa was going through because he lived through trauma himself. It’s beautiful that he was her first elephant connection it’s so fitting as well.💖💖🐘🐘

@herdelephantorphanage
@herdelephantorphanage 2 жыл бұрын
There is a big problem with calves being killed if they are found to be orphaned, by park officials, for reasons like convenience or if they were orphaned for natural reasons, and not human-related causes, and so the orphans don’t reach rehab orphanages like HERD. Many orphans are not found in time either and don’t make it. Timisa, Kumbura and Jabulani were all orphans who were rescued and integrated into our herd, and the original herd from Zimbabwe were also orphans, rescued from Zimbabwe and brought to South Africa.

In some of the morning nursery videos (before joining the herd for the daily walk/forage), Adine mentions that they spent moments in the morning and night "bonding" with Khanyisa (human to baby elephant). Similar to the bonding a mother Ellie would give (as in 24 hour bobding)...except both elephant herd and humans take turns proving the all-day bonding. The human-time bonding is spent picking grass for her to eat, rubbing her body, talking to her, feeding her the bottles, singing her bedtime lullabies, and feeding her sweet potatoes and Marika fruit. This time also allows them to notice up-close her tusk growth and general health. The 24 hr bonding (ellie herd/human/sheep) helps the baby elephant to not-stress and gives 24 hour companionship. Adine mentioned in videos that this bonding keeps an orphaned baby elephant's fragile life (the first 4 years) steady and healthy.

A special acknowledgement to those running the orphanage. Watching the infant and seeing that beautiful majestic bull was awe inspiring but none of it would be possible if it weren't for caretakers..awesome job you do..✌️✌️

I'm pretty sure that it was Zindoga that the blood was taken from for Khanyisa's blood transfusion. I love the special relationship that Khanyisa and Jabulani have ❤️🐘🐘
