Just a heads up. You don't need to pull the radiator, the intercooler, or move the condenser to do this job. When you take the timing cover off and lift the lifters, just pull the cam out part way to the radiator, then un-bolf the timing cover gear housing and pull it forward and fish the cam gear through it. Clean it up, put the new gasket on and reassemble, be sure to use locktite on all the bolts. Had to do mine., so I'm speaking from experience. One other thing. Put the fron main seal in with the front cover bolts loose. Use the front seal to help line up the front cover, if you dont do it this way you may have a front seal leak fairly quickly.

Thanks for the tips, didn’t know you could fish the cam gear through the cover. This was my first time doing this and have only seen other guys do it by taking the radiator out.

You cannot fish cam gear through case I’ve tried it.

At about 1 minute and 30 seconds into the video I would’ve looked at my father in-law and said. Looks like you need a new truck.

I’m leaking a quart a day. Same year as this one. Leaking around the turbo, rear main seal, front seal, oil pan and looks like the valve body as well.

I would bet 100 bucks you have leaking front seal and timing cover. Everything else is from those leaks

mine started to leak after I started using the 10w30 oil on my 2019 ram Cummins with 98k miles. before that I used only 5w40 in the winter and 15w40 in the summer. I verified it was indeed leaking from main front gear housing that requires removing cam. I took all the idler pulley, tensioner, fan and crank pulley off. turns out, all the front cover bolts were slightly loose, tightened up all the front cover bolts and tighten about 1/8 to almost 1/4 of turn on all the bolts. Not sure if at factory they may not tighten it enough or may have loosen on their own. after tightening the bolts, I put all pulleys and belt back on and went back to the 15w40 conventional since it was summer again. mine is emission deleted so synthetic is not a must in the summer. 10500 miles later so far, no leaks. maybe give this a shot first before doing a tear down like this.

@22:16 - I believe you screwed up NOT putting the timing cover seal on before putting the cover on. By putting it on first you better-center the crank-hole with the seal. Otherwise with the cover already bolted down it could be constantly pulling the seal to one side of the crank.

Yeah I definitely screwed up on that, wasn’t thinking when I did it.

I have to do this on my 2018 w/80,000 miles on it. Roughly how many hours did it take you?
@boosthuntergarage
@boosthuntergarage 8 ай бұрын
I would say it was somewhere between 15-20 hours. I definitely wasn’t rushing doing it. It was my first time working on a 4th gen so I waisted time figuring out how some of the front end comes apart and taking parts off I didn’t need too

My 18 3500 started leaking at about 40,000 miles and the dealership couldn’t find a leak and blamed it on a sloppy oil change that it did also have but it’s still leaking at the main seals at least and now back in the shop under warranty thankfully. Wish me luck. Glad it started leaking early.

My 2018 has been in the dealership for a combined 4 months 4 xs for this repair and they haven't succeeded yet. I hate this truck. Also my oil pan has rust spots nearly all the way through.

Currently doing this now not sure if i should use rtv on the housing gaskrt or just install the gasket dry worried if i use rtv together with the gasket it wont seal
@boosthuntergarage

I’m personally a big fan of rtv, it’s never done me wrong. The way these engines leak I like to use it as much as I can but I’m also no professional
@serbia991
@serbia991 2 ай бұрын
@@boosthuntergarage ya looking at the oem procedure it doesn't show to use rtv on the gasket only were the pan meets the housing I'll probably just use some permatex tac spray to hold it in place

Do you only take off the oil pan if you drop the taps? I am being quoted for this repair, but with the oil pan taken off.
@boosthuntergarage
@boosthuntergarage 8 ай бұрын
I would only take the pan off if I dropped the tappets just cause it would be a lot more work to fully pull the pan. Only benefit of pulling the pan is getting a new full gasket instead of piecing the gasket together at the front of the pan. So far haven’t had any problems with piecing it together and using a healthy amount of rtv, seen lots of other guys do it this way also

So did you find the issue of the oil leak? My 2018 is doing the same thing. I replaced the ccv filter at 60k miles and it started leaking on the front of the engine shortly after that.
@boosthuntergarage
@boosthuntergarage 7 ай бұрын
I can’t say I found the exact cause of the leak, other than it was leaking between the block and timing case. So far the repair has held up and it’s not leaking again. So assuming bad gasket from factory or not torqued down good enough
@Mark-ri8nr

For gasket maker I used permatex ultra black and for parts all you should need is a front timing case gasket and front main seal. Mahle JV5076 or Fel-pro TCS46031 should be the gasket sets
