I thought it was going to be really good. You take the incredibly powerful piece of cinematography that was captain marvel and add not one, but TWO more strong women who's bio and backstory is "woman. Minority. Men suck. Got powers" and one of them pretty much exists entirely to constantly mention how cool brie larson is like a character in a steven segal movie, and the bad guy is just the bad guy from a more successful marvel movie race and gender swapped which obviously makes her much more powerful, and that everyone involved made sure to tell everyone if it gets bad reviews itll just be racist sexist toxix fanboys before the film even released or the first review dropped? How could it be bad???? It's easy to say you saw it coming in hindsight, but there's no way. It's a recipe for the perfect movie.

The box office earnings don't tell the whole story. If you look at the number of tickets sold, it gets even worse. A Deadline article quoted EntTelligence who record numbers of tickets sold. Marvels got just 3.3m in the opening weekend. That's 40% down on Eternals which got 5.5m. You'd need a heart of stone not to laugh. BOX OFFICE MAGIC!

Re the increased ticket prices- Ever since around the time No Way Home came out, Marvel has been inflating its opening weekend box office by having the top 3 US theatre chains add $1-2 extra to the ticket price. That's certainly something to keep in mind when they're bragging about their opening weekends. Not that bragging applies to this movie, lol. Also, in one my area's biggest theatres, it was $16 to see the movie last weekend, and I was wondering if that would affect people going at all. That price is pretty steep for a movie that everyone knew would be mediocre at best.

Yeah, it must have cost a ton, considering how many times it was delayed. Variety's recent article about a "A Crisis at Marvel" said it had 4 weeks of reshoots to try to make the story make sense, heh. I know they did reshoots in Aug 2022, and it was reported this April that it was undergoing a "massive overhaul". As for the money spent- the Variety article said it was $250 million. But Disney's a bit notorious for underreporting its costs, so I'd certainly guess it was more than that.

People have to love those characters first, before that even matters. The MCU and DCEU were golden because they featured characters we grew up with and loved and passed down to our children, who passed it down to theirs. The Rippaverse has not stood the test of time, yet. It's very green. You have a better chance of succeeding with a Jupiter Ascending universe of films. That series was entertaining, by the way, but it was canceled. Those characters don't have the necessary history to create a bond that would generate another juggernaut series of films and neither does the Ripperverse. Can you even name one character from the Rippaverse that you actually love; that you have a wallpaper of; that you're willing to buy toys of? No comicbook company is going to come out of the gate and do what the big two did. It's not as simple as having drive, talent, and good stories. They don't have enough skin in the game. It's why Milestone and Image failed. They had some good characters, bigger talent, recognition, and backing than the Rippaverse, and yet they still failed. If the Rippaverse Studios arrives and somehow manages to do what you're suggesting, it would be one of the greatest success stories of all time.

Disney purchased marvel n star wars to attract the male audience as it was primarily a female brand . They clearly havent got a clue on making anything to get men to watch stuff. Or even women , barbie showed you can aim at a specific market and make a ton of money . Obviously they marketed it and made it better

I've never once listened to actor interviews to sell me to go see a film. Its all about the trailer and this films trailer said all I needed to know to persuade me to not go and see it. Napoleon's trailer for example has got me intrigued to go see it just like oppenheimer.

Captain Marvel (2019) only made good money at the box office cause people were very hyped for the next avengers movie endgame and they wanted to see if in captain marvel would have something important to carry over for the endgame movie. That's it. If captain marvel had been released after avengers endgame nobody would cared about it.

I will say this, absent the politics of Hollywood, lots of people aren’t spending money where they don’t need to. Restaurants where I live aren’t as busy this Memorial Day Weekend too. And that goes back further than this. Hollywood will really need to have to stir a true desire to see a movie if they want to make money. Hence Barbie and Mario or Sound of Freedom. The world economy is in a steep down turn.

It was different during the Great Recession (and its fallout) in the late 2000s/early 10s. I remember the media noting that even though people had cut back in a number of areas, they were still flocking to theatres as much as ever because they wanted escapism. This was when the MCU was in full steam, with hits like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and especially The Avengers. Of course, The Powers That Be have decided since then that we shouldn't have escapism in movies, so people don't automatically turn to the theatres for that anymore.
