What is the attraction with Dumaguete in Negros? Why do so many expats/ foreigners live/retire to Dumaguete?
You must also visit the Silliman University Campus. A prestigious University in downtown Dumaguete, Negros, Philippines. Appears to be a wonderful environment in which to study. I was a University Photographer in west London photographing students, staff and dignitaries for publicity purposes for ten years.
The Philippines should be on everyone’s bucket list with its beautiful white sand beaches, fabulous idyllic islands, turquoise sea and stunning scenery. The Philippines is a traveller’s paradise and regularly included in top ten favorite places to visit in Asia and affordable, favorite world holiday destination.
Many foreigners/expats choose the Philippines as the best country to retire in Asia and live in paradise. The Philippines is one of the cheapest countries to live in the world with its low cost of living and all year sunshine. Retiring in the Philippines is affordable on a budget of less than $1000 per month.
Filipinos are welcome and warm people. Filipinos are often regarded as the most friendliest nation in Asia and nicest people in the world. English is widely spoken throughout the country. The Philippines is included in the top ten English speaking countries in the world. The majority of Filipinos are highly proficient in English, so it is very easy to strike up a conversation and make new friends.

I lived in Dumaguete for a while in 2016-2017... It was so boring that I was frequently catching the ferry to Cebu, so I ended up moving there. I look at Dumaguete as an old folks home.

You ask what is the attraction in Dumaguete? Then you conclude not understanding why so many ex pats are there... I was in Dumaguete several months only, so I don't claim to know all the ends and outs within or around the city, however, the things I liked in Dumaguete is what I'm getting away from in the big city. Having lived in Southern California near Los Angeles I can tell you that I no longer want anything the big city has to offer. Including, but not limited to: Hollywood, professional sports such as the NFL, NBA, Disneyland, world largest zoos, 12 lane highways, the crime and expense to live there...... To pinpoint what I liked in Dumaguete: 1. Very cheap to live there: I could eat for a buck fifty, even got a senior discount. For dinner I could pick any restaurant on the blvd and eat for less than ten bucks... In California you can't even buy a burrito for less than ten bucks, and is not a complete dinner.... 2. Crime: I often walked at night in Dumaguete, I never felt the presence of danger... In Los Angeles you can't even stop in your car at a gas station a night for fear you'll be held up.... 3. Traffic: you mentioned Dumaguete was very busy, etc... Try driving to the LA airport and be stuck in traffic even with 6 lanes going in one direction, 6 lanes going the opposite direction... 4. Rent: I had an apartment 10 minutes walk from the Robinson's mall, paid $260 per month, fully furnished, free wifi, HBO, back up generator, no brown or black out. In Southern California you'll pay as much as $1000.00 US for ONE room. And is not furnished..... 5. Seniors are respected in Dumaguete as the rest of the Philippines... In California seniors are a burden. 6. Dumaguete is centralized within the PI so you can fly north or south very cheap.... 7. Dating: The townspeople are always eager to introduce you to some lady if you're interested in meeting someone.... If you found nothing to do, or nothing that attracted you in Dumaguete maybe you're not ready to retire and enjoy a low cost, low key, peaceful lifestyle with friendly townspeople..... Finally, if you want to enjoy a slightly different scenery around Dumaguete, there're several tourist spots and resorts to visit within 30 minutes of downtown....

Uhm, because the place & area where you lived there and the carenderia where you ate from are the not so nice areas in town. I lived there for about 5 years, when my husband had a school related job. We lived in a beautiful house and ate in the nice restaurants there. We really loved it! You could still get a lifestyle there comparable to the West. Not exactly cheap by local standards, but cheaper than the comparable standards that you would have in the west (ex. living in a beautiful modern house complete with pool and modern amenities). So you can’t really judge a place based on just one area that you lived in for a very short period. After all, I wouldn’t judge what the rest of London is based on Barking & Dagenham. 😮

Most of the reasons expats give for living in Dumagete apply to many other Ph cities. Busy transit hub is one that makes sense. Could you do a video about which Ph airports tend to have the most affordable flights to the UK, states and Aus? Seems like economies of scale would favor Manilla but maybe others are cheap too.

in the early 80s, I was intrigued why two of my British friends would hurry to go Dumaguete ,once they landed in Manila . They travelled then twice a year and would stay there for at least 2 mos. I was their friend in Manila . I did visit Duma last year and was not impressed . They have only one Mall . I just follow another vlogger from the US . His budget is less than 2k per month ,but he resides in a condo in BGC .His health insurance is around $250 and is tied to the number one Medical Center in the Phils which is St Luke .You should do a vlog of BGC in the future !

Thanks for your appreciation. Have you considered other places apart from Dumaguete. I prefer the condo to house life, where I've got a nice balcony to view over a city. Tbh it doesn't really make much difference if you're in Cebu, Davao or Iloilo as most cities over the same malls etc., But for me Dumaguete is too small. Whilst you're in Dumaguete I'd also scoot up to Bacolod and Iloilo for comparison. Let me know how you get on!

I have lived in Dumaguete for the last 6 years. I remember telling my friends a few years ago when this place opens up again we will see more expats than ever arrive. Well I underestimated the amount by a long shot, not that it's bad but there are so many Western people here now. IMHO cities nearby are a better option, Tanjay, Dauin, Siaton and San Jose are all much smaller and have less traffic. The diversion road crossing Jose Romero has made Valencia to Dumaguete a much longer commute. For me I agree Dumaguete has the hospitals and shopping needed to live well, but get in and get out. Life is better outside the town a bit.

Living in Cebu City i was looking for another location to move so i checked out dumaguete because I heard great things. But when I got there it was less friendly than Cebu city. The Filipino guards and drivers wouldn’t speak back to me only to my Filipina fiancée and most of the expats/ foreigners would give me dirty looks and pull there Filipina close. But I guess me being in my 40’s and athletic/ physically fit plays a part with other foreigners. The Filipinas were very friendly and welcoming though.

Vloggers are all liars, they are psychos, they do not and can not tell the truth or their visa will not be extended, they will be black listed if they do not say nice things about everything. To answer your question: Like everywhere in the Philippines, a superficial observation will give you no proper information. Especially people who are used to european and american city planning, the lack of city planning in general, makes a lot of things difficult. The younger audience and most expats lives and roams a bit away from the seafront, Dauin and so on. In the city itself north of the Dumaguete port and inside the city but not Rizal Boulvevard - it belongs to those who retire.. Also the videos about stuff like "Why not" is outdated and for another audience And yes, thats another reason, you have a proper city nearby, that you can reach in just a few minutes, traffic is never that worse that you take hours as near other cities And no, going to the second street behind the Boulevard will not reveal a different world - like I said, if you dont know where the places are, you get a quite different impression of the city. In the Philippines its best to have a friend there in your age range, to tell you where the things are. Otherwise you maybe could talk with someone and the person has a completely different impression because he just didnt see what you looked at, but other things. There are great beaches, but you have to drive a few minutes outside. If you dont want to drive that long, you can go to "okay" beaches like Silliman Beach or Melrose Beach. Also, if it might happen often to you that people look at you in contempt, when others tell they look at them with smiles and eager to interact - then, well maybe, its not them or the city: Its you. Also to have a well kempt general appearance could help... I heard. What people like about Dumaguete is that the people are nice, to the overwhelming majority of us foreigners. And that there is a sense of community,. Speaking about community: What you say about vloggers in one place.. If you can imagine what they are talking about, how about to visit instead of speculating. This is one of the greatest thing you can do as a vlogger, because it takes you further, if you exchange yourself with others, share experiences and information and get it also. But with one thing I am on the same page as you: Dumaguete (+ Surroundings) isnt the right city for you.
