Unavoidable brain fade and a slip of the tongue meant we referred to the Street Triple as the Speed Triple early on in the video, we know. Feel free to point it out in the comments anyway.
Once you've done that, start the video again and enjoy our Yamaha MT-09 review and comparison with the Triumph Street Triple 765 RS.
LET'S HYPOTHESIZE that you’ve got a mate who espouses the virtues of three-cylinder engines at every opportunity; every time you meet him for a coffee at your local bike meet, he bangs on about how his beloved triples offer a perfect balance between smooth, high revving inline four-cylinder power and the mid-range grunt of a twin.
And that’s before he proceeds to tell you about the character of his favourite engine configuration.
You think you’re immune to it but over time, the constant pro-three-cylinder rhetoric starts to rub off. You find yourself wanting to suckle on the nipple of the triple…
Fortunately, you’re not short of choice. Two of the most exciting three-cylinder bikes to grace showrooms in 2017 are Yamaha’s eye-catching, budget priced and updated-for-2017 MT-09 and the new Triumph Speed Triple 765 RS - the range-topping model in the family of new Speed Triples. We plumped for the top-bollock RS not just because it’s got the most power and best spec of all the new Street Triples, but also because we wanted to see whether, if you’re in the market for a naked three-cylinder, you need to spend RS money to get the best bike.

Comparing the £7800 Yam to the range topping 765RS which is £2100 more.. then commenting on how much better all the extras are on the RS? Hardly a good comparison review. The 09 is closer pitched to the Triple S at £8k.

With the price difference, the MT can upgrade to Ohlins front folk cartridges, brembo M50 calipers, and a lovely akrapovic exhaust and a Dino tune. That's enough to up the handling, braking, and power to another level. Then they can compare it to the RS.

Rene, of course it would be more apples to apples, bit then the Triumph crowd would crap all over this channel. $2,000 difference is the biggest stat the Triumph can't beat. Not to mention cost of ownership and aftermarket. Yamaha has such a huge dealer network.

So shitty fueling and jerky power delivery, along with bad suspension = "more character and spirit" and "more fun to ride", right. Whereas the Street Triple is actually well done, smooth, more precise; better designed and better built, which makes it a "boring old man's bike", got it. lol

I've rode both, bought the MT09, put Ohlins front and back and saved about $3500. The fueling is reworked for 17s and up and if you are really picky a $200 flash will fix that as well.

I owned a new 2014 STR675 then traded it for a new 2014 MT09. The STR was by far the better handling bike, once it was set up for me, and build quality but it just didn't have the grin factor or grunt of the MT. At the time there was only about £600 difference which made the STR more desirable BUT the main dealer servicing costs for the Triumph were just silly, more than twice the cost of the Yamaha. I covered around 16k miles on both bikes, STR cost over £750 servicing where as the MT was just over £300 (600/6,000/12,000). I now have a Tracer 900, but will likely return to the MT09 when the SP model comes out. This was a poor comparison, premium V budget, should have been the lower spec ST with a similar setup. Do this again when the 09SP comes out but with a comparable ST.

I'm not sure how you come to your conclusions. The Triumph seems to trump the MT-09 in pretty much every way, and IMHO looks much better (I can't fathom how you say the MT-09 gets noticed). You even seem to play down the new TFT screen, which is one of the best looking controls panels I've seen on a bike, and put it on par with the MT-09's 1980's Casio watch style display. Bizarre.

The price difference alone makes the mt a better bike. For the difference you can slap some ohlins sus, upgrade your brakes and do a tune and exhaust and have a much better bike. Also, pretty sure there weren't many 80s bikes with an offset digital dash

Not a word regarding predicted reliability. My guess is the Yamaha will be bulletproof and dependable as the sunrise. Combine that reliability with a far more extensive dealer network and the Yamaha trumps the Triumph. The lower price point of the MT-09 is icing on the cake. Plus, our Triumph dealership is not all that user friendly. Contrast that with the Yamaha facility. Those guys are an absolute pleasure to be around.

I agree with everything you said pretty much. The only detail you didn't press was that Triumph RS is almost 3 Grand more (USD) than the Yamaha. That is a very very big deal. They routinely have Aprilia Tuono's and BMW S1000R's on sale for the same price (or less) than that Triumph... So... Yeah, take this review with a grain

Yesterday I tested the Street Triple RS, loved the look of it and amazed that it weighs 166kg, really thought I would love it, i should state that my last bike for a few years was a v strom loved the comfort, less happy with the power, the RS felt more like a sports bike, more forward position with the wind battering the visor, probably time would allow for the adjustment, but i really didn't feel the urge to go fast on it. i then went to a yamaha dealer to try the MT09, luckily it was out on loan and i had to take out the MT10, what a bike, just loved it from the start, even in busy traffic before i got the chance to use the awesome power, so i would instantly recommend the MT10 over the RS, I may go and try the MT09 now, but i think I may be disappointed after the MT10!

I do have a 2013 Street triple and I love it but I really wish Triumph had done a better job on the visual, there is not much difference in the look to the previous models and to be honest I prefer the previous headlight. Anyway a great bike but does misses out on the look. That's my opinion. I'm probably gonna be looking for the z900.

TR5T +1 I agree, I had 13 different faults on my triumph in 2 months. I got rid of it after 3 months. I'm not encouraged to buy another triumph but the poor quality finish on the Yamaha isn't enticing either. Maybe it was too much of a stretch for these two machines to match the price/performance balance of the Z900? That's where I would be looking. Oh and wearing the hump-back leathers? I have just graduated from college, have just started a decent job, and I am moving on from my first bike which was too much bike for me in the first place. Screw the mt09 unless it has upgraded suspension, I want the SP or either street triple (S or RS) (let's try to leave the 790 duke out of this ). I haven't been on either of these two bikes, but I do own a fz6 and a street triple so I don't have much bias one way or the other. I've spent a fair amount of time on the fz09 first gen as well. I'd say the fz09 makes a better around town or commuter bike. However, the street triple is the bike to be on if you're going to ride aggressively. Doing a track day? Street triple. Riding some mountains? Street triple. Riding to work? Fz09.

you can't really compair Triumph speed triple and mt-09 because of their complitly different nature. I've tried both bikes and i can tell that triumph more of a daily rides, nothing too special, a lot of safety features; where as, mt-09 is very agressive bike that doesnt forgive mistakes. with triumph you will go for a cruse. With MT-09 you go for an adrinaline rush.

Exactly. There's more to riding than power, unless you're just a newb looking for the thrill of whacking the throttle (yawn). As to styling, to each their own, but to me, the Yami looks like a cheap, plastic toy put together by people who found the best colors that clashed ugliest together. The Trumpet's lines are gorgeous, though admittedly, it would be more striking in a brighter color than cave gray. In any event, it looks to be about as great a balance for a sporty street bike as I've ever seen.

Never fail to be amazed by the superficial nonsense of journalese. The Triumph evolved over 12 years, representing the best of sophisticated British design. The MT09 introduced 3 years ago and flawed from inception, described as having more 'character'. 'Thump'. The sound of me falling over....

Why compare the RS when the R would be a more accurate comparison? Price, HP, engine mapping, etc are all set up as a street bike. The RS is set up more for a track bike and needs to be run out hard too get everything out of the engine mapping.

They are so similar and if you spend the price difference upgrading the Yamaha I personally think it is the better choice....one nice thing is the valve inspecttion interval is over DOUBLE the milage compared to the Triumph! Yes the Triumph has a tad bit more hp but lags significantly in TORQUE! I believe the Yamaha will hold up better than a Triumph too I just rode with a dude who bought a 2nd hand MT09 with over 40k MILES on the clock and since buying it the bike now has 96K miles and runs REALLY strong original motor never been apart other than valve cover for adjustment. Yes the Triumph is no doubt a better TRACK motorcycle but really how many buyers are looking to race? IF they put a fairing on the 765 I would pick it over the MT pretty sure Triumph wont. ever... But guess what? Yamaha WILL for 2025 give us the R9! Even right now in europe they sell for 2024 the XSR900GP which is basically an MT09 with a different tank and seat and a retro Cafe FAIRING! 2" longer swingarm of the Tracer 9 but hey I can live with that! If only I could BUY ONE here in the US of A dang it

How is that appreciating the MT-09 makes you a motorcycle ignorant? It comes down to taste and cost-benefit plus, its Yamaha reliability and the CP3 is amazing. The guy that said that is just a plain snob.

The striple RS costs significantly more, they should just do an MT-10 vs Striple RS and then see what happens... Here in the US, the MSRP difference is $3,500 dollars, $500 more and you can have the MT-10. Or you could just Buy a full exhaust, Ohlins suspension, and a custom dyno tune, and still have money left over on the FZ-09

Better fueling, suspension, brakes and finish...pretty easy call for a canyon carver. Even in the city, with stop and go...you don't want jerky throttle response. Plus FZ09 ergo is awkward as hell.

Why not test the base model stipple S, It's still 1500.00 dearer than the MT09 but the MT09 would run rings around the stipple S. The stipple RS is a whopping 5250.00 dearer here in Australia. That's a lot of money put into a MT09 (Ohlins or Penske suspension, braking component uprades, ECU recalibration to name a few) the MT09 would be equal to or better than the RS for the same price point. I get peeved when I see these unfair comparisons........ oh, and I have a MT09 with the above upgrades and loving it

Grant Larven +1 I was massively underwhelmed with the power of the STR 675 when I rode it on the same day as the MT-09, thought I'd check some reviews on the new 765. To compare the MT-09 stock with the STR 765RS is pretty crap. They could've borrowed mine for the day, I've spent about $4500AUD on upgrades (and had so much fun making it mine too btw!) and it's still cheaper than the STR765RS. BTW, the 765RS is 19300 MT-09 12300, 7k difference. It handles amazingly with new suspension, I put a Nitron in mine and racetech gold valves in the front, resprung and adjusted for my weight (professionally). I'm gonna have to test ride the new street triple I think, the things they criticise about the MT-09 are fixed on mine.

Mottorrad tested the S version against the MT 09 as well as the MV 800 Brutale, Suzi GSXS750 and the Kawa Z900. The Z900 trumped them all followed by the Triumph then the Suzi. The MT 09 came next[second from last] with the MV bringing up the rear.

Why are people comparing a speed tripple rs to a non sp mt09...?
@LunchBXcrue
@LunchBXcrue 3 жыл бұрын
This comparison is a little off dont you think? The MT-09 is the base model, the RS is not. If you want to compare the RS to yamahas naked wouldn't it make more sense to compare it to the MT-09 SP model? The regular MT09 is good value when you compare it to the base model striple S. Possibly even the Striple R though the 2020 version has more features or better parts than the MT-09 does. I was gonna get the MT-09 but the 2020 Street Triple R LRH was just such a better value, comes with a quick shifter up and down, adjustable suspension on front and rear, it may have a slightly smaller engine but produces as much hp, brembo brakes and steel brake lines which is fuckin awesome. Hopefully I can pick the bike up tomorrow. Now I just have to sell my other bike. Ooop 1:15 there looks like that back end snapped over! Got a little squirrelly eh.

Test ridden MT09 with Akrapovic and quickshifting that triple motor was fantastic, not a single complain here. But the riding position was horrible for me and the suspension wasnt 100% (but better than older model). Triumph is Sold out here and there are no informations about R version... That said, i was really satisfied with Z900, altough there are no leds, no TC, no quickshifer, horrible dash, but the ergonomy was briliant, engine too and it is availiable and the cheapest one ! Oh, and i would say, all of them sound pretty good even with stock exhaust(intake noise).

I rode the mt09 it felt cheap and rough. The suspension was pathetic and the running gear was of a poor build quality and the throttle response abrupt. The Triumph was in a completely different league I guess you get what you pay for what a shame Yamaha don't do a r spec version of the MT09.

Can't believe what I'm hearing! How can you draw those conclusions when comparing these bikes aesthetically. The triumph street triple looks amazing, its sleek edges and aggressive lines are so stylish. It looks so much more premium and feels that way too. Boring? The MT09 embodies boring: ugly plasticy and jarringly bland. I couldn't disagree with you more about the looks of these two. That Yamaha is cheapy and freaking boring. Street Triple hands down in every respect.
