Bill Browder is convincing the world that Vladimir Putin will stop at nothing to remain in power

Katie talks with Bill Browder, author of "Freezing Order: A True Story of Money Laundering, Murder, and Surviving Vladimir Putin's Wrath", who spent a portion of his career as an investor in Russia before becoming the main thorn in Vladimir Putin's side. Browder and his associate, tax lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, discovered corruption among Russian oligarchs in the early 2000s, and attempted to expose the powerful men and the plot to extort 230 million dollars worth of Russian tax money. Instead, Browder was expelled from Russia and Magnitsky was imprisoned, and eventually killed in detention in 2009. Since then, Browder has waged a war to expose the corrupt officials behind Magnitsky's death. In 2012, he was able to get The Magnitsky Act passed in the U.S., which is able to freeze the assets of targeted individuals, sanction human rights offenders, and ban them from entering the United States.

Magnitsky acts are based on his lies. Browder and associates spirited the money into offshore bank accounts. He is now part of the campaign to escalate the Russia/Ukraine conflict. Ukraine doesn't need a no fly zone enough to justify the risks of war that come with it. What they need is the defensive weaponry that will take Russian jets out of the sky. See that happen enough and Putin will quit watching his aircraft get obliterated. Ukraine has already done a ton of damage to Russian tanks and APC's. Give them the right weapons and they'll do the same to Putin's poorly equipped and poorly led air force.

I am surprised western media always avoided telling more of such stories from Russia (there are plenty) including translating extracts from Russia’s overwhelmingly controlled media - it is important to see how the minds were inducted by that poisonous propaganda for decades. But everybody preferred not to see the growing Reich in Russia. And when Ukrainians pointed at this in 2014 everybody reacted to this as to an exaggeration or emotional speech at best. You just speak about this and see the faces change and people try to behave according of their ideals of tolerance and openness to cultural diversity, but they did it all in expense of accepting the truth and the facts.

Thank you for an excellent interview! We need a very different strategy with foreign policy going forward. The US tends to be naive and lets things get horribly, nightmarishly out of hand. For once and for all, we need a sensible long term set of strategies that we stick to rather than being a country that yo-yos all over the place. I can think of 6,257 reasons that we should tread cautiously. That's how many nukes Russia has. It wouldn't help Ukraine if any of those nukes were launched. Ukraine would be a likely first target. He was also interested in investing in Russia's new privatization economy with the idea that it would improve the country. That doesn't mean he was okay with violence, murder, and the mafia levels of corruption in Putin's Russia. He was fresh out of college when he went to Eastern Europe. The whole Russia experience was a process that culminated with him nearly being murdered and his young attorney being imprisoned and ultimately killed. All because they were exposing Russian corruption. He spent decades trying to get justice for his attorney's murder and expose Putin when he could have just walked away a rich man. He had to deal with a lot of abuse by Western politicians and bad guys too. He's pretty brave, actually. He's not a billionaire, btw, but his net worth is in the high millions.
