In United States politics, a Sister Souljah moment is a politician's public repudiation of an extremist person or group, statement, or position perceived to have some association with the politician or the politician's party.
It has been described as "a key moment when the candidate takes what at least appears to be a bold stand against certain extremes in their party" and as "a calculated denunciation of an extremist position or special interest group." Such an act of repudiation is designed to signal to centrist voters that the politician is not beholden to traditional, and sometimes unpopular, interest groups associated with the party,[citation needed] although such a repudiation runs the risk of alienating some of the politician's allies and the party's base voters. The term is named after the hip hop artist Sister Souljah.
The term originated in the 1992 presidential candidacy of Bill Clinton.[3] In a Washington Post interview published on May 13, 1992, the hip-hop MC, author, and political activist Sister Souljah was quoted as saying (in response to the question regarding black-on-white violence in the 1992 Los Angeles riots):

This was a smart and strategic move. By not denouncing her, he would have lost the independents, libertarians and few Republicans he had on his side. He did not lose any of his black or Democratic support. If he had defended her, it would have been his Mondale moment or Dukakis moment. Mondale was leading in the 1984 polls until he admitted that he was going to raise taxes...that wiped him out. Dukakis was leading in the 1988 polls until his infamous tank gimmick...that washed him out. Clinton was not going to make that same mistake.
@fshoaps
@fshoaps 10 ай бұрын
You seem to be pussyfooting around the fact that Dukakis didn't lose because of the tank photo - he lost become of the racial underbelly of the Atwater campaign. The Willy Horton ad damaged him a lot more, as did his postion against the death penalty - which of course has obvious, obvious racial context.

@@subaiyaA bit of an oversimplification. There was brief moments during the 1984 campaign when Mondale seemed within striking distance. After the first 1984 debate where Reagan was remembered “waltzing down memory lane” getting lost in specific details, dates, and his agenda. This caused enough tumult and fear within the Reagan campaign that they made a point of a less trained, more nimble, instincts based Reagan at the 2nd debate, where famously said that youth and inexperience line. Part of what makes these elections interesting is the underdog candidacies of guys like Mondale, Ford, Trump., fighting against great odds.

Sorry but in what way is saying "Shoot up white people" for fun not prejudice? Is saying "ive never met a good white person" discriminating all white people??? Everybody stop with this out of context crap. Sister Souljah was answering specifically the question about the black people rioting in South Central Los Angeles and especially those that nearly beat Reginald Denny to death. Her answer should have been one where she reminded the reporter that those men beating on Reginald Denny had just heard the not guilty verdict on the LAPD officers who nearly beat Rodney King to death. She should have ended by saying that without the riots in South Central the federal government would never have gotten involved to finally prosecute and convicted of those officers on federal charges the way they did. The answer she gave was totally irresponsible and she was not a teenager she was an adult woman saying it.

LA riots was white cops beating black Rodney King to death obviously that's a social issue that will be discussed and mentioned on the street and the culture people should discuss black on white violence also though they seemed not to mind OJ Simpson killing his pretty white wife because it's not all racial there is gender inequality too. Did black men have the vote before white women in America too I think so. Prejudices come in many forms and there are rival gangs maybe the same race but wear different colors like Democrats and Republicans red and blue there can be political biases also.

Reading these comments, I am struck by the lack of knowledge of the history of racism amongst many of the commenters. I recommend an excellent book "Where Do We Go From Here". It is the last book written by Martin Luther King, Jr. Do any of you actually remember segregation with separate and unequal schools, separate water fountains where the few allowed to black people were often broken, when the majority of white doctors in the South would not treat black patients, when a black person with an advanced degree from an Ivy League school would end up in menial jobs? Do you remember? I am white, but I remember rather clearly. I was eleven the day my white elementary school was integrated. I remember watching the news and seeing George Wallace trying to block the first black students entering the door of the University of Alabama. I remember seeing the brutality on the bridge in Selma, Alabama. I remember a cross burning in my rural county in Georgia. Things are very far from perfect, now, but do not pretend that things are as bad, now, as they have been in the past. We have never addressed nor truly mitigated the lasting effects of slavery, and this is something we must do together because racism has as corrosive effect on white people as black people, but not in the same way. I think reparations of some sort must be made, but I think it needs to be in a form that will have a lasting effect such as higher outcomes in education, work, and personal aspiration. That might be in the form of a monthly payment or focus on poor schools or tuition for education or some combination, but do not sit and think things are as bad as they could be because we have come a long way. We just have a long way to go, yet.

Welfare "Reform" where 70% of recipients were children [Chris Hedges], repeal of glass steagal and Intestate Banking Laws, telecommunications Deregulation, cutting the capital gains tax while increasing taxes on working people [Joseph Stiglitz]. Show me the Left wing policy that this "centrist" embraced. Bill Clinton is a Conservative through and through. Clinton even believes in Supply Side Economics, and Bob WoodWard has pointed out "He was not trying just to help the Bond Market, he [Clinton] claimed. The Bond Market was just the vehicle for helping the middle class".

I'm not a fan of Bill Clinton. But he's on point about Sister Souljah's rhetoric. She segregates blacks and project them as powerless ANIMALS that can do nothing right on their own without "white help." Sister Souljah's rhetoric robs African-Americans the dignity, self-respect, and most importantly their innate intelligence and natural desire for self-betterment... and fostering a sense of dependency and victimhood. So long as blacks follow Sister Souljah's perspective, I'll guarantee that they will never amount to anything other than dooming their own children and posterities to lifelong victimhood.

Bill Clinton had to repudiate her. She needed to frame her answer in a better context. He was going for the center and she was the extreme. It's no different than a Republican who had to repudiate the KKK or neo Nazis. nah she had every right to say what she said, in the way that she said it. white people have never listened or done anything about the plight of black americans. if you're being violently attacked do you politely ask your attacker to please stop? or do you scream your head of until someone hears you?
