You see those faces he makes? Those are the faces of those who know they have the time into the craft or skill that they have put their long hours into. Those of you who know what i'm talking about. Pure focus, pure mindset.

Its a flow state of creativity. Many musicians experience this, and thats one of the most beautiful thing about being an artist. That flow state, its transcendental.

Haven't seen this video. Bill is, along with Trane, the most influential musician of the past half century. Every note, every voicing has a purpose. The left hand is as prominent as the right. The man was built to play a piano, powerful shoulders and thick fingers. He died still topping himself, inventing an "anticipatory rhythm" that has never been copied. (it nearly gave Konitz a heart attack.)
@luissalazarweil97755 жыл бұрын
I agree, but Charlie Parker should definitely be on that list as well

Funny comment, but true. You might be surprised to know this bank manager looking musical genius was a hard core junkie til his death (like many jazz men of the day). I just read "The Big Love" which was basically a diary written by Evans' young lover up to the time of his death. The man was no doubt a genius.
@clarabroderick2135 Жыл бұрын
I wish it were not true. I had the immense pleasure of being next to him while he played. The sweetest person. I wanted to think he was pure and without crutch of drugs. His passion was strong. He was tender and shy. The most pure individualist. Another genius who gave all he felt.

What a sea change for Nils-Orsted (from Oscar) and for Dawson (from Brubeck). Bill plays with a more minimalist yet rhythmically "more forward" pulse, phrasing melodies "ahead" of the chords. Bass and drums must either hold while he lunges forward or, as with his last trio, follow him all the way. Not easy.

2:49〜 I find this drummer some kind of "workerism". For example, if he cooks and cuts steaks, fries pasta in a frying-pan, operates heavy equipment at the construction site, or handles fish in sushi-bar, he does them in the same way and wouldn't make any difference. Do you understand what I mean?
