+Peco It's pretty funny how our national debt pretty much lines up with how much was used to bailout the banks. This story was pretty much not reported anywhere, but it's an official Fed Audit. Surprisingly, it was called for by Bernie Sanders. www.sott.net/article/250592-Audit-of-the-Federal-Reserve-Reveals-16-Trillion-in-Secret-Bailouts You can find the full Audit here: www.scribd.com/doc/60553686/GAO-Fed-Investigation#outer_page_144 Basically we were bailing out the banks leading up to the 2008 Crash to the tune of 16 Trillion Dollars. If you factor in interest charges, it's basically the entire national debt. They totally knew it was coming. I don't hear a single republican or democrat mention that when they discuss the national debt.
@curiosity55
@curiosity55 8 жыл бұрын
Sandeep Luthra Firstly, the 2008 crash and bailout to the banks were done by Bush for 1 year (07 - end of 08) and for 2 years by Obama, seems both sides of the political system are fine with it, not strictly the republican leadership. Secondly, apparently the 16 trillion has already been paid back by the banks www.metabunk.org/debunked-the-fed-gave-away-16-trillion-and-2-5-trillion-to-citigroup.t745/ Thirdly, if it had not been paid back then the debt would currently be at 26 trillion, not 19 trillion and it would be getting constant media coverage. "Basically we were bailing out the banks leading up to the 2008 Crash" -you Alrighty, the 16 trillion dollar loans that have been paid off occurred December 2007 and June 2010, not years and years before the crisis. And as far as the 08 crash is concerned this article explains it pretty well but a quick summary goes as follows Clintons: You banks are racist Banks: No we aint Clintons: Give more loans to minorities Banks: Fuck, since its now a law guess we have to Banks: Fuck, these minorities can't repay their loans Alan Greenspan: Take it easy banks, we'll keep giving you money to recoup your losses 2008: Boom goes the dynamite spectator.org/articles/42211/true-origins-financial-crisis

Bill actually makes sense, Trump and Sanders are both populists candidates. Aside from disliking the person himself (O'Reilly), I do not see why people would down vote what he was saying, as a matter of fact it proves his assertions. People are voting based on "feelings", not actual pragmatism or actual policy consideration, but it has always been that way though. It is funny that the only time we vote for anyone based on policy considerations is probably the president of the student body in varsity.

+Agent Smidt +MRostendway is correct... while they are both running populist campaigns the two of them could not be further apart in how they intend to achieve the greater America each envisions. Beyond that, I personally found Bill argument to be a bit disingenuous, he asserts that both candidates are proposing plans that have no basis in reality (to which their supporters care little to none about), and even gives a justification why Donald Trump's plan is as such.. but simply leaves the assertion that Bernie's plan cannot be done without giving any reason for it. If you personally believe that making public colleges tuition free is unfeasible, can you explain why it is that you feel this is the case? Especially since we already do it with K-12, why is it so outlandish to say we add four more years to the top for a better educated citizenry?

Also, Bernie IS ACTUALLY a successful politician. Trump is a bored and spoiled, reality tv, "business man" brat. That is a pretty massive plot point discrepancy that always gets missed in the Sanders/Trump/same/same comparison... Don't get me wrong, I think they are a breath of pure poetry. Epic of Good vs Evil.Yes, of course. But I feel like that is a vital and irreconcilable difference that can not be glossed over. Also, also, seriously, fuck Bill O'Reilly. Yikes.

+Agent Smidt by just viewing said politicians as avatars of good and evil you are pretty much confirming Bill's statement. It's a pure visceral reaction. and regarding why it is not possible to achieve free college in the US, he explained from a fiscal point of view. Now, how precise or not is the estimation, I dare not say.

See this i dont get, you say "well there are only 5.6 million people in denmark, and we're over 300 million, so it's not doable." But why is that? We only have 5.6 million people to educate here in denmark, but at the same time we also only have 5.6 million people paying taxes. If you had over 300 million people paying taxes, to pay for education for 300 million people, basic math tells me, that you get the same end result. Maybe there is some piece of math i am missing here, but i really dont get that one argument.
@scottyalto

Great question. The US has tax brackets keep taxes low for the majority. 80% of the taxes are paid by the top 2-4%. The Dems say tax the rich more. But that would not cover the Sandersesque education and medical expenses. However, your suggestion would be plausible if everyone paid more and we had no debt.

@RudyBleeker
@RudyBleeker 8 жыл бұрын
+scottyalto actually those top 2-4% are the ones who are currently getting huge tax breaks in the US. They hardly pay any taxes as a percentage of their income. That's how currently the poor are kept poor and the rich rich.
@scottyalto
@scottyalto 8 жыл бұрын
+Rudy Bleeker I know that is a common theme. It is technically true. 10% off of $100 is not as "huge" as 10% off of 1million. But it doesn't change the fact of my original statement. 80% of taxes are paid by top 3%. The OP asked "why can't we scale up what the other countries do to provide socialized medicine?" the answer is we can't due to our debt and tax system leaning too heavily on a small portion of our citizenry. I'm not trying to burst any 99%er bubbles or make a political statement. Just giving an honest answer.
@Ragis
@Ragis 8 жыл бұрын
+Marcus Ryser Google subsidiarity. For big, complex countries, it's difficult to apply general policies for two reasons: Realities are vastly different and there may be areas in the US where it would make sense to have free, government run healthcare, and others where it wouldn't. The other reason is that with large government institutions that provide services, economies of scale don't work. They simply don't have the efficiency incentives and pressing competition that private institutions face. In big countries with free, government run healthcare (UK), the cost is enormous, and quality is only OK. I would be better that cities or regions create their own healthcare systems if that's what the electorate wants, fine-tuned for their particular needs.

Having a smaller population and a smaller economy just means that it's HARDER to pay for everybody's higher education. There are fewer students, yes, but there are also fewer possible payers and a smaller GDP. US GDP per capita is the 10th highest in the world, Denmark's is 21st. (Nominal GDP in the US is the highest one in the world period while Denmark's is 34th.) So which country should have an easier time paying for education? It's all about priorities. The US can easily afford it if it wants to. In fact the US might not be able to afford NOT to have free education because having that many young people in crippling debt definitely hurts the economy and in the long run might bring it down completely. _You need people who can afford to spend their money for the economy to work_. I wish Colbert would have challenged O'Reilly more in this interview. Saying Sanders and Trump are the same is absolute nonsense, whether you agree with either of them or not.

They aren't the same. Not even close. In a lot of ways they are polar opposites. But here is the common denominator. Here is why people are gravitating toward both candidates: Neither one is owned by corporations or billionaires. When you know lots of ignorant American voters don't think too deeply about the actual policies; but what they do tend to do is oversimplify things into false dichotomies (socialist/capitalist, left vs right, republican or democrat, good or bad). @mori1bund
@mori1bund 8 жыл бұрын
+dwildhockey24b Ahem no. Here in Europe Sanders would be considered mainstream and not extreme. While Trump doesn't explain how he will realize his ideas like deporting that many immigrants or building a wall that Mexico will pay for, Sanders has well explained how his ideas will work. In fact they work here well in Europe. And O'Reilly's "Danmark has 16 people comment" is another pile of bullshit, since Germany, that has the same social standards, has 80 Million people. As a European it makes me laugh, when I hear Americans talk about being the "greatest country on earth" while communities like Flint poison their own people, because they even can't afford basic human needs like water, because Americans think "taxes are evil!"
@dwildhockey24b
@dwildhockey24b 8 жыл бұрын
While that's the case in Europe, it's not the case in America. Sanders' views are far from the norm over here. Though I find Sanders the most genuine of all the candidates, I have to agree with Bill that what he wants to accomplish is impossible. When I say "impossible" I don't mean that it *can't* literally be done, because it obviously can, but rather that it's impossible simply because it *won't* be done. In order for Bernie to accomplish the things he'd like to accomplish, he'd have to get by congress. Congress isn't going to fold hundreds of years of traditional American practices in the blink of an eye. Maybe America will become more socialistic down the road, but in today's day in age there's just no way. If Bernie were to get elected, I fear the United States would be in a four year standoff, accomplishing close to nothing.
@mori1bund
@mori1bund 8 жыл бұрын
+dwildhockey24b They said the same about universal healthcare. Every journey starts with a first step. And as I understand it, the US has some serious troubles with infrastructure, education and social issues, which have to be addressed NOW. As a European I often hear, the American spirit is not "it can't be done!" - it's "let's do it!" And please don't call it "socialistic". One common issue I see among US posters that they don't differ between communist, socialist and social democratic, which makes it easy to disparage Bernie's ideas. Bernie is social democratic.
@dwildhockey24b
@dwildhockey24b 8 жыл бұрын
+mori1bund The social issues in the US are being addressed now. The problem in the US is that changes here take time and lots of it. A president in the US has four years to accomplish what they want. That's it. And if they're well-liked they can be elected for an additional four. If Bernie were to get elected he'd be fighting with congress for four years and accomplish close to nothing. Presidents that accomplish nothing are, obviously, at a disadvantage for re-election. This is ultimately why Bernie being elected makes me nervous. If he were elected, the only thing I can realistically predict is higher taxes and an increased national deficit. Then *poof* his four years are up and the country votes a far right conservative into office in 2020 because of the disappointment in Bernie's tenure. It's important to think big picture here. I hope for a more progressive America too, but the reality of the situation is that half of our population is stuck on old-school conservative values. Which ultimately hinders any kind of progress. ESPECIALLY when that progress requires as much change as Bernie hopes for. Personally, I'd rather have a moderate Democrat in the White House than Bernie because at least a Moderate Democrat would appeal to middle-of-the-road voters and get far more done than someone with views as extreme as Bernie's. For the record, I'm all for Bernie's ideals. I just want my country to move forward. And with Bernie in office, I feel like things could come to a scary halt.

After the break, the conversation goes something like this: Colbert: "People tend to misunderstand Reagan, they often forget he raised taxes.." O'Reilly: "Yes, he was a masterful politician; he knew how to get things done" Colbert: "He ran big deficits too.." O'Reilly: "Of course, but he did it to defeat the Soviet Union, which was accomplished" Colbert: "So that's what I don't get, it's okay to rack up a big deficit in the pursuit of militaristic goals, but the same can't be done for a free college education and better social programs?" [Huge Applause] O'Reilly: "That's a common liberal position... You're having a stroke again" [mocking laughter]

It was just a poor attempt at humor. Before I start let me say that I'm not backing any candidate at this time, and I will vote for the best person (or least terrible) based on if I believe they can do the job regardless of political affiliation. I agree with Bill that Trump and Sanders are using the anger in the country (in different ways) to motivate people to go out and vote for them. Both candidates are also saying things that won't happen. If the wall happens it will be the middle class paying the $22 billion to build it and not Mexico. Sanders is in the top 1% and so is the rest of the senate. Why would they vote to increase their taxes? Free college is a cute idea, but it doesn't address the real problem. College tuition has been allowed to grow without any regulation, and student loan interest rates are obscenely high. The economy is doing poorly because the younger generation is being screwed over by the older generation that gave them the obscene loans. The plan was you do well in college, get a degree, find a good paying job, and continue living the American dream. Right now that can't happen easily for a lot of the youth. College tuition needs to come down before the bubble bursts like the housing market did, and there needs to be a cap on the interest rate along with guidelines for how much it can be raised within a year. It's hilarious to me when politicians bring out graduates with $200/moth in payments. You can work in fast food and pay that off. I pay more than some people's home mortgages every month. Free community college will also devalue everyone's degrees. Right now a bachelors will get you a decent job, but what good will that degree be when everyone is at that level? Then we will have to get a masters if not a doctorate just to get an entry level position. That is more time and money spent to get ahead in life.

If you are not familiarized with hyperbole, that's what he used. The ammount of people living in the United States is a critical factor as to why a education system free for everyone can be imedeately implemented. The initial cost would be huge, which is actually not very good for a country in serious debt. The people that receive the free education will cost to the state, and that cost will have been in vain if they grow not to be producers for the economy. This system would need to be, from the start, either extremely efficient or extremely small (proportionally), none of which will be implemented with Bernie's policies. Add that to the costs that he will generate to put forward his free healthcare plan, and it becomes nearly impossible to be put forward by a country that finds itself as the one with the biggest external debt in the world. So then you take another approach: Take it from the 1%, cause they have all that money with them that could be used to help the country! Not getting into the story of how they got the money (which is important), these business owners (thet represent a large part f the 1%) will more likely find a way to avoid these taxes. You complain of unemployment and low wages, but that is the consequence of taxing the rich. They outsource their businiess to where production is cheaper (in virtue of the lower taxes of the other countries). As unemployment rises in the US, they can get away more easily with paying low wages, as the search for job is bigger (supply and demand). As the 1% is not paying the taxes they are "supposed to", where does the money come from? Everyone else. The people that can't pay for education and healthcare will have to pay for it through taxes. As they can't pay for it, the system will prove itself unsustainable, and will need to be repealed. And that's why the population size matters.

I am a full time student with two jobs, I have zero debt, it seems to me you people are just lazy, you want someone else to pay for YOUR education. life isn't fair! Go earn it yourself or live a life of obscurity. We are trillions of dollars in debt already, quit asking for a hand out and start helping. "Ask not what your country can so for you, ask what you can do for your country."

Bro i'm German and i lived in the united states for over a year. you clearly dont know nothing about how Germans live. i dont exactly know what you consider as 'luxury' but Germany has a lot of lifestyle advantages compared to the US. theres nothing an american can have that a German cant have except for a gun without a license maybe. And Europe is 450 Milions, so its bigger than 350 people u have in USA

Any O'Reilly - Colbert interaction is always worth watching, this was no different. Got a good laugh out of it. I like how they have such different opinions and stances, but they are not afraid to appear on each other's shows, though they know the audience will always lean to the side of the host of the show. Professional respect, I'd say.

Bill is actually absolutely right. It doesn't matter who wins, nothing will change. Not because change isn't needed, but because of how the change would have to happen. Having said that, Bernie and Trump are absolutely not the same person.

Title is kinda misleading, after Bill said so many obvious non-literal statements (only 17 people in New Hampshire) he's not saying they are literally the same but that they have the same sort of appeal, but in different ways to right and left. Which I don't think anyone even wants to refute, both of those candidates and their supporters make a big fucking deal about how they are NOT part of the status-quo and they are tapping into real anger and frustration. Very different areas and different ideology but obviously not the case that all the bad things said about Trump therefore apply to Bernie. And most countries around the world do NOT have free higher education. What is very common (but still NOT universal) in rich countries is to have elaborate systems of bursaries for certain careers that government positions or professions want, or student loans schemes. WHICH AMERICA ALREADY HAS! It's just usually decided on a state level as that's obviously a state matter. And in US States just as in other countries there are negative consequences with this with cheap loans for education has much the same effect as cheap loans for housing, it leads to inflation. But countries that just say they will 100% cover the bill for ANY course, even worthless degrees like gender dance theory, almost none can do it. The few that can have unique circumstances like being incredibly rich from oil wealth relative to a small population.

India provides a nearly free college education to its people. Those government colleges are the best ones in the country. In fact if you study in a private college, people just assume you weren't a good enough student to get into a public college and had to buy your way in. Maybe Mr. O'Reilly would like to explain how a much poorer country like India manages to pull that off while somehow the richest country on the planet cannot?
