Glad to see that viewpoint here! It's really grown on me over the past week as a piece of music, and it's also by far the most important song to (maybe?) penetrate into the cultural mainstream this year. I'm honestly simultaneously surprised and not surprised that the genocide in Gaza has attracted so little protest music in the mainstream - given the extraordinary political repression on those speaking out for Palestine right now, it makes sense that the music industry at large might be a bit cagey about addressing the controversy and/or itself partake in that repression, but it also seems like such a clear Vietnam War moment, and there are clearly artists who have spoken about this issue outside of their music (including Drake of all people).
@piran18078 ай бұрын
@@beatoriche7301 Agreed. It's obviously a very sensitive topic for many people and the political backlash could be a factor too, but I think it's an important issue to address nonetheless and I admire Macklemore for having the courage to speak out about it, not just about what's happening in Gaza but also the horrific ways the police have been acting towards peaceful protestors in the US.
@beatoriche73018 ай бұрын
@@piran1807 I do too - I've never been the biggest Macklemore fan, but something no one can take away from him is his willingness to learn about serious issues and quite openly discuss his personal journey in his music, going back at least as far as The Heist (and possibly before that - I haven't listened to any of his earlier output). You can think that his writing on these topics is occasionally a bit clumsy or preachy, but in the end, I think you gotta respect his willingness to delve into important subjects very few mainstream artists are willing to touch on, and Hind's Hall certainly made my respect for the man skyrocket. Fills me with Seattle-area local pride that he was the first mainstream artist to do something like this, haha - and I certainly hope he won't be the last and that some more artists will respond to his call. I hope we've moved past small stuff like signing ceasefire letters or wearing pins at an award show (stuff that, let's be honest, only those of us who are super plugged in to pop culture) and that opposition to Israel's crimes in Gaza will soon become much more visible within the culture at large. In some ways, I understand the silence of many celebrities (including prominent Palestinians like DJ Khaled), which probably has its roots in cynical business calculations (as in, will I get Dixie Chicked if I do this? Will it alienate some part of my audience? Which, in fairness, are not unreasonable fears to have.) and a degree of humility (as in, why would people want to hear from me of all people? People usually hate it when celebrities insert themselves into these kinds of topics.), but I also believe that what Israel is doing in Gaza is probably the greatest moral atrocity of the past half-century or so and that raising awareness of what the US is currently funding is incredibly important. For better or for worse, mainstream artists have a mass appeal that will potentially get many more people to hear them out in comparison to, say, political talking heads. If dissent on this enters the cultural mainstream, the pressure on politicians will increase dramatically, and it becomes a lot more difficult to justify those authoritarian crackdowns you alluded to.

The only song that released last Friday that matters is Wow! Wow! Wow! by Royal Republic. Getting a new song from them and a new Planet of the Apes movie on the same day was nice. The only reason why I'm not making a comment where I trick you into thinking I'm gonna talk the big song, only to talk about something else is because I already did last week. Ignoring how a song made by band who never charts that I like a lot released on the same day as a song with a discourse man, my thoughts on Wow! Wow! Wow! are this. Hmm, I did not expect a fifth single pre-album release. I didn't even expect a fourth one. Usually, you're lucky to get a fourth one after the album release with most artists. I should add that with each of the new Royal Republic songs, I noticed I like each one somewhat less than the last, but all of them except My House, which clicked with me right away, grew on me. Though I did like Ain't Got Time more first listen than I did with LoveCop and Lazerlove. While Wow! Wow! Wow! did continue that tradition, I still like it. It's silly, but in an enjoyable way. The transition between the third verse and the sax solo is awesome. And it further confirmed to me that Lazerlove is a purposely cheesy song. The new Royal Republic album comes out the week before my birthday. Hell yeah! Between this and the Foo Fighters last year, I hope the tradition of artists I like enough to listen to a full album from them releasing one during my birth month continues.

This convinced me to listen to Not Like Us. I've listened to two number one songs from this year now. Three if you count Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree.

BOTW: Not Like Us - Meet the Grahams was close, but it was just way too disturbing for the top spot. (I had to listen to Miles on It to get my good feelings back. Yes, it's a guilty pleasure, shut up, don't ask.) WOTW (Tie): Whatsapp (Wassam) and Si No Quieres No - For the former, Gunna sucks, Gunna has always sucked, and he will continue to suck. Go away Gunna. As for the latter, the 2 artists lack any chemistry and it's just a mess. I'm actually really excited for the Post Malone and Morgan Wallen collab to hit #1 next week (Post Malone is always good), and oh boy, get your weapons everybody, Gunna is GUNNA release hell upon us. Offset got to show his chops with him, but we'll see how Leon Bridges, Roddy Ricch, and Normani do with him. Oh, and I don't care if people complain about my choices, I just love pissing people off.

HM (Tie): Meet the Grahams and Take Her Home - The former was close, if it wasn't for being WAY too dark for my standards. Still good though. For the latter, Kenny Chesney has always been good to me, so I'm glad he has another charting song, but I'm still shocked that he can still make the Hot 100, especially as he's in his late 50s. DM: Family Matters - Yeah, Drake should be lucky that The Heart Part 6 didn't made it, otherwise he would've gotten a bottom spot. This is just boring.

That new Kane Brown and Marshmello song is just funny to me. Obviously trying to be One Thing Right part 2. 😆😆😆 Also go check out Mello Death (the collab project between Marshmello and dubstep artist Svdden Death) which obviously won't chart because it's not pop friendly.

Let's wait and see if the streaming holds stability to chart next week and compete with Gunna's album-bomb potential.

He quit for a while to focus more on acting and is now surprise dropping albums every couple of years. He hasn't charted since he quit. His last proper release was the single Feel Like Summer.

Well at least Miles On It isn’t anywhere near One Thing Right horrendous but that doesn’t excuse it from being garbage

And stealing a melody line from "Die Young" isn't the excuse for sounding so overcompressed with worse percussion.
