I need to replace the shocks on an 05 Ford Excursion 6.0l powerjoke. I've been going back and forth between rancho/fox/bilstein as I'm not sure which will be the best. Suspension is a lifted 6 inches over stock with leaf springs on all 4 corner. Tires are 325 60r20. I'm looking for the best ride quality over all. I do know and understand that no matter what leaf spring will never be as forgiving as coil springs.

It'll be hard to get comfortable because 1. it's a full leaf pack system 2. you have a 6" lift. The best we can try to do is get you something valve softer? but note if we aim for more comfort it may provide less functionality if you're using this truck for anything else outside. It's harder to get the bet of both worlds.

I have a 2019 Silverado duramax 3500 ( front level from dealer) with air bags to level when towing 5th wheel travel trailer. Considering Fox 2.0, Bilstein 5100 and my son told me about Rancho. Your recommendation for street / hwy use (don't particularly love the stiff ride). Thanks

If you're towing, we do suggest Bilstein 5100 but they do ride a bit firmer than stock. But that's intended because it's used for that specific towing usage.

Hi guys. Thanks for the video. I really would appreciate your advice. I own a Chevy Tahoe PPV 2015 (bought it as a second hand vehicle) which as you may know has a really stiff suspension. It just comes out of the factory like that 🙈 So I am using it as a civilian. What would be the best solution (front & rear) for me as my old man is not happy while a passenger with the confort. I would like it to be as comfortable as possible...smooth ride ideally. What can I get to replace the stiff ones it already has ? Thank you 🙏🏻

The PPV models run a little stiffer and lower spring set up all around compared to the regular Tahoes so they would definitely be firm, especially without all the gear and accessories the cops load into them. If it were me and comfort was the name of the game, I would run a set of Fox 2.0s and grab either a stock or lifted spring designed for a standard Tahoe in the rear.

Just installed a pair of Rancho 5000x on the rears of my 2019 f250, note I am still running OEM shocks for my fronts. But going through the comment section I can see why people say it floats and feels like “not having a shock” it’s definitely way softer and I definitely think my bump stops are gonna be eating a lot 😂, now build quality wise out the box it makes sense for the $70-90 price point. Now if you’re just saving up for some 2.0’s or the carli kit, Id best aim at the 4600’s from billsteins. Haven’t taken them off to the fire roads yet but I know it’s already twice as softer 😂 and I feel the body roll in the rear when taking a curve. But in all 1-10 give them a solid 6.5 definitely not disappointed they’re $100 shocks what more is there to expect ??

Sounds about right. Bilstein 5100 have a 46 mm piston and Fox 2.0 have a 48 mm piston.

I’ve been having the toughest time searching for, “the perfect shock” I understand it’s how I drive and where I drive. I live it in Vegas and there’s not much off roading I do. There is a lot of bumps on the road and I wish to get a shock to best absorb the bumps. Basically I want to make the truck ride like a cloud. It’s a truck so it won’t ever ride like a cloud but I’m looking for something that can get me close to it. It’s a 2001 Tacoma 2WD PreRunner.

the shocks that will get you closest, and can mostly achieve what you're after, are a set of King Shocks, approximately $3k for the set. If that's not in your budget, Fox 2.0 can get you close for about $1200/set. If that's not in your budget, then maybe KYB gas

Shocks definitely are not going to reduce sag, but I would definitely recommend taking a look at either Bilstein 5100s or Eibach Pro Truck Sport shocks. The Eibachs will be more comfortable particularly on those fire service roads, and the Bilsteins will be better under a load, but a touch firmer.

I have a 2006 Jeep LJ with FOX98450311 which is a 2.0 Fox Adventure Series out of the box. Can these shocks be revalved? I am looking for a smoother ride for daily driving surface streets and interstate. If not what would you recommend? Jeep is lightweight...just 275/70/17 ATs. No extra weight in it.

Adventure Series cannot be re-valved, the performance can be and all the 2.5 and 3.0s. Look at Bilstein 4600, those are good OEM replacement for daily driving.

If you're keep this completely stock, we suggest Bilstein 4600 as a starting point. If you use your Tacoma to tow or haul, then look at the Bilstein 5100. If you ever plan to take this off-roading, Eibach Pro Truck or Fox 2.0

Hi Sean, I have a 2018 2500 HD Duramax that I installed a Suspension MAXX leveling kit that increased the height 2.5 inches. I tow an 1800 lb 5th wheel travel trailer with Firestone Ride-Rite air bags under the rear. I’m totally satisfied with the ride with or without the trailer. Recently I took an 8500 mile round trip across the country on some pretty bad roads and I’m thinking the stock shocks need to be replaced. My question is, should I replace the front shocks with something like a Rancho coil over to help the leveling kit or would a stock replacement be adequate? Your 2500 does not use a coilover set up unless you have purchased a coilover conversion kit. We suggest looking at Bilstein 5100 for your towing needs.

Would using a shock boot, like the bilstein 5100’s, increase the life of the fox shocks? By keeping the piston rod clean?

To some degree yes, but just like your engine, transmission, differential oil and etc., the fluids inside the shocks will go bad overtime. In all performance focused shocks, they're all pretty much rebuildable so you can maintain the longevity of the overall components as long as possible.

Those stock Ranchos are comically underdamped, and can not control the rate of the rear springs at all which is likely where the hop you are feeling is coming from. I would definitely be looking at the Bilstein 5100s for sure. They have Trail Boss/AT4 spec shocks and struts that should greatly improve ride and handling with or without a load.

Hope you can help or someone with real time using thr shocks. I have newer chevrolet 2500 gas with factory ranchos. Im wanting softer ride no so stiff and feel every bump. Definitely feel every little thing. I know its a hd truck and i love it but seats in these new trucks are so hard and i have been recently diagnosed with back problems. Fox 2.0s will definitely be the most comfortable option and are a great choice particularly if you are not towing or hauling anything serious. At $700 a set they can be a little pricey, and with your use will likely need to be serviced every ~30k miles, so if you would like something a little longer lasting a Eibach Pro Truck Sport package would be a great choice. The Bilsteins work great as well, but if you are not towing or hauling anything heavy, you can afford to go with something a little softer. With that said, it will always be a 3/4 truck, so as long as it has stock leaf springs and still has torsion bars in the front, it will almost always be pretty stiff.

Legion 16 is on the right track. Bilstein 4600 are are OEM replacement if you're looking for just a simple replacement for your factory shocks. Bilstein 5100 are an entry leveling noted for towing and hauling. In some cases, depending on the vehicle, the 5100 only work with lifted vehicles.

So we don't have anything that would work to replacement or bypass the magnetic ride. You would need to at least source a delete or bypass kit. Then you can run any suspension from there.

Any aftermarket shocks will help with stability. Some help more than others. There are two brands in this video, Rancho RS5000X and Rancho RS9000XL are softer than Fox. Bilstein 5100 and Eibach Pro Truck are around the Fox 2.0 in terms of comfort and usage.

is the rear too firm on your setup? no brand has aftermarket shocks available for the new Tundras just yet. If its too firm, you can load it up with a couple hundred pounds and it'll be much better. Otherwise wait for 2.0s from Fox to soften it up.

@@ShockSurplus more of a bumpiness feeling, indicative of too much gas pressure. The secondary resonate vibration of the bed, seems to be the frame flexing, over railroad tracks nonetheless. I tried 150lbs of bagged sand better but the rear moved around a bit, it seems the new rear coil springs might be progressive. Rear shocks look very similar to 2019 shocks. i may try a few shccks in the back as they are easy to swap out. Outside of the suspension in this truck, the drivetrain is pretty amazing from my 5.7. Ahh. the fun of being an early adopter!

This is a sales pitch and not an apples to apples comparison. As the host suggests, "Don't let forums or other people that you may not know drive your decision on equipment for your vehicle." You tube is one of them. I say absolutely DO allow forums and other people to sway your decision since those forums are largely opinions, not driven by sales. I tuned in to watch a comparison, but it turned into a bash session for Rancho. Nobody watching these videos is going to have their shocks sent off to be rebuilt while their vehicles sit on jack stands for two weeks. Most people watching these videos will just purchase new shocks and sell the old ones on marketplace. I suppose you got through to some suckers out there.

I am not sure where you are getting that this is a sales pitch, and from the sounds of things, you definitely are not familiar with our channel, but we base all of what we say on real-world testing, most of which you can see in many of the videos we have posted. Where the forums can misdirect you is most people on forums have only had experience with one or maybe two aftermarket suspension systems on their application, where we test everything we can get our hands on. We have spent many hours on forums debunking much of the claims, and providing actual information and data. That is not to say there is not good info from your local know-it-all all or forum lurker, but you will be hard-pressed to find anybody with more test miles on these kinds of setups. We are in a unique position where we can actually test EVERYTHING on our own vehicles, which is not something that can be said by the majority of people, including forums and certainly others dealers. We have even tested and reviewed a number of products we do not even sell or list on our site. The reality is we do not care if you buy from us or not; we are here to educate people on what might be best for their application. In fact, if we were trying to sell you something to make money off our viewers rather than educate, we would be pushing you into Rancho RS9000s. Although the price is lower, the margins are usually much higher and are almost always in stock. With that said, they account for the vast majority of our warranty and defective product claims as well as customers who are just plain unhappy with the ride and performance of their vehicles. If anything, the only pitching we are doing is to convince our customers to buy something other than a Rancho that will guarantee they will not call us back angry about their shocks failing or not performing as they should less than six months after the purchase. Which even if you consider that a sales pitch, that is still educating people to make a purchase they will be happier with. Furthermore, it does not do us any favors to push a false agenda to sell you something that is not right for you or give you the wrong information, as at the end of the day, that is just more work and money lost in returns for us. Even with all the data proving they were not worth our time, we still have tested Ranchos on several of our own vehicles, so we could speak from a place of experience. In all honesty, you may see it as a hard bashing on Rancho, but we were actually going easy on them in this video. If nobody wanted to rebuild their shocks for half the price of replacing them, we would not be booked until the end of the year for same-day services, where you can drive your truck into our shop in the morning and drive out with their shocks fully rebuilt. Nor would there be hundreds of companies whose only business is servicing shocks. Even if you are going to send your shocks to us, most of our customers would prefer to have their truck on blocks for a week rather than pay hundreds if not thousands of dollars more on a replacement.

You are one of those mechanics that recommends bf goodrich tires over Michelins or firestones.

I got a jeep tj with a 3.5 inch JKS JSpec lift. And it kinda rides like shit on regular road, it bounces like Im on wash boards, and every little bottle is very harsh and jarring. The JKS Shocks suck, what can I do, what shocks will work for me? I want smooth on road hanlding more than extreme off roading. Jeep tj is otherwise stock, and very lightly loaded, will never tow.

Unfortunately that is somewhat the case with most "House Brand" shocks. They just want to give you a shock that works well enough so that it is safe to drive and really nothing more. If onroad handling is a big concern then I would definitely lean towards a Bilstein 5100

I have the rancho 9000xl on my ram 3500 2wd and they are worse then stock, even cranked all the way up they dont have near enough compression or rebound, the front end of my truck floats and bounces really bad like a boat.

why rebuild shocks if the rebuild is almost as much as a new one? And if the "rebuilder" messes up that will be a waste then.

We definitely have gotten a lot of shocks in for service that other "rebuilders" have made a mess of. It ends up almost being cheaper to replace the shock, but in most cases, if you stay on top of service so there are no serious repairs that need to be made, we only charge $100 for a rebuild on a basic Fox 2.0 IFP. Those go for $199.95 new, so it still is cheaper to service than replace; with that said, once we have to start replacing things like the shafts, rod ends, pistons, or bodies, it starts to make more sense to replace. Really the 2.0 IFP smooth body shocks are the only line of shocks at Fox where rebuilding or replacing is worth questioning since they are the cheapest thing Fox makes. Every other line is more expensive to buy outright and much more worthwhile rebuilding. It also is really nice when you have a somewhat unique application where shocks might be hard to come by in the future. If you can get a good set of Fox, King, Icon, or other serviceable shocks, it does not matter if manufacturers discontinue them as you can continue to have them rebuilt.

Aftermarket shocks can be good but don't last as long as Factory shocks one of their downfalls is not having a stiff sleeve to protect the rod they had those generic ugly boots that are put on with a zip tie

Although certainly the case with many aftermarket shocks, we do find that brands like Eibach and Bilstein make parts that will at the very least last as long as stock if not longer. With that said the reason the other options do not last as long has little to do with the boot design, in fact most higher end dampers do not even use a boot in the first place. Regardless of whether they use a plastic shield, rubber accordion boot, or no boot at all, a shocks longevity is all about the seals, oil, and internal damper design.
