Bilstein offers proven performance and reliability. Which one is best will depend on your ride style and how much you demand of your truck. The Bilstein 5100 is the baseline standard here, with the Bilstein 5160 providing a reservoir version, and finally the 6112 is the beefier coilover option.

I found this to be the most detailed, informative and practical explanation of the Bilstein line on KZbin. While others certainly cover the basics about the shock characteristics, they don’t drill down to a Consumer-level to determine which one is best for you. This one does. Others invite you to contact them to discuss options. While we appreciate that, the reason we watch videos in the first place is to determine which one is best for our driving style. Regardless, this video was very helpful to me. 5100’s all the way around for me.

I don’t off road my truck often but I want to be able to tackle fire roads and other mild terrain at higher speeds. I like to explore the blue ridge mountains and there’s easy simple trails everywhere and can easily lose track of time and see yourself driving an hour or more back to the highway. Being able to hit pot holes and ruts at 15-20+ mph and not get beat to death is what I want.

For a towing application (Tundra), is it OK to use 4600's on the front and 5100 reservoir on the back? Or will 4600's all around work fine for towing? The stock shocks are on there now, never been happy with the ride and towing is bonkers with those.
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 8 ай бұрын
Really the 5160 is not going to be noticeably better under a load than the 4600s, and if you are just daily driving and towing, you will never get your shocks hot enough to need a reservoir shock in the rear. I would save the money and go 4600s all around for sure.

Great break down on these; I run the 6121/5160 on my Tacoma. My questions is as I add load (bumpers, topper, equip, ppl) what is the best application? 4WP folks are guiding me towards airbags with compressor. I am not seeing a lot of those setups. I feel I am getting misguided. I see ppl using beefed leaf springs. Not which way to go?
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 9 ай бұрын
For constant load like that we think a better option would be a full set of leaf springs like Icon RXTs. You do not want to rely on load leveling solutions like air bags all the time. If you are running a heavy front bumper as well it might be a good idea to step up to a 650 or 700 lb per inch spring.

I am having difficulty deciding between 6112/5160 or 5100 for my 2013 tundra crew cab 4x4. I tow a 7500lb to 8500lb travel trailer about 6 times a year with a couple hundred pounds in the bed and the only off roading I do is some mountain trails when I’m deer hunting. I’m concerned more about ride quality on the road while not towing but also the peace of mind while towing. And also what about add a leaf or a whole leaf spring stack replacement to bring the rear up with the front lift and give more support for heavy load while towing.

My question for you is I was going to put 5100’s on a 22 F-350 dually lifted 5” running 37/12.5/22’s. Mostly will be towing a 34’ 5th wheel trailer occasionally then just a luxury truck. Hi! Do you recommend the B12 rear springs for 2018 FJ Cruiser running on 6112/5160 with stock rear springs? Love how it is riding now except for the annoying body roll on corners in low speed. I figured it must be the old springs. Thanks again for another great video!!
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 11 ай бұрын
Is the rear end sagging under load? Are you running front and/or rear sway bars? If you're not sagging, but dont want to increase ride height, then new lift springs in the back may not be the ideal move. If you want some ride height gain in the rear, then definitely, the b12 springs will give that added height and rate to help with body roll. A new beefier sway bar from Helliwig would address body roll as well. Reach out to us to dive into the details, would love to help - 213-433-3616

Hello, thanks for you video explaining Bilstein shocks and their capabilities. I do have questions for my specific application- I am rebuilding 1989 Jeep Wagoneer to be trail rider / semi rock crawler. It has solid axles and leaf springs all around. Going with spring over axle suspension lift which I’m told should bring about 6” lift and 4” upgraded leaf springs. Do you recommend the reservoir type 5160s over 5100 for this? Thanks

I have a 2020 Ram 1500 Laramie I want to build into an overlander, which do you suggest?
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 8 ай бұрын
If you do not plan on running too heavy of a front bumper, I recommend the 6112s and 5160s. However, if you want to run a lot of additional constant load ahead of the front axle, you may want to consider something you can upgrade the spring on, like Icon 2.5 coilovers. The 6112s use a proprietary spring design with no heavier alternatives. In contrast, a threaded body coilover like the Icons uses a universal flat ground coilover spring, with countless options for spring rates from companies like Eibach. That said, the Bilsteins are the better value, and we think they are tuned a little better for the average overlander or daily driver.

Bilstein 5100s should do the trick if you are plan on keeping it stock height now and might consider lifting it later. If I am not mistaken the lowest setting on the 6112s will still add a little lift to the front end.

Looking to level my 2018 F150 King Ranch 3.5EB FX4. Originally wanted the 5100s, but I hear there are issues when setting to max height adjustment whatever that is such as loss in travel, unbearably stiff ride, and excessive wear on CVs. Would the 6112 + 5160 set up alleviate mentioned variables? I don’t tow so I would be going for a true level in respects to the wheel well space seeming I’m not worried about my headlights being in the sky.
@ShockSurplus

You wouldn't have issues with the travel or wear on the CV. Preload is subjective as everyone feels comfort differently. For us, we have not seen any massive change if ride quality from running higher setting or more preload.

Now my biggest concern is that I’m seeing many people having issues with the factory UCAs coming in contact with the coil springs when set to max height on the 5100 and 6112 on the 2018. What height would be best to avoid this issue and also avoid needing to upgrade the UCAs? I imagine it would be different for the 5100 than it would for the 6112 given the different adjustment capabilities?

@ShockSurplus What is the truly difference between two oem shock replacements. KYB - Excel G shock absorbers VS. Bilstein - B4 shock absorbers? Is there one has a small feature that’s better than the other? What’s the difference?
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus Ай бұрын
The difference is going to be in materials mostly, Bilstein is using materials to ensure longevity, KYB is more oriented towards cost savings. Namely the seals that Bilstein use are superior to most, which gives their shocks such a long life span. That wiper seal that cleans the shaft before entry to the shock is best in the business, ensuring no debris is getting into the shock.

Very informative, can you elaborate on "the 90 day warranty really bites people in the butt." Thanks!
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 3 ай бұрын
Actually since this video was released Bilstein has updated their policy to a 2 year warranty on things like the 5160s, but at the time having the 90 day warranty certainly was an issue for a lot of people who ended up buying these parts. Bilstein probably has the highest build quality and production standards of any other manufacturer, so issues are the least likely of any brand, but nobody is perfect so there are still always some occasional duds. It was not uncommon for somebody to buy a set, not install them or check them for 3 months, find out they were leaking/defective when they went to install and be essentially out of luck with Bilstein. We obviously took care of a lot of people on our dime, but there were certainly a lot of people who got bit before they updated the warranty

@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus Жыл бұрын
That is correct. The vary from model to model. 5160, 8100, and 8112 have a 2 year and are more off-road oriented and are rebuildable by Bilstein. All the 5125, 5165, 8125, 9200, 9300 are universal so they have a shorter warranty and requite more prices calculations for setup.

It depends on the total constant weight on the front end. Bilstein 6112 come with a 600 lb. spring which is good for 0-80 lbs. of additional weight. You would upgrade to 650 lb. spring for 80-140 lbs. of additional weight. The most we would do is a 700 lb. spring which is for 150-220 lbs. of additional weight.

6112s are for vehicles that already have coil over strut suspension and will not work on a truck like yours that has torsion bars, leaf springs, and separate shocks. On your application the 5100s and 5160s will both offer very similar initial feel with the 5160s offering better heat dissipation under more extreme use. If you like to drive fast off road, or you turn a lot of miles when you are off road, then it may be a good idea to get a 5160 remote reservoir shock all around, otherwise the 5100s will do the trick.

The 5160s probably will not be all that much better under a load, however in most cases they are longer in travel so they do perform better with most aftermarket leaf packs.

I was originally going to go with your 5100 kit for my 2010 Lexus GX460 but after talking to Bilstein, they said that the 5100s would not work in the front and recommended the 6112 because of the added weight? Can you share if you guys have had a lot of applications of the 6112s in GX460 or GX470s? Are the 5100s valved differently because of the V8 up front? What do you recommend? Located in Colorado btw doing technical trails (slow crawling) and nothing too fast. Currently don't have much armor other than sliders and skids.

I am looking at getting a minimum of a 3", but ideally, 3.5" lift, or whatever I need to fit 35" tires with 20x10 wheels on a 2020 Tundra TRD Off-road. I will use the truck as a daily, overlanding, and occasional hauling. Can Bilstein's go higher than a 3" lift?

I have a 2019 f250 and I tow everyday down dirt roads, and the truck rides is rough. What would be the best shocks for my truck? I have a leveled truck 2” In Front and 3” in rear.
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 3 ай бұрын
Sounds like you might be simply measuring the rear blocks which these trucks come with from the factory. If the truck is sitting level and has a 2" lift in the front it is probably stock in the back. For your use a set of 5100s would more than do the trick www.shocksurplus.com/products/bilstein-b8-5100-monotube-gas-shocks-set-for-2017-2019-ford-f250-super-duty-4wd-w-2-2-5-lift

@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 2 ай бұрын
Nope not needed, but it can really help with tire clearance since you can align for more positive caster to push the front tires forward and net yourself some clearance from those pesky front body mounts, wheel tubs, and everything else behind the front tires

So for a smoother ride on road would the 5100s be better? Going on a 2016 Silverado 1500 and I’d have it set to the highest setting
@ShockSurplus
@ShockSurplus 6 ай бұрын
The 6112s will definitely ride better. The larger 60mm piston means they have way more potential dampening force and do not have to be tuned quite as stiff to provide the support for a full size truck with independent front suspension. The digressive design on both also means the larger piston of the 6112 allows for more oil to pass freely through the piston for better small bump sensitivity. Bilstein just released an "Extended Travel" 6112 that is adjustable from 1.75-2.75" of lift instead of 0-1.75" like the standard 6112s or 5100s. So if you were planning on running the 5100s or 6112s at the top setting for 1.75-1.85" of lift, you could get that same lift at the lowest setting on the extended travel 6112s which should allow them to top out less and ride better. They do require an aftermarket upper control arm though, so you will need to factory that into your budget/choice.

Hi buying a 2023 TRD Off Road Premium. Considering 6112/5160. I do a fair amount off roading in Moab, not too hard core. Fast dirt roads and some rock crawling. I do run into a lot of washboard roads. Seems like the 5160 would handle that better? Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

5100s require a small lift, use the 4600s if you're sticking at factory height, they ride the same. Fox does have 2.0s for factory height. Fox will produce more comfort, Bilstein will produce more handling, some overlap between the two but they definitely have a different feel between them

Bilstein 6112 are 2.5" diameter struts and do not offer a reservoir option . The reservoir only comes in the rear in the 5160 iteration. 2.5 series do not overheat more than smaller diameter. The large diameter body helps out and if they offer ar eservoir, they help out even more.
