Just to clarify the full name of the Japanese version is "Top Secret: Hitler's Revival" The Badds were really Nazis and Master D is Hitler. All Swastikas were replaced with eagle symbols. Nevertheless, It's still an amazing game, regardless of the censorship. I wonder how DID the head explode scene get past the censors?

Incase anyone is wondering about translation differences between this and the japanese version, everything is pretty much really similar. However, when you shoot the bazooka into the cockpitt, in japanese, Super Joe says "Go back to hell!" and then when the timer is running out and you have your final encounter with Groeder (big creepy mech guy) he says "I'll take yo down the path to hell!" or something along those lines.

"I was feeling different as I received the blessings from comrades." What touching, powerful words, Super Joe!

Superb ending to a great game. Back in the old days, playing 8-bit, my favorite games were the ones that had dialogue, cinematics, and character development.

man i just saw that and did the same thing...thought back to when we beat it as kids and thinking 2010 was just an unbelieveable time. i mean it was eleven years after we were supposed to party in 1999 lol...and 1999 seemed forever away too... :)

Just heard about this ending and checked youtube for it. I'm glad you posted it. Surprising for the old NES. I played this at a friends house growing up, but never saw the end. I always loved the game a lot.

This scene remains as vivid in my mind now as from early childhood. First time I made it here, I thought ... did I just see what I think I sawr? Exploding Hitler heads in Nintendo games- not quite common in those days. Its embellished goriness producing ooh and ahhs among adolescents. It's kind of a 'heady' moment when realizing the enemy of mankind in that game... The 'Badds'. The translation wasn't very subtle. PS. 'Gondamin' is awesome! Awesome tunes in Bionic Commando.

Me and my friends always used to joke that we would hear the whole story when they made the sequel, but it wasn't coming out until August 2nd, 2010. Turns out it's a little sooner than that. This game has a decent story, especially considering the small amount of dialogue and the fact that it's an 8-bit action game.

I spent many hours on this game listening to Metalica's Master of Puppets on repeat. Took me a few tries to Kill Hitler (Master-D).

I was just reading a slightly old article from Complex Gaming and it mentioned the Hitler thing. I guess the Japanese version had a "resurrected Nazi Empire" as the bad guys. The swastikas and references were removed in the NA version apparently...except for the likeness of Hitler at the end, it seems.

The whole ending seems like an homage to Mobile Suit Gundam. In MSG, Char flies past a ship, shoots a bazooka into its cockpit, killing the dictator inside. Then Amuro flies out of an exploding fortress into the arms of his comrades. :P

perhaps the censors thought no one would get this far? after all, Capcom did make Makai Mura/Ghosts n Goblins

The only other game to realistically simulate hitler-head gore chunks is the xbox remake. it was a technology that wasn't as used as it should have been, like GeoMod from Red Faction.

oh right he was called Master D! funny i never got why he looked like Hitler until a month ago. in the Japanese version it WAS Hitler, and the baddies the Nazis. but they changed that for the west version. but kept his face?! the only other famous person with a mustache like that is charlie Chaplin.!! :P still one of my fav game endings, the moment he runs back into the building and than that explosion. wow it is almost 2010...

There were so many arcade games that got far superior NES incarnations when they were ported over. Contra, Lifeforce, Bionic Commando just to name a few.
