Steve Walsh is the lead singer of KANSAS (at that time) and not the guy with the big hair. The guy with the big hair has a lower register than Steve Walsh. This is "orchestral rock". One of their album covers even shows them playing in an orchestra. This song is from the album LEFTOVERTURE, which is a great concept album from beginning to end.

The guy you thought was the lead singer plays the violin. Do you see or hear a violin in this song? Nope! But I assure you he's a BEAST on the violin, and a BEAST whenever he's singing lead instead on the piano/bongo player. Together, thier harmonies are pure heaven. Nothing like them. Ever.

I was so lucky to have gotten to seen them a few times as a teen in the late 70s and early 80s. They were my favorites and this song is so ubiquitous that I never thought that I'd see a first time reaction to it. That was kind of magical. I remember being a little bit in love with Steve Walsh too! Great choices on those albums! I remember all my friends having them, not just the prog rock kids!

Leftoverture is a bad bad album. And I mean good, by "bad". You don't pick out songs to play, you play the whole GD thing. And "Leftoverture" is such a cool name too. When I was a kid, I was shocked to learn that not a ton of people were into them. They were a definite notch below the big bands in popularity, but should not have been IMHO.

Great reaction Bisscute! Kansas was one of the great progressive rock bands of the 70's. The band was started by Kerry Livgren who was the blond hair lead guitarist. The music can be straight forward rock and can include intricate time signature changes and style changes such as this song. One of the signature sounds of Kansas which wasn't included in this video is the use of a violin. Another signature sound of Kansas is the lead vocalist, Steve Walsh, who you were amazed with. Even when Steve left the band they still found singers who sounded like him. They are still making music today and it is still great. Carry on My Wayward Son and Dust in the Wind are two of their most famous songs along with Point of Know Return .
@johnlanham9057
@johnlanham9057 Жыл бұрын
Check me if I’m wrong here, but ….. wasn’t it actually Phil Ehart who started the band. Granted, Kerry was the best & most prolific writer of the music we think of as from the real "Kansas" line-up. But, I think Phil was the one who started making calls and putting a line up together.
@WalterStinnettPhotography
@WalterStinnettPhotography Жыл бұрын
@@johnlanham9057 You are correct. I checked the history and there was the original Kansas band that Kerry Livgren started along with another musician that was together from 1970-73. But Phil started the band that we all know as the "real" Kansas and recruited Kerry after the original band folded. Mistakenly, I thought that the original Kansas carried on with lineup changes to the point of becoming the "real" Kansas. Thanks for the info.

Robby Steinhardt (the fellow with the huge mane of ginger hair) in addition to providing vocals is actually the VIOLINIST for the group - it just so happens that there was no violin part on this particular track. Yes, a rock band featuring a violinist. You should definitely check out more of their stuff - Point of Know Return and Dust in the Wind are two of their biggest hits (after Carry On).

Hello from Kansas! One of my favorite bands from that era. Those guys literally lived about 20 minutes from where I live. My roommate in college in the very early 1980s knew them directly, although they were slightly older than us, and he actually had some of their older band equipment (with "KANSAS" stenciled in white spray paint on them) incorporated into his massive stereo system, laugh. Along with other bands like Rush and Boston and Pink Floyd and so forth, Kansas was the favorite music of a lot of pot smokers.

Kansas as a group dealt in elemental ideas. "Dust in the Wind" deals with mortality and the temporary nature of all of our strivings. They often seemingly slap the listener around to demand their attention. They are an excellent group. Thanks for reacting to them. They are a bunch of home boys that started their careers just down the road from me at Lawrence, Kansas. Another progressive group from about the same time that you should treat yourself to is called "Yes". They are out of London and I'm sure you would like their song "Roundabout" They are excellent also.

This reaction makes me feel like I am hearing and enjoying this song again for the first time. Bisscute, your enjoyment of this music is in itself entertaining and fun. I love watching you react to great songs. I like it when you dance a little and when you get excited. It’s so cool to see all of your emotions come out when the music video affects you. There was this evil, dark-hearted woman who I wish I could forget. She worked at a job where my late father and I had been employed a long time ago. My father reported to me how she had confided in him that she saw me as the “wayward son” in this song - which I took as a compliment. She had meant it as a scathing insult but to this day I take it as a compliment. Even then, my father has taught me that it was me who should care what I think. First thing in the morning, I respect who I see in the mirror and I have no trouble sleeping at night either. Haters will hate; that’s alright because they play an important part in the adventure of existence. She had also tailgated me so close that I couldn’t even see her headlights. And I was speeding! Jeez, lady - we’re both going to the same place; just chill. I like you, Biss because you are cute - and your KZbin personality is way cool as well. You react to really great songs.

Bisscute, I love you for loving Steve Walsh, one of the best singers in rock history. There are not many male singers, who give me chills just by their voice - Steve Walsh does. Carry on wayward son of 1976 was on their 4th album Leftoverture and I can promise, this is from the good old times, when albums had 8 songs and all were great. I would really like to see your reaction to songs like Miracles out of nowhere or Magnum Opus of the same album. But if you want to hear the sweatest violin in rock music (yes Kansas has lots of songs with violin and the guy you thought first he's the lead singer, Robby Steinhardt, plays it), you should listen to the song Angels have fallen of their 6th album Monolith. I saw Kansas live in 1980 with these guys, the original line up, and it's a memory I'll never forget, not now 42 years later 🤘

This band's music is a deep rabbit hole to go down, as their catalog spans nearly 50 years. I recommend their songs, "Song for America", "The Wall", "Icarus (Borne on Wings of Steel)", "Child of Innocence", and "Relentless".

They are part Progressive part Southern Rock part Funk and experimental and very lyric driven as well as complex instrumentation. They had it all. Another great song for Meaningful lyrics is the same side as this song it is called THE WALL. The entire second side is one massive Trilogy or song or whatever you want to call it... it is a journey.

Love your reaction to this song, and yes lead vocalist Steve Walsh was considered one of the greatest tenors of his era, and yes bongo drums is the definition for what those drums were, sometimes they were referred to as conga drums also.

I was in band through middle school and high school, and I bought sheet music to rock songs. I was impressed with the keyboard music for another of their songs, The Point of No Return. There is a good bit going on that is not obvious. They were all talented musicians.

I had the sheet music books that were published for at least Leftovertue and Point of Know Return. I also had the books for the Styx albums from that era and into the early 80s and a few other artists here and there. I loved having all of the music for the album cuts. I think they are in storage now.

I have been a Kansas fan since I heard their first album Masque when it came out. If I had to recommend two Kansas favorites, they would be "Miracles out of Nowhere" and "Icarus, borne on wings of steel" Loved your reaction to one of the greatest prog rock bands in history. You cant go wrong with either song I mentioned.

"Masque" was not their first album. Their debut album was the self titled "Kansas". I hope you haven't missed out on that one, because it's great!

Song For America, All The World, and Lamplight Symphony are all great songs. BTW, Kerry Livgren (the blonde on guitar) also plays piano. He was playing piano on this piece. According to Steve Walsh (the lead vocalist on this song), He mostly played the organ, and Kerry played piano. The guy with the big ginger hair (Robbie Steinhart) plays violin. All these men are extremely talented. They are my all-time favorite band in their original lineup (like on this song).

Bless you youre so young and hearing the music from my era for the first time - Kansas was one of THE best bands to ever lay down a track, check out bot the albums called "Carry on wayward son" and "Point of Know Return" - two of their very best early albums. You also need to know the 70's to mid eighties was about the best era for classic rock theres TONS of greet music of all kinds from the 70's-!! Everyone got hung up on rap and hip hop and it all got lost in the weeds THIS is real kickass classic rock, rap is just a bad atititude with an over boosted bass beat.

Way back in the summer of 1977 while attending mechanics school at Marine Corps base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, 18 year old me had tickets to see these guys. Grabbed a couple of buddies set out. Of course a stop for gas and supplies, beer, cigarettes and snacks, we were off. About halfway there there was a radio announcement the show was canceled.

Kansas was a fantastic progressive rock group just like Rush, Jethro Tull, Yes, and others. The song you just listened to has been an inspiration for a lot of budding young guitarists over the years, and has been featured in games like Guitar Hero, and has appeared in many movies and TV shows. The album this was featured on, 'Leftoverture', is a fantastic album. There are no bad songs on it.

The audio is the studio version of the song with live video footage synced up. This was before it was common to make a music video for every single release. What you're hearing with the layered vocals is a blend of those two guys' voices during the chorus and on the verses, it's the lead singer's voice doubled. In fact, during the chorus, there is probably at least two tracks of each one's voice. When it's all mixed together it sounds glorious. This song is an excellent example of what you could do with vocal layering utilizing multi-track recording in the late 70's. The band Queen was the best at it.

You have no idea how fitting it is that you are wearing sunflowers on your clothes while reacting to Kansas. Don't know if you did it on purpose or if it was the most amazing coincidence of all time. As a native of the state of Kansas I love this. By the way if it was not intentional, the sunflower is the state flower of Kansas. Fantastic!!!
