EV sales have exploded! 1 year ago I was usually alone when charging, today I am lucky if I don’t have to wait more than 10 minutes in line at fast chargers. Id always prefer efficiency for that reason as the charging speed isn’t that bad. On a long run in the UK (usually about 240-250 miles longest in UK) I tend to stop for an hour after 120-130 miles for food so them speeds are more than enough. The further it can go before charging the better for me

If you deduct time solely based on time spent going at a lower speed, that means you’re not taking into account the lower consumption(which is a benefit). The lower consumption means you have to charge less kWh at the next charge stop, which in turn means a faster time. So to be fair you should not deduct all of the lost time. 🤷‍♂️ That said, maybe it’s too scientific. Take care y’all. 🍻
@vinterskugge907
@vinterskugge907 3 жыл бұрын
A good point. However, it applies only when you are still doing a reasonable speed, say 70 instead of 120 km/h. When you are instead waiting in a slow-moving queue to cross the border, consumption will be higher, not lower.
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 3 жыл бұрын
The lower consumption only takes 10-20 seconds to charge up. And the consumption was higher during the border queue. It evens out. Like I already said in the video, everything has been calculated and agreed by hundreds of people in the live stream.
@volvodashcam
@volvodashcam 3 жыл бұрын
@@vinterskugge907 Unless it's really cold outside I always gets really low consumption in slow moving traffic. EVs are kings of city traffic as well. :D I think there was some charging time gained by going slower both with the 70-zones and the border. Still, with +200kW those kWh gained was probably not more than 1 extra minute of charging.
@vinterskugge907
@vinterskugge907 3 жыл бұрын
@@volvodashcam As for low consumption in city traffic compared to doing 120, I believe you. But the border queue was much slower than that. Look at 19:15 and 20:05, just before and after the queue, where the battery goes from 14% to 11%. That's clearly a higher consumption than would have been the case if doing this short stretch at regular motorway speeds.
@jeffjiegao
@jeffjiegao 3 жыл бұрын
In my own observation, the Model Y has low consumption at around 50 km/h for sure. But the consumption is significantly higher at crawling speed around 20 km/h or lower.

driving in traffic can easily lower the consumption by 25-30%, not sure how to calculate this
@bjornnyland
@bjornnyland 3 жыл бұрын
Easy to calculate: At high speed, consumption should be 210 Wh/km At low speed, consumption should be 140 Wh/km Difference is 70 Wh/km. The stretches were about 10 km long. You would then save 700 Wh/km. At 200 kW, it takes 12.6 seconds to charge up 0.7 kWh. But you also have to add the increased energy needed to go through the border queue. It then cancels each other out roughly.

Hi Bjørn, are you gonna do a 1000km challenge with a Model Y RWD soon? I hope so. Will lease it anyway, but interested to see how it will compare to my former 2019 Model 3 SR+.

Long term effects of faster charging still under question. Could you find a fat E-tron or Taycan with more than 100K miles on the odometer and do a battery degradetion test?
@nanterre38

More than 100 charges on suc's and a lot on Ionity. Model 3 Performance, march 2019 50000km, only motorways in France at 130km/hour. Battery degradation is 6% and stabilized since some months. Fast charge is not as bad as people could imagine. Better to not call the full power when the battery and motors are cold. Like a ICE....

I saw a post on Norwegian e-tron group that a 2 year old e-tron with about 90k km on odometer had 12 % degradation tested by the dealership/repair shop. I need to verify it.

If it had not been too much to ask for, it would be interesting to have a 1000km challenge with a maximum of two (2) charging stops. I think a trip for families doing 1000km; two stops is optimum as long as you have children between 3-18years, as long as you force (yes, I meant force) them to go to the toilet just before you start and at the two stops. It's not optimal to have just 15-20 min to order and eat; eating in the car is ok for one of two adults but not for a family with children.

On 1200 Km we (with kids 3&6) have 5 charging stops and one for only WC :-) Mostly 12-24 min stops and 1x 30-40 minutes (but this is sometimes longer as we eat, but the car is already full (and off from the charger)). This is the same as with our fossil car last summer

Just add 15-20 minutes to all the tested times and you get roughly the time with 2 charging stops for most cars with good enough range.

What is the point to do a 1000 km challenge if not hold the speed limit. It is impossible to drive 1000 km in 9.45 hour with a lot of charging stop without speeding. Norway and Sweden does not have any autoban with unlimited speed.

Just for clarity, 207 - 70 = 137, not 147. So still 43kWh less than Ioniq 5, not 33kWh less.
