There was a study which showed that African hair usually doesn’t grow at the same speed of caucasian or Asian hair. Maybe she’s referring to that study. The study also showed that Asian hair usually grows faster and longer than any other race. Why do you think you can find video compilations of Asian and white women with Rapunzel hair that’s passed their knees? You can’t find videos like that of black women. They are compilations of black women with long hair, but most of their hair reaches their shoulders or mid back.

@@rosam674 Racist? I know that people say all hair grows at the same rate but no other study that I know of has been done to debunk the study. Asian hair is estimated to grow on averages around . 5 inches per month whereas African American hair growth somewhere around . 3 inches per month. Do think black hair can grow on average 5 inches per month? I don’t know why it’s so hard to believe Asian hair can grow so much faster. Humans are the same almost entirely biologically. There are just some things other races are more efficient at than others. I bet you won’t have a problem believing that black males on average have more physical strength than other races. And that black people can endure the sun better than other races. The mere fact that black hair is so different than others ethnicities just proves that humans are not 100% alike in everything.

I’ve noticed that black women with long hair have one thing in common; they all leave their hair the hell alone. They keep real simple routines and they don’t tamper with their hair very much. Most of the times their hair is tucked underneath a scarf, or in twists or underneath a wig. Their hair is ALWAYS protected. Protect your hair and it will grow.

So within 3 years most Black women's hair has grown enough to be considered "long". Understanding our hair and stopping the breakage is the key to retaining length.

Same with older family pictures; they had plenty of hair. 🤷🏾‍♀️ This *new* _lack of hair & edges_ amazez me as well. I’ve noticed the majority of women who are saying they don’t feel feminine with short hair are older black women. Reason being is because in their generation their mothers,aunts, grandmothers etc were calling them nappy headed, etc. So most of it stems from generational trauma leading them to believe they will only have long hair if you wear wigs, weaves etc. This generation is more confident in their hair compared to our parents. Additionally, there was no KZbin giving tips and tricks like we have now. I’m only 28 and I still see older people in my family believing you can’t grow hair unless you’re mixed. It’s simply ignorance and misinformation about black hair

Well at 28 you are living in the computer age with full access to hair care items/products/how to videos that promote that. Back in the day, we used white girl shampoo/conditioner, afro sheen hair grease or vaseline, sulfur 8 if you had a itchy scalp and a straightening comb fresh out the flame, lol. Which means most of the length and edges were burned off. If someone in your family had long hair they were biracial. But thanks to your generation, and innovations in hair care products and the fact that Black hair care is a billion dollar industry, we have all kinds of products to help our hair grow and thrive. Flat around the roots, loose wave on top that spike out to a point. Around the ears and neckline silk but tighter curl with a 3b texture. Fine hair but massive thick and curly only on the ends. My mother had it down to my elbows as a child. I have it below the shoulders. I'm gonna let it grow out to see how long she gets. The longer my hair gets the easier it gets and the texture changes. Most of the time it feels like silk.

I usually wear a loose curl puff in the back or a big spiked out one on the top of my head. Sometimes a slicked back ponytail into a braid. I style my hair every day. Usually some cream on the edges and brush it in. No water necessary. If I need extra curl or definition some curl cream activator stuff does the job quickly. I only wear it down inside the house cause I get too much attention with it out. She is big. Speak for yourself. Every woman in my family had long hair. Some still do.

Hair growing and hair retaining length are not the same thing. Healthy hair is beautiful hair. Black hair can not be MANIPULATED into styles everyday without causing breakage. That's why waist length Black hair is usually loc'd. ANY hair style that requires daily combing, brushing, braiding, twisting, etc. reflects the European standard of how hair should be maintained and does not optimize the health of black hair.

Sometimes these current feelings have developed after people were mean, rude, or had negative comments about her appearance that we did NOT get to witness. Education is key, each person is an individual and should be treated as such. 1. Sometimes there are vitamins one lacks in their diet which is why hair does not maintain its length. 2. Also, sometimes it's medical conditions like underactive thyroid or Lupus or Cushings disease. Medical issues may require some individual research on how to navigate your hair journey, changing your diet, medication/treatment plan, taking necessary vitamins,etc. 3. Some women have alopecia, again, this will require specialized research and treatment to fix, if possible. Proper hair care is vital but it is honestly trial and error for most. What works for one 4c head may not work for another. One woman's hair may love a mousse, another woman's hair gets dried out by mousse. This is why we research, try different products for ourselves or start making our own hair blends/masks. Some hair grows with black castor oil, some have hair loss with it. Some get growth from Rosemary oil or avocado/banana blend hair masks, etc. Learn YOUR hair and what YOUR body needs. Leave the rest. Tearing people down for lack of knowledge is ridiculous. If your hair is short for now, watch some videos on short styles or get a hair stylist that can slay short hair. Sometimes the presentation makes all the difference and boosts the confidence. Someone made a comment that she looks like Viola Davis. Yes she dose look like Viola Davis, but Viola herself only recently within the last few years decided she was going to stop wearing wigs and embrace her natural look. Viola spoke about how she had an issue with self image and how she didn't like the way she looked. She felt she wasn't petty enough, even with all her awards she hide under wigs. Wigs can be a great protective hairstyle. It doesn't mean we don't have long beautiful hair under wigs. It's a great way to change your hairstyle and color without damaging your own hair. But it doesn't make us any more or less beautiful. If we as a community especially black men stop putting down block women and comparing us to other races or mixed women then a lot of our black sisters wouldn't suffer with low self-esteem and self hate.

I’m experimenting shampooing my 4b/c hair everyday. Trimmed my hair April 1st and my bangs were next to my eyes. In almost 30 days, those bangs are at the bottom of my nose. Our hair grows really fast. I just think we have to wash it and stop doing those tight hairstyles.

I beg to differ lol. On a serious note, every hairstyle is not suitable for "natural hair". For example, perms and relaxers tend to cause more breakage in 4c hair than it does to 4a or looser hair. I know because I have both textures and was relaxed in high school. Braids damage thin hair more than it does to dense hair. All the women saying black hair doesn't grow are styling and manipulating their hair in a way that causes breakage. All hair grows. It's the lack of length retention that has some women confused.

Well there is something I noticed depending on your hair type in the 4 type category kind of dictates how fast it's going to grow. However with consistency and patience 4c hair can grow just as fast. It's just that we were not taught that from the time we were young. If our mothers knew better they would have done better. Now you see more mothers who know what to do with their daughters 4 type hair to get to grow. So when these little girls start kindergarten, they are starting kindergarten with hair just as long as the other little girls who are not Black. Because for a lot of us little Black girls know that's where it started that's when we really notice our hair was lacking and we felt confused. Like why is their hair like that, or I like my hair I just wish it was longer, etc. you fill in the blank. But yeah we weren't taught correctly how to grow our hair. But you knew those few "unicorn" Black girls when you were young, who had long hair and it was 4 type hair, even 4c hair.... And their mothers knew what to do and they weren't sharing the secret lol. But now we know better, so we can do better. All the information is out there now. Yeah it's a bunch of deciphering.... But it's not rocket science. Now it becomes a matter of patience, perseverance and learning to love our hair enough to wait for it to grow. Nurturing it, taking care of it, it's part of us, we were born with it. There's a lot worse things to be born with isn't there if you really think about it. I mean we were actually born with something unique and beautiful and we've been tricked into thinking that it's not. Because if we embrace it, reveals our power within and out. And we may find that if we take that patient spiritual hair journey, we will grow as our hair grows. We will start growing to know who we truly are. It can be very spiritually empowering to grow your hair like you could never imagine.... It's not an imagination, it's actually a reality, embrace it. Admit you are lazy with your hair. But that's only because you presume it to be difficult. Why are there not much more difficult things in life? Be real. The movement is happening embrace it, love what GOD gave you. GOD does not make mistakes . IT REALISTICALLY WILL TAKE YOUR HAIR AT LEAST FOUR TO FIVE MAYBE 6 YEARS TO REACH BRA STRAP LENGTH OR BEYOND. AND THIS IS ALL BASED ON IF YOU CAN KEEP YOUR LENGTH THOSE YEARS. And I have proven this on myself. I never had loose hair past my shoulders. But when I locked my hair for 20 years, it grew past my butt. So I buzz cut my hair at 59 to less than an inch almost 4 years ago. After watching the KZbin videos on 4C hair. I developed a regimen and now my hair is getting close to bra strap length, and it's very full. Okay and here's the kicker I'm 63 years old, my hair is 4C high porosity, thin strand, supposably the "difficult kind". But I don't think of it that way I think of it as my hair and I know it grows, I just need to learn how to take care of it to keep my length. See if I listen to what this lady saying I wouldn't even have attempted to grow my hair at such an age. Cuz supposedly at my age my hair isn't really supposed to grow. But I don't believe what people say, I always believe what GOD tells me. And there is power in prayer for all things that are good. And God has always told me to "wear the hair I gave you" All the information is out there now, there's no more excuses to keep buying that taboo voodoo cursed hair, or putting chemicals that kill you or make you sick for vanity's sake.

As a natural BW, I measure my "length" by how high my hair stands up. I have to "do stuff" to make it hang down my back. I like my high top hair. I also use shrinkage as a styling tool. With the combo of a twist out on top and a wash n go on the bottom, I've created some stylish hair "cut" looks without the scissors!

Our hair is different and that’s ok. Most black women length retention is slow and it is A LOT of care, time, and effort for it to get long. My mixed niece doesn’t have to do anything for it to grow super long fast. Asians, Hispanics, and most whites hair grows super fast and is easy to detangle or blow dry and go. In one year their hair is down their back and they can wash blow dry and curl it regularly without damage. Once our hair is healthy is a lot easier to maintain but let’s not act like that’s super easy. It’s easier for certain grades because the kinkiest of hair has a fine strand that is easily damaged.

I agree with her statement of… “ the black community thrives off ABUSE and TRAUMA!” It’s really a shame how we sometimes treat one another. I come from an extremely abusive family (e.g., my mother, grandfather and passive-agreesuve grandmother). My uncles and an aunt thought that it was okay to put their hands on me as well as most family members on my mother’s side. I know this is not the main topic of this video, but as black people we need to learn to keep our hands to ourselves. Just be cay out can physically put your hands on someone doesn’t mean that you should. As an only child, raised by by mother’s parents, most would probably say that I was very fortunate to have been raised by my maternal grandfather and grandmother. But the abuse at my grandfather’s hands as well as my own mother (who took after her father) was a extremely traumatic/demonic. I often cried/prayed for my biological father to rescue me (which never happened). Every aspect of my life was abuse and control. When I got married my husband saw it one day when I was about to discipline/spank our son. I am thankful and grateful because I didn’t want to continue that cycle of abuse. That’s not to say that our son has never been spanked. But, as parents (or guardians of children), there is a line that need not to be crossed. I know that The WORD of God says “spare the rod/spoil the child”, but I seriously don’t think that Jesus Christ meant for His people to abuse their children. The Word also says.. “Fathers, provoke NOT your children to wrath…” this verse is sooooooo important. That’s verse is “the line”. I grew up with a lot of HATE for my mother and grandfather and I knew that I had to forgive them if I wanted the Lord to forgive me. We as black people need to do better. It’s NOT always necessary to put hands on someone. We need to seek the Lord and pray and ask for His guidance. Our ancestors were brought to the U.S. under HORRENDOUS conditions and treatment. We have to do better and break that cycle of mistreatment. Love one another. Talk to your children and pray for and with them. Lean on the Word of God. And break those strongholds that keep holding us back. Don’t you know we are THE CHOSEN PEOPLE OF GOD!!!

She is healing by speaking her NOW truth. Natural hair does grow. I straightened my hair for many years. Now I love my natural hair. To grow hair, apply peppermint oil and castor oil to the scalp. Wash it at least every 2 weeks. Take a table spoon of extra virgin olive oil once a week internally, with lemon 🍋. Yes, eat the lemon after consuming the oil. Occasionally, I take castor oil, and I eat a lemon after. You will see your hair grow so fast. It's also about what you put in your body‼️ Don't eat too much sweets and carbohydrates. Exercising helps, get your blood circulating to your scalp ❤ massage scalp

Nutrition is the key and answer to why? I cut my hair in the summer because it’s really hot. Grow it out every winter because it’s so cold. It’s about 2” below my neck line from September to April. About 8” of hair growth in seven months. Processed foods alcoholic beverages and all those chemical products. You put in your hair doesn’t grow hair. They grow industry investors rich. I am in my 50s and majority of my life I have worn natural hair and nails. Only when I am required by "others" for special events, I will do a wig and/or fake nails. Over the years, many women and men have complimented me on being natural. I explained, that my head sweats, so I cannot do straight style nor do I like fake nails because they feel strange on my fingertips. We need to get back to doing what is"healthy" for us and not worry about what others think. You will instantly feel 100% prettier, stronger, and more confident when you are not scared of the rain or care about opening up a bottle. Also, we need to get back to highlighting our complementing to our natural sistahs and brothers versus saying things like" that doesn't look attractive". God made us in his image, so that makes us all BEAUTIFUL!

The key is to keep it moisturized and the only way to do that is use an oil gel. It coats the hair strain and use oil gel butters. Our hair don't stay moisturized for long. Once I switched to using oil gel my hair has far less breakage.

We have every texture of hair in my family. The standard/goal was to make sure your hair was clean and done before your hand hit that doorknob. I can't remember what shampoo or conditioner we used but the staple was a straightening comb, afro sheen and a jar of sulfur 8. If your hair was course, it was painful to get your natural hair done. So our mothers' used Vigoral (light green liquid chemical that smelled like rotten eggs) to gently relax our hair. because the kids would cry while getting there hair done. It was tough. But when our hair was done, it was manageable, neat with a cute little style. and we shook those curls around like princess's. And it was easier for our mom's to do our hair. No mother wants to struggle with their kid every day just to get their hair done. It cut down on a lot of drama/trauma. I had cousins that had long flowy hair that grow mid-back and I was envious as a child. But it was up to the parents to ensure that we accepted and loved ourselves as-is. But Grown-Ups can be petty AF too. My hair was like mixed chicks hair but one grade courser and I wore my hair in 2 plaits forever and got it straightened on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. It grew to a little past my shoulders but was full and healthy. It was what it was. But no one every said, I had a full, healthy or beautiful head of hair. But now I realize I did. In everything, you want to look and feel your best. So natural or not, no judgement. Or there shouldn't be. I get what this lady is saying. I am not a fan of afros/puff balls/cornrows and never wanted to have one. It was just a preference. I don't have the facial features to rock short hair so I have always worn my hair long and straightened. Relaxers for years. Now I am natural and get silk presses.

Hmm, lemme tell ya. I've had long hair all my life until the 7th grade. Girls used to play in my hair, and at one point, i thought they had "rooted" me because after i suddenly cut my hair into a bob, it never grew past my shoulders. Prior to the cut, it was past my mid back (im 5'3). My stylist and momma didn't want me to cut it, but Monica was in, i loved her, and i wanted HER hairstyle like. Fast forward 30 yrs later, and i now wear U and V part Brazilian kinky wigs because that's the texture my natural hair is, so it blends perfectly. I take it off every 3 days to wash my natural hair and the human hair wig. My hair has grown 6-10 inches monthly 😲 and now past my shoulder blades. What's my secret? Castor oil, tea tree oil for my dry scaly scalp, and leaving it the hell alone when i braid it down for the wig.

When I found out that my hair needed different than what my child needed I started to realize I had been going about my hair care all the wrong way. I found out what my hair needed. I have had long hair down my back many times, I literally just got at least 2 inches cut two months ago and the length of back and then some in some areas longer than it was. My hair grows so fast that hair salon managers say it every time I show up. I have 4c hair. If I keep my hair twisted for a year it gets long very fast. I found out that aloe vera and peppermint and castor oil and avocado and olive makes 4c hair grow fast and rice serum or rice water. If I do rice water treatments month then it really takes off.

Well I need someone to explain mine. Ive been natural 9 years and my hair has not grown pass my neck. I've done it all. Aloe coconut oil, rice water, henna, leave in conditioners, shea butter, mango butter, multi vitamins, etc. And it still breaks constantly. It doesn't work this way I have been natural since 2017 6 years and half now, to be honest I didn't see that massive growth until 2022 when I stopped over manipulating my hair. I know genetic may play a role but if you're not handling your hair with tender, love and care? Why is there never common sense on this topic? There are some black women, according to their personal genetics, who will have long hair. Then there are some black women according to their personal genetics who will have short hair, and then there are some black women according to their personal genetics who will have medium length hair. Because even within our own race we are not all the same. I frame my before mentioned statements, in the assumption that the above black women have good hair care practices. And, truthfully, the older a black woman gets the less youthful she will look with natural hair, particular the grayer it gets, be it straightened or not. Gray hair does that. But white women, with their natural textured short hair (white women, generally, will cut their hair when they get older because they consider long hair to be too youthful 💁‍♀️) will looks less youthful, as well. My hair was shorter when I was younger (I mainly wore a natural aka an afro, Nina Simone style) but it is longer now that I am older. What made the difference was that I stopped going to salons consistently and learning how to use hair products and practices that were best suited for my hair. But despite the length that I have been able to achieve, the crown will NEVER reach my shoulders and the sides of my hair will NEVER go below the top part of my shoulders. The right side of my hair will NEVER be equal in density to the left side of my hair. I have my mother's hair. I wear my natural hair, as part of my regiment to keep my hair healthy--but it is my least favorite type of hair to wear, because as an older woman I feel less youthful when wearing it: I compensate this feeling by wearing a more applied makeup--something I don't do, unless it a special occasion, when I where my hair flat ironed, a weave, or a wig--or even braids. Yes, I dye my hair. My main thing about this issue is I don't want women feeling frustrated and like a failure because they couldn't acheive that long hair look of a hair influencer, despite diligently trying because of their own personal genetics.

Monica left out the fact that her Father's side is mixed, but I get her point. Anyways, BW hair on my mom side (Non Mixed) grows very long to waist length, some knee length. Black people have SHRINKAGE, so it looks like the hair doesn't grow fast.

Yes. Our hair takes more time to grow long but IT DOES GROW LONG. My hair in my profile picture is all mine and is down my back when stretched or straightened, granted it took about 5 years to get that way. Patience and taking care of it helps. It will grow long, it just takes time.

i do look pretty with my natural hair. i look the prettiest because it goes with my full features. Im more self conscious and feel less pretty weaeing hair that everyone know isnt bad. i felt most conscious taking off a wig every day and being faced with my natural self. So glad thats behind me and i learned to pour into my hair.

I wish I could wear my hair natural. I get a perm every 6 to 8 weeks. Every beautician I've had over the years is surprised at how kinky my hair is. In it's natural state, a comb gets stuck in my hair and when I start combing, it breaks. So I continue to see my beautician every two weeks. Eventually I'll find a way to transition from perm to natural.

You remind me of a friend from high school, she finally tried to perm her hair at the end of school but the hair still remained the same. She had beautiful really dark thick hair, unfortunately at that time we didn't know any healthy natural hair care, so she found it quite difficult to manage.Hope your stylist takes the time to help educate you on your transition.
