I was about to relax my mid back length natural hair recently. I’m disabled and caring for my hair was so hard on my body. But instead I just cut about 8 inches off and it’s changed my whole hair care routine. I used to take 2 days to do my hair. One was washing and deep conditioning and any other treatments. The next was styling, typically twisting it or braids because I don’t really go anywhere and I can still style them quickly to go somewhere. Now I can do everything in one day and it’s just a few hours instead of days worth of work. I love my hair. But physically I just couldn’t keep doing it and financially I can’t get it done every two weeks. No one speaks about the disabled women who have natural hair and what issues we have that may lead us to relax it or wear wigs and weaves instead of our own hair.

And type 4 hair that is long is seen as amazingly exotic. Regarding hair types is just divide and conquer tactics, and to scare women with the coily so called type 4 hair from showing their beautiful hair glory. It seemed to have worked again the agenda. 'Nothing new under the sun.'

Amen. If I ever wear it out I either do a twist out or blow it dry. Unfortunately there is a double standard in the black hair community. You can wear you unaltered fro but it can’t be type 4 hair bc it’s not desirable or deemed pretty. It’s been like that for years and I don’t think we will ever grow out of that mindset if there isn’t enough representation to embrace it.

@@sarahwilson6458 Are you an Afro-American woman? It seems in the Afro-American community coily hair that is considered type 4 is undesired. It's not like that in the Afro-Caribbean community especially the British Afro-Caribbean community in London, UK. The texturism is no way that bad, despite the Afro-American influences. America sounds really horrible, the colourism and texturism is off the roof in the Afro- American community. The majority of Afro-American women I would assume have coily, what is ignorantly described as type 4 hair. So what is the problem?

All the rules are what cause the natural hair fatigue. I keep my hair stretched, I wear half wigs maybe one day a week, and I don't do wash & go. I get more compliments on my natural hair than I do in a half wig. Everyone needs to do what's good for them. I consider myself a lazy natural so I don't find it to be a crazy amount of tiring maintenance, but a lot of these ladies are doing the most and I can see why they get burned out.

Ladies, adjusting to the social norm of straightening our hair or wearing another races hair texture on our heads is a mindset that is very difficult to overcome but the benefits to loving yourself as is unlocks a new level of confidence like no other! I used to get upset because my hair would not lay down after I relaxed it and it would always frizz up! After all those years of struggle I realized it was just not meant to be relaxed. It was meant to defy gravity! I use to wear the most luxurious wigs and weaves but nothing has ever compared to the beauty I feel from wearing my own natural hair ( now 8 years of long waist length locs). I have never received so many compliments on my overall appearance until I began to love and nurture what God gave me. It wasn’t until after I stopped trying to be something I was not that I found the Gold! I also realized what type of psychological warfare we as women of African descent goes through here in the US. We are beautiful as is! Put all the love and energy you put into weaves into your own crown because everything grows with love!❤

@@fayelis Yh and if you are doing a wash and go/ twistout, unravel one twist at a time and apply your styling products. After your hair has been styled and dried, do the banding method ( probably into 2/3 sections) before you put your hair in your bonnet/ scarf at night. Im going to say it and I absolutely do not care about the backlash. MOST OF THESE WOMEN CAUSED THEIR OWN PROBLEMS!!!! "I gOttA wEAr mY wiG" and "I gOttA spEnD rEnT oN wEaVE" like, no one told you to do that. Nobody forced you to do that. Can someone please tell me why weave and wigs are what doing their hair is to them, because people act like they have to go hand and hand. A lot of them made the natural hair journey unnecessarily hard for absolutely no reason other than they just wanted to go with every single trend they saw. They choose a high maintenance life, it really didnt have to be even half as hard as they made it out to be. Yes I do understand that some black women do have big problems with their hair, but you really do not need to be spending thousands getting weave and your hair braided or spending 8 hours a week doing your hair. It is not your hair, IT IS YOU! I have VERY, VERY, VERY thick, long, and low porosity hair. I guess im what you call a lazy natural because I usually wash and retwist my hair once a month (could do it more often if I wanted to, but why bother if once a month is working with no itching?). Natural hair is not hard, its only as hard as you make it out to be. How much do yall wanna bet in about 6-12 months at least 60% of these natural to perm girls will regret their decision? And before anyone says it, no im not hating, this is just a vent because Im really sick of weak minded naturals, who went natural just because everuone else went natural, and follow every single trend they see without thinking about anything. Its sad really, they got the big chop because of the natural trend, grew their hair to great lengths, and then perm again? This all could have been prevented with some critical thinking skills and proper knowledge on how to take care of your hair. START THINKING AND STOP FOLLOWING EVERY TREND, whether your natural or not.

I'm not good with my hair either way. I lack the skills and patience. Relaxers are work as well in that I had to get them often (BIG difference in texture with 4C new growth), which wasn't healthy. I prefer natural because I don't miss wasting my Saturdays in the salon. As long as I have enough hair to pull back into a bun, or can add a textured hair piece, I can make myself presentable in less than 10 minutes. The beauty industry would collapse if BW stopped spending money on hair products. So they will always push the idea that we need to make our hair do something it would not otherwise do.

I'm a natural hair woman and idc who got a problem with it. I do my own hair and when I have one of my hair treatments in I wrap it up in a scarf for weeks then wash and style either in mini twist or a low manipulation style. Me embracing my hair shouldn't make me feel uncomfortable and I'm not not gone allow others to make me feel uncomfortable because of my hair. Other women can do as they please, but ima show up as ME!!! I use to wear a lot of weaves and stuff in my teenage years and early 20’s then when I hit mid 20’s I began to fall in love more with my natural hair rather than my braided or quick weave styles and since then my edges have grown back, my hair is fuller, etc. Without all the tight yanking and high manipulation hair styles to “fit in” The more you wash and deep condition your hair the more your texture will naturally soften because it's moisturized and healthy. The hair that naturally grows out of my head ain't ugly and doesn't make me look ugly!!! It's the hate of others when I wear it that's ugly. It's like they be mad because you don't hate yourself so they gotta hate your natural hair for you in attempts to bring down your confidence in who you truly are. I see through the tactics and I'm not moved and most of the time it be other black people who do it #Fu@kThemPeople 😂🪮🤎

I think that I probably don't feel some type of way about wearing my natural hair in public or at work because I never got a chance to live with it at a younger age and form any negative opinions about it. I look so much better with it in its tight coily state too which is just an added bonus for me.

I only get my hair flat ironed once or twice a year. I only have two styles: my hair braided (with my own hair) and a braid out. But when I get it flat ironed, I get treated so differently. One year I flat-ironed my hair and someone asked, "Excuse me, but are you a lawyer?" Later that day, somebody asked if I was a doctor. A lot of people asked if I was from India. I felt extremely self-conscious. It didn't even feel like my hair, even though it was my hair! Another year, I had my hair flat-ironed and some customers at work started to flirt with me. I know some women might be flattered but over the years I have found it very disturbing, this obsession with straight hair or even nearness to straight hair. I meet a lot of women daily who are trying to grow their hair. They are all hair types but a majority are somewhere near 4C. Many of them are trying to make their hair into something it isn't and get frustrated. I had to learn to love my hair and know what it did and didn't want to do. I learned to respect it. My hair is not hers, her hair is not mine and each of us has different needs. The more people want to talk trash about a Black woman's hair the more it reveals their secret admiration for it. Even the earliest goddess statues had coily hair. Black women should stop listening to people who don't want them to thrive or embrace themselves. There will always be something we are doing "wrong" even if we are following the list people gave us to follow. There are bald-headed Black supermodels, and there was Grace Jones with her architectural hair. Do what you want to do for YOUR hair. They are just mad that they can't be YOU.

We still wear our natural hair. In fact the whole natural hair movement has not only helped us develop many new ways to grow our hair long, but is destroying so many negative ideals and misunderstanding. I don't hear nor deal with half the things I did in the early 2000's about afro hair, because its becoming more common and more information online and in person about it. Shrinkage was a cool thing and now people even ask me "oh how long does it get when you stretch it?!" because they're starting to associate density with length - as it should be. I don't have an issue with people touching my hair, so I let them have fun experiencing it. Touch is a very primitive way of bonding, and its cultural - bonding when we can share in moments of our differences. I've had ZERO issues with men...except yep you guessed it BLACK men. Black men are chasing status and validation given them being treated like lesser men in this country for so long. Men thirst for status a lot more than women do, and unfortunately women (and men too,) get objectified for "status" reasons. Its kinda funny because whenever I'm around other black women in weave, things get a bit awkward, because not only am I pretty, but my natural hair is longer than their weave (LOL.) Black women weaved up start to feel real uncomfortable around sistas with long natural hair, and that's because the male gaze / human gaze is snatched by afro hair the way it's snatched by blonde hair. A natural black woman just stereotypically comes off as authentic, down to earth (as BBL girls kinda ruined the weave game,) good with money as we aren't spending hundreds on wigs, and more confident. Not saying that to put weave ladies down at all, but just bringing awareness to the shift in world mentality about afro hair, because we started wearing it out more. Give it 10 more years and everyone's gonna laugh at the fact that we even had a natural hair movement, because natural afro hair will just be so common. These gen-alpha babies now have mothers who KNOW how to grow out afro hair, so 6 year olds got afro hair down to their ankles lol. All of those black girls are going to grow up not facing half the trouble us older ones did, which means afro hair will be normalized for them. That's what we want, a better future for the youngins, a better future for afro hair.

Please take a read... ❤ I have had natural all my life. However, there have been times when I wished I could style my hair quickly. There were times I envied my friend who cut it short. However, I knew if I cut mine, then I personally would regret it after my knotty period was over. During covid I detangled in the shower and with shampoo and that really help phase out some of my irritation. I also have to say thank you for the some many black female, KZbin content creators out there. Without the awareness, discussions and testimonials I would have never found a routine that works for me. There are many ideas out there. Find the approach that best suits you. Don't be discouraged ladies. Our hair teaches us patience, understanding, acceptance, gentleness and constant self improvement. When we look at it from this perspective we resent it a lot less. Also, our hair gives a sense of community with other black women, knowing our hair struggles are not ours alone. And if there is anything thing we can't handle, there is always headwear in the interim.

I grow my hair in wash and go’s and I know it’s hard for most to do that, but it’s been working sooo good for my hair and all I do every night before bed is put it up into twisted Bantu knots, loose twists, or braids and then cover with a bonnet. Every day I wake up with beautiful curly hair and it saves me so much time bc I don’t have to take time to do my hair before I head outside like I used to do. Moral of the story is that you need to find out what works for your hair and what it likes. Sweetie no. The men are now copying us so they can grow and accept their hair without using locs (nothing wrong with locs, but it’s a common misconception among men that their hair can only grow with locs). All of the OG KZbin videos, all the old forums/blogs to read. Not a single one even hinted at men and their acceptance of our hair. It was all about self-discovery and self-love. AND there were a sprinkle of OG KZbinrs who were men, their channels just weren’t as popular. Men and women’s natural hair (as far as ‘impressing’/‘proving’ to each other) wasn’t a conversation until red pill became a thing-that’s less than a decade old. The true origin of the natural hair movement goes all the way back to the 1970s. Men and women started it together and took different roads. But more and more of us are ending up in similar locations.

Thanks for this video. I have coily hair 4c. I have been natural since 2012. For the past 10 years, I've kept my my hair in box braids. It was fine until i had my son. My scalp and my hair will no longer tolerate them anymore.myhair will get so dry and brakenoff in the worst way. Im sure its because because of the years of wearing them. It could be hormonal. Or the brading hair could have changed over years. I dont think braiding jam helped either. But I've come to realize that i never gave myself time to learn how to properly take care of my hair because i could always hide behind braids. I did them myself and always gotten compliments on them. So im on another journey of learning how to take care of my hair. Now that hairstylists are finally spilling the tea about hair science 🙄. Its not as hard as i thought. I wanna be able to teach my daughter how to care and love herself, if i have one in the future.

I wanna add this too. I've written life off as a game. I recently stopped playing video games for some reasons but thinking of life like a video game has helped me understand life a whole lot better. In some games, the character you choose can make the game easier or harder. You have access to different areas or even missions. Bringing it to real life, I think of our hair as the same thing. Certain hairstyles will open up social groups ,or even better, financial opportunities. Same with weight/appearances. Now this is f×cked up. In real life it shouldn't matter. I shouldn't have to put on a wig for ppl to accept me especially my own ppl. But that's how the game go. How you wanna play it? If u can't stand how ppl treat you with your hair, what is the plan.? Truth is, They dont have accept your hair. Its their personal choice. There are infinite possibilities of how u can go about it. You can not subscribe, wear your hair how u want, and live your best life. Or your can play along to get where you going. You can get what you want out of life either way, really. We just have to be aware and understand how each path will affect us and how we truly want to live our lives.

It's hard to manage and maintain even if your hair grows long unless you are really a great hair dresser or stylist it is difficult. If you have psoriasis, dermatitis, fuzzy or frizzy hair you cant be one of those girls who can wear braids, sew ins or extensions for even a month much more three months. Then its not only time consuming but expensive with prices from hair dressers and hair stylists. Natural hair products are also expensive typically unless you are going to stick with just using grease and lotion and you still cant leave it out, or leave it in certain hair styles because it will get knotted and dry. It's pretty hair just not easy hair. And I am saying this as someone who had had natural hair for the majority of their life from childhood to adulthood and only briefly processed it before reverting to natural.

If I were to do mini twists or a blow out, it would take me HOURS! I have long thick mid back length hair. Sometimes it’s annoying having to spend an hour doing your hair every week so I can understand their frustration. Also I wore my natural hair on vacation FOR THE FIRST TIME and I will never forget the STARES I got. Why is it wrong to wear my natural hair to a WATER PARK ?! Who cares if it’s frizzy ?! Finding the best style for type and length of hair and buying the correct styling tools is hard work. Not to mention how your hair is going to respond to weather, wind, heat or moisture in the air is another problem. An afro may not look the same after you get where you're going.... I hear you, especially hair's response to environmental factors, for the few times I tried to wear my hair straightened (blown out), it was back into its afro state a few hours later. But I feel things like that can be avoided if we don't try so hard to make our hair do what it's naturally supposed to be doing, and if we choose otherwise then we shouldn't be disappointed at how much work needs to be put it🤷🏾

Natural hair imho is difficult for women who truly utilize their hair as if it’s an outfit…and they wanna wear a new outfit every day and they are being smart to braid their own hair underneath those wigs. I’m a Basic Bonquesha way past trying to impress others solely based on my appearance as long as I’m clean…so natural for 45 of my almost 50 years and I used to get braids aka extensions, however I was never into wigs or weaves. I also attribute my thickness to low manipulation and leaving my hair alone. I never was into trends and it’s a no brainer if you need attention…wear that kinky Afro and minimal makeup…you’ll stand out trust me.😊. Also men will often go for the trend doers assuming they are into impressing others aka men… meanwhile you wear your Afro and holding a book…Chile they see danger so this one trendy saying that I do like: rejection is protection.

Lmao so I kind of did “quiet quitting” on my natural hair. It only grows to a certain length which is long enough for me. I now Make my wash day happen for only 1 hour because I’m just over it. Wash and condition, comb with jumbo ugly twist. When it’s time to go I just put it in a ponytail and leave.

I've been to a hair salon twice in my life. The first time it was just a wash because my step mom wanted to take me and my grandma on a girls day and that was fine. I remember my stepmom was surprised they didn't charge more for my hair because it took so much longer than theirs. The second time, however.. I was in high school and wanted a tapered cut for my birthday and failed miserably attempting to do it myself so my mom was nice enough to take me to a salon to "fix" it. Long story short, the lady put a texturizer in my hair because it was too thick for her and said it was "temporary". It didn't even look anything like the picture I showed her. I wore it for a few months, until the lack of shrinkage was pissing me off too much that I cut the texturized parts off. I've been to barbers since, only when I wanted a design or professional looking haircut, but other than that, I've gotten the hang of cutting it myself for the most part

Bra strap length here. I spend 45 minutes washing and 1 - 2 hours styling dependent om the style. I domt do braids or twists unless i have time. Updos are my go to. I wash every 2 weeks. It took me 3 years to reach here. I learnt to do my hair. My entire family complained but now they are jealous of my growth. What causes this is lack of education. Coily hair is easy if you know what you're doing. If not, do what worka for you. But hair doesnt have to be painful And 9 times out of 10 black hairstylists hate 4c hair and will see you as a burden My two cents on tne matter (also i have a full time job, hobbies and demanding family but no kids though)

I hate this video, not the actual work of the video you did a fabulous job. The subject of us hating our hair. I did too, but one day I decided I would keep trying, so I started washing and twisting it. Yes, it takes time, but I'm now proud of the fact I did it. Yah !!!!! BTW, I love your work (video) new sub and yes I hit the "like" button on the way in.

I've been natural since birth so I couldn't care less what anyone says but It mostly annoys me when I get comments about my natural hair from blk men like wth you should be applauding blk women wearing their natural hair out. Like what level of uneducated is this?

I’m white and my natural hair is still hard to take care of. So I can highly relate to this video. But no matter what race I always thought all natural hair looked the best 😊

Our hair is our connection to the divine source and they know this it is why they get mad when they see it in it natural state. Malcolm x once asked" who taught us to hate our hair?" It was the others who knew what our hair represents.
