The way this woman feels is symptomatic of how a huge proportion of black people feel about themselves. In the famous "Doll Test" social experiment which has been carried out many times since the fifties, whereby children as young as kindergarten age were presented with two dolls, which were the same in every sense apart from one being white and the other black and then were asked a variety of closed questioned such as "Which doll is the bad doll? Which doll looks pretty? Which doll looks most like you?" demonstrated that children under the age of five of different ethnicities had already formed hard wired views about racial stereo types and beauty. This social experiment demonstrated that whilst Europeans had a positive image of themselves, black children had low self esteem issues which were formed at a very young age. European standards of beauty are so pervasive that they are world wide. They have affected the mentality of people world wide. The agency of European standards of beauty are very powerful. The media is possibly the biggest proponent of European Standards of beauty. However, even before the film industry got started the written and oral media in the form of fairy tales like Goldie locks, Beauty and the Beast, The Ugly Duckling etc were told amongst the European community which emphasised a certain type of beauty standard. Then came the visual media in the form of TV and Movie era to exacerbate these stereotypes. Romcoms where the female lead character had to be European and super heroes such as Batman, Spiderman etc were also European. Competitions such as Ms World where no person in history has ever won that had natural African descent hair and a dark complexion. All of these agencies and institutions have a profound effect on what it means for person of African descent to be beautiful especially when deep down they realise that they do not fit into European standards of beauty. Long story short, this is why there are serious self esteem issues in the black community. These psychological problems manifests themselves in different ways. In Africa and the West Indies there is a problem with people who bleach their skin. There is a problem with people who relax their hair, wear wigs that imitate the hair type of people of other nations. I would even argue that the use of makeup such as "blusher" is totally unnatural to deeply melanated African females. It is extremely rare to see positive reinforcement of the natural beauty on mainstream media. Black News anchors seem to be universally forbidden from repping their natural hair. It takes a very brave and confident black woman to go for a professional job interview repping the natural look. However, IMO, one of the saddest ways that people of African descent show their self hate is in the phenomenon that is really gathering pace atm and that is by actively seeking to be in interracial relationships ........ for no other reason than to birth mixed race babies who do not have typical African descent phenotypes. SMDH. The knock on effect of all of these things is that although it is not impossible but it is very difficult for parents to raise their children with positive reinforcement about natural beauty when the children from a young age yearn to look like their idols. It is customary in West African schools to ban African females from having long hair because of the distraction that their hair could potentially cause. However, by the time these females leave secondary school, they abuse their hair so much that by the time they are in their mid forties, many of them have bald spots. SMDH. As a black man, I accept your challenge of complimenting black females and letting them know that they are beautiful naturally. I love my black Kweens.

@@ComeMekWiTalk: Thank you so much for your kind words. I loved the way you addressed the issues raised in the video. I agree with the points that you made and since you made them I wanted to draw the connection to how we as a people got into the position of being a traumatised. It's my firm belief that our trauma and poor self image started in slavery and colonisation. The impact of these atrocities are still reverberating in our community today. It was during this time that many of our ancestors were introduced to Jesus as being European looking and angels ..... who were also white and pure. Jesus represented all that was good and holy. Simultaneously we were introduced to the devil and all that was dark and evil. However, if the stories from the bible are to be taken on face value, we now know that it would have been impossible for Jesus to have been European looking. According to the scriptures Jesus lived between North East Africa and the Middle East and therefore it is logical that he would have had melanin in his complexion. However, Europeans took the bible and superimposed the popular European image Jesus that we know today. It is my opinion that the Europeans knew exactly what they were doing when they recreated and claimed the image of Jesus. On the one hand it gave them a sense of dominion over people of colour. On the other hand it would have been illogical for them as a people to pray and worship a God that didn't look like them. As a group, black people are the only people on the planet who pray to a god that doesn't look like ourselves. Today, in many West African countries, there are huge statues of white Jesus. If you go to African christian's homes, you will be inundated with images of white Jesus. A couple of years ago, a European actor went to Kenya and was asked to dress up and pose like the biblical Jesus. This guy was literally mobbed by the Africans there who thought he was the real thing. SMDH. The question is, how can people with that kind of mindset not only love themselves BUT protect themselves from unscrupulous Europeans who are out to take advantage of black people's insecurities? The reason why I go by the name "black magic" isn't because I believe in the occult. I do not. It's because I believe in black people and I believe that we are magical beautiful people. It is also to reclaim the word "black" and "magic" which in the English language have very negative connotations. The English language is full of words that have negative connotations that make black people feel negative about the colour black. E.g blackmail, blacklisting, blackhead, blackballing etc. I say all of this because when we see our people demonstrating behaviours of self hate, it is my belief that they have been traumatised through many agencies. i.e. religion, media, language etc. I stumbled across your channel last week and immediately subscribed because I you deal with issues that affect the black community. I look forward to watching more of your content. Keep it up sista.

So true, Black magic. I raised the Doll experiment with Maxine for another vlog, definitely relevant here. We definitely need more conversations on this within our communities. Because it is still very relevant today, how we see ourselves. Bleaching in particular African and Caribbean communities also ties into these conversations. I noted your observations around colorism when it comes to the acceptable face of relationships, with significantly high numbers of Black males favouring outside of their own. And thank God Traore in Bakina Faso is bucking the Trend when it comes to young girls embracing and growing their hair. We need more revolutionary like him (and I am using it loosely) the overhaul the clearly entrenched, passed down colonial/Neo colonial strongholds that that have on our people’s, from every aspect of our lives. Particularly on the African Continent, in the Caribbean, but also in our own homes and specific communities. It’s a very big subject really. But we have to start with ourselves🙏🏾

I know I look feminine with my natural hair, no one would mistake me for a man. I adore my self, I do not have low self esteem. I accept that because I am black and not mixed with any other race, my hair may not grow to the length as some other race. I do not thrive off abuse and trauma. I am wondering if this lady had some trauma, Please lady, try to love yourself as a beautiful black person. Black women these days wear their hair short which looks so beautiful. I love my hair!

Looking feminine by ‘who’s’ standards ? And that’s the problem the Eurocentric Mindset. With all due respect and in my opinion she doesn’t look better with wigs. Black hair ‘does’ grow and that’s the other problem some BW (and she’s probably one of them) don’t know ‘how’ to look after their hair. She really does need to speak for herself , less of the ‘we’ please, many, many BW embrace their natural hair and feel feminine as they are.

So this lady is beyond crazy, she needs mental help. As a black woman, I don't think I'm a unicorn. Hair is hair. It's all about understanding your hair. I have had my natural hair been to waist length multiple times. Every time I cut my hair it grows right back. I have never worn a wig in my life and I have been natural with a relaxer for 20 years. Feminity has nothing to do with the texture of your hair, just listening to her I hear zero feminity sorry.. I just installed microlocs because my loose hair took too much time to deal with. But this case comes down to self-acceptance.

And you are right black hair doesn't like messing around with. Both my friends and I come to that conclusion. Because two of my friends got their hair lock and I saw one last week I couldn't believe it was her real hair do long. And she has been trying to grow it for years.

I hated my hair until I stopped trying to make it be something it wasn't and embraced what my hair is designed to do. I put my hair in locs and for the first time, probably within the last 6 months and I'm 42 years old, what I saw in my mirror was absolutely gorgeous. I was messing around posing and I pulled my hair around my head playing with it, and oh, my goodness, I am beautiful. Me. All by myself, with nothing that's not naturally occurring attached to me. Don't get me wrong, sometimes, I look a hot mess but I clean up good. I bet you do to if you stop trying to force yourself to be a something you're not. Who you are is enough, you don't have to hide behind or cover you with other things to make you good enough. That's a lie they make a lot of money selling us. Embrace you. Embrace what your body's is designed for. We are made to walk in the light. Our hair is resistant to pests, we don't get infested. This is a good thing. Let the water stop running and power go out for a few months, who's scalp will be healthy? Let people get stuck in crowded living conditions, who won't have lice eating them alive at least on their heads? We have hair, not fur. And I'm not knocking anybody else, I'm just saying we have hair, not fur. There's nothing less than about our hair.

Wow!!! She has issues. It’s on a individual basis, in relation to hair growth. She doesn’t love herself to wear her hair naturally, probably programmed to feel, bad about her own identity. She should love who she is, not for any man. To think she only way she looks good is by wearing, a wig, is a sad situation to hear and see. It seems to me, she has some shame, internalised hatred, I suspect, she said it! So so sad that she hasn’t analysed it, to change her mindset and maybe she needs some therapy. My hair grows! And it’s natural, and so is my daughter’s. She has becomes accustomed to feeling/thinking negatively about herself and black people in general. We have definitely been encouraged to not have our own hair own, value, embrace and appreciate it. But I recognised that, and my daughter knows how to love herself, naturally, it starts with “self”. However, nutrition, health and how we treat our bodies, age etc, can also be contributory factors as well, to be considered. But long or short, she should definitely embrace who she is. So sad. I love my blackness, including my hair. She needs therapy, given she has recognised it. My mum used to wear wigs, again, she was brainwashed into thinking that it was the only way to feel accepted. However when I began to accept myself, got rid of wigs, weaves etc, she went on her own journey without. If she ever wanted to have it long as a extra mature woman, she might braid it or twist in natural styles. It was beautiful to see her growth🙏🏾

@@ComeMekWiTalk Maxine, you are probably right. There is a lot undoing required with this lady. Some would say she is too far gone. However, this will be dependent on her motivation, whether or not she wants to change. And we all have a responsibility towards our children/grandchildren/family and close friends to share our experiences and appreciate our natural hair and identities, so it is not passed down to the next generation. White, European features, is not the only “standard of beauty”, and we need to challenge this when we see/hear this, as this was enforced, if we go back in time, to make us feel bad about ourselves, and to cover our hair, including the wigs, and straightening of our hair, to be more “acceptable”, to be it is part of their cultural norms in many western societies, means to present in a particular way. In some ways, it is linked to racism/colourism. Thankfully, these outdated ways of thinking, and being is changing in some circles. But it is still an ongoing process to be aware of, and to address it whenever it shows it. Some people, are just blind to what is staring them into the face. We would do better to learn and research about, not only European history, the “accepted history” but to learn about our own histories p, to equip us with these knowledge, understanding and address/review where necessary. Just like in some African cultures, they cut the girls hair short, especially when they start formal schooling. Even this is starting to change. But that’s stories for another day.

Being a man that thinks linear, I have no problem with what she said. She has recognized her position in life, realizing her limitations of how she looks and what makes her feel comfortable. You can say she has a true knowledge of self and not trying to step outside of her lane. Where we may differ is on the definition of the standards of femininity and the psychological effects when you can’t look in the mirror and be comfortable with what you see, it would make it difficult to be in a relationship with a person like that.

I think she's also speaking mainly of 4c hair; without a lot of product & manipulation, time, & effort it's likely not going to look "feminine"... Blk women are the only women who spend hours, almost an entire day, in fact sometimes several days, to get our hair done... ... ...

SMDH.

Thanks so much. The more I move around the more I realise that people see my hair as something special. I have women and men stopping me all the time asking me what I do to make my hair so healthy and long but the truth is I don’t do anything. It actually grows really quickly but I keep it at a certain length where I find it manageable. I just had a cut on Sunday. I do mainly protective styles. I really didn’t realise people feel this way about hair. I love this platform as I am learning a lot everyday. Thank you all so much

You lasted an entire 3 minutes? I had to stop the video at 10 seconds. It was too much for me to listen to. She doesn't love herself yet. That's very hard to listen to and she thinks it has something to do with hair. 😢
