If you're looking for a sporty compact hatch, this isn't it. But if on the other hand you are looking for a Corolla with a bit more visual swagger, the Nightshade is for you.

I've got a 2020 Corolla HB XSE, CVT. After 12K miles I would highly recommend it. The 1st gear plus CVT really transforms the feeling of driving a car with a CVT. I had a 2017 Civic EXL sedan. Nice car overall but the 2.0 liter NA engine and trans in the Corolla HB drives better. And averaging 35.5 mpg since new.

I drove one of these at an auto show. It reminded me of a nostalgic mid-2000s Civic. Fun to drive and no-frills. It’s a great car for 90% of people looking in the compact segment. Yes, there are better options but if you are really wanting to buy a cheap car you aren’t missing out on much with this.

Toyota also found adding a first gear lengthened the life of the CVT - it lasted a lot longer. That was the primary reason why they added it after their first generation CVTs had early failure problems - you can find videos on KZbin of people complaining about those failures. Great review as usual.

I love my blue flame Carolla. It’s a shame the cabin is so noisy, I thought coming from a 2009 Subaru Forester would make any car sound quiet but this thing roars on the highway. I swapped out the tires for nice Perelli‘s and although it helped there just is not enough insulation. I think this car shines on suburban roads while taking corners and holding revs in manual mode. I don’t know what this guy is smoking but the manual mode in the Corolla is very rewarding, fast and dynamic. When you shift up the car literally boosts forward which can help you power through a corner. If you put wide tires on this thing, it would be so much fun.

The 0-60 time is a somewhat surprising to me, a bit quicker than I thought and not far off the Civic turbo numbers that I've seen thus far. I think the this Nightshade edition is ridiculous, little more than a marketing gimmick; adds nothing to performance or aesthetic IMO. It's clear this hatch is meant to provide value and excellent fuel economy, which it does, but I'd like to see Toyota offer a larger engine in this package. I prefer the interior design to that of the new Civic, but only in XSE trim with the sharper, digital cluster and larger touchscreen. The big miss for the new Civic is the need to spend 25K plus, and get the turbo, to get blindspot monitoring. Bizarre marketing choice on AHM's part.

Why would anyone buy a hot sport hatch with a CVT? That's like going to a Denver steakhouse and ordering grilled tilapia.

Too bad toyota ruined such a great car by putting a cvt in it just to save a few bucks. Because how much more would it cost then to put in a 6 speed automatic?
@garrettw99
@garrettw99 3 жыл бұрын
Gas mileage would take a plunge if it had a 6 speed. I would suggest taking the Aisin 8 speed from the Camry and putting it in the Corolla. The Corolla has had a CVT since 2014. But to be honest only car enthusiasts hate CVTs. Most people don’t know the difference. They just want their car to accelerate.

@@DJPleasureSeekingMissle the 6 speed in Mazdas are what hold their cars back. They need at least 2 more gears. Much better than a CVT though.

Bottom line: disregard this entirely and get just about anything else. The civic hatchback absolutely destroys this in every way no ifs ands buts maybes ors The corolla cross is interesting to but still won’t be best in class or as Alex would say “the Honda accord of subcompact crossovers” and that is very unfortunate
