Love seeing this kind of video showing the process of troubleshooting and development. Keep up the good work Tim

You could cut along the tang and bend 90 degrees that way you have plenty material to make the guard

That is what they're called. They're fairly common in knife making, I'm kind of surprised he had never heard of them

I wonder if instead of a full tang, you kept the bolster thick and the handle keyholed into the bolster. And it could mimic the lines on the base of the head on your axes. Love watching your videos! Seeing repeatable parts being made with tooling is just so cool.

A lot of people have done it for many centuries, Tim. It's called an integral guard, and can be in many shapes and varieties from cruciform to D to crazy octopi.

Awesome job Timothy. Can't wait to see more videos soon my friend. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge On. Fab On. Weld On. Keep forge lit. Keep making. God bless.

Proud of you for branching out Tim! I know swords and knives are sort of a stereotype with blacksmiths and you guys do a lot more. I think Alec Steele had the same issue with it at first but now it's his main thing. I do love the axe making, nothing wrong with that, but maybe this will broaden your audience and get you more viewers and sponsors! Can't wait to see how you figure this thing out. This is going to be so cool!

Looks fantastic! A good source to look at for integral stuff is Lin Rhea. Not sure if that’s how you spell it or not. He’s the king of integral knives and does some amazing stuff. Things like bowies with integral guards and a blacksmiths knife style handle.

i was gonna suggest him aswell, if he wants a forged knife an xray bowie would be the way to go

Isn't there a feature in the upsetter (that you don't currently use) that was for some part of the jackhammer bit making that required upsetting along the long axis of the bit? I have a vague memory of you discussing it in one of the restoration videos but because it doesn't make sense to use with the axe process you either didn't get it working or just don't use it currently. Unless I imagined that all it might be perfect to use instead of the flypress for the tang contouring.

Oh no, I have to start saving my pennies! I love my hatchet, and I love Bowie knives. Damn.

Perhaps it's just me, but I'd love to see the curve under the guard with a way bigger radius that mimics the curve where the axe handle enters the head. That with a nice sharp shelf above would look really good I feel.

With the guard as it is, I'm thinking dagger instead of knife! That might be a fun idea!

The handle material looks to be plenty for a full tang. A 6mm thick tang would draw out my best guess from how it looks in the video, you would get 14 cm easy.

*please read* The wording for the knife you're making is a "Bowie Knife with Integral Guard". Knives with integral guards or bolsters are quite common, but I haven't seen anyone trying to mass produce them the way you are. Just to complicated your life a little, I've also seen a Bowie knife with an integral guard and pommel. In this case, you would need to use handle scales instead of a solid wooden handle. Have fun 😊

Clearly an important design consideration for this process is repeatability. Sure, you can cut the guard material out of the tang, but the result will be different each time. Not a problem for pure custom knives, but if you're trying to build roughly identical knives a repeatable process is critical, IMHO.
