Well, I wouldn't say this was the only other time Cobar Commander was portrayed as competent. There was a 2011 animated iteration of G.I. Joe. In that one, he was competent as he was terrifying.

I've been behind in reading, but just caught up on Cobra Commander a few days ago and starting Scarlett this weekend. This series really defined what Energon Universe means....this desperation to secure this amazing power source. I really like this new universe.

Duke is a solid read and the true Cobra Commander can be found in the Larry Hamma comics of the 80's.

I disagree. Although I loved most of Larry Hama's GIJoe run (I think it is a top 10 comic runs of all time) I think you do a disservice to the great Chris Latta. Now, of course the cartoon from the 80s had the censorship of the times. And even Larry Hama occasionally used CC as a joke later in the run. The modern one so far seems to take the best of both the cartoon and the Hama version. I think they can all have their place.

​@@cheeseburger12 The video is clearly pertaining to the Cobra Commander character as he was originally written and in no way shape or form takes away from "The great Chris Latta". Neither I or the commentary of the video ever mention Latta and as far as 80's censorship goes GI Joe was around the same time as Transformers which was far more violent and definitely took it's antagonist seriously and that has absolutely nothing to do with censorship or Latta voicing Starscream and more about executives dictating the tempo without understanding the source material.

@@dirikir.2442 The comic. But the comic came first before the Transformers cartoon, and I don't think anyone thinks of that as the True Megatron. I think more people think of Chris Latta then of the comic version, he probably reached more audiences. Especially since he also did the commercials. It is kind of weird to say the most iconic version isn't the true version.

While there were a few episodes where the Dreads seemed weak, I always saw them as a threat. Remember the double-cross during the Weather Dominator fiasco. They totally beat both the Joes and Cobra to negotiate the highest bidder. During the 80s run, Torch and Ripper were written similarly to BeBop and Rocksteady from the TMNT series. In hindsight, this may have been a marketing technique to sell action figures of less popular toons to kids or at the least, to make the cartoon seem more kid-friendly.

Yeah, I didn't think anyone could top the Hasbro shared universe by IDW, but the Energon Universe is putting up a good effort, at least to start. Josh Williamson has said he's tried to get away from the cowardly heel stereotype of the Eighties cobra commander, and he's done that task well. Cobra commander is still more a man of brain rather than brawn, but he can deliver an ass whipping if called upon to do so

I only have the cobra commander comics, but I have been searching up videos about the energon universe and I gotta say it is the most bad ass thing in all of Transformers G.I. Joe basically any comic I read based on those universes this universe beats them all, especially the cobra commander comics He’s like the Joker if he had an entire army following him

Man I tried to follow it all. I've lived void rivals. But they got so many dang Joe books. I can't afford to do them all. I had to drop the Joe books and I love rivals but it's on chopping block.
