Here's how I feel the pitch meeting for this movie went. I'll be using "EX" to indicate "executives who have never played Minecraft" and "FM" to indicate "filmmakers". FM: "So, Microsoft gave us a bunch of money to make a movie about Minecraft!" EX: "Cool, so you're going to do an animated film?" FM: "Not entirely. We want to do half animated, half live action." EX: "Oh, like the Lego movie, where it cuts back and forth between the game and the players?" FM: "No, more like Space Jam. Or the Jumanji remakes." EX: "That sounds great! So the world will be animated like Minecraft?" FM: "Kind of. We want to add more detail and make it a little less blocky, y'know? So like halfway between traditional CGI and Minecraft." EX: "Good idea. Make sure you get the lighting right; that's how you really sell the immersion in these hybrid styles." FM: "Yep, definitely! We'll have a single spotlight as a backlight on everyone and it'll point the wrong direction half the time depending on how the actors are facing." EX: "Interesting artistic choice! Now, for the writing..." FM: "Oh, there's *tons* of Minecraft lore in the games!" EX: "So you'll be pulling from that?" FM: "Nope, not at all! We're going to make it an isekai. I mentioned Jumanji before, and it really got me wanting to do *that* with this project." EX: "Isekai? Sounds Japanese. Anime is all the rage, kids will love it!" FM: "Oh, definitely! We'll get all our most senior writers, some of whom are pushing 60, to write a script that they think preteens would enjoy!" EX: "This is all sounding very promising, but who are you thinking of casting?" FM: "We have Microsoft money! We can cast anyone! Who better than Jack Black and Jason Momoa?" EX: "Do you think they would even want to work on a Minecraft movie?" FM: "Hell, no! But they'll do it for the money, and that'll be obvious to everyone watching Momoa phone in his performance. But we'll cover it up with edgy writing so he'll just seem intentionally bored instead of actually bored." EX: "We love it! We'll greenlight this immediately!"

I haven't seen the SMB movie, to be fair, and the fans are, honestly, owed nothing, but is it a unique production that gives credence and love to the art that made it so beloved? Or is it an easy, formulaic, cookie cutter attempt to profit off a popular IP to put money into the pockets of the already filthy rich? Even if the end product is bad, if it is a genuine attempt at lovingly portraying a game as a film, it's hard to hate. I just don't think they are. Does every movie have to feature Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jason Momoa, and Dwayne Johnson?

While I'm not too hopeful it's really too early to tell. I think it really comes down to the tone of the film. If it doesn't take itself seriously at all and leans into the surrealism of it then it could definitely work especially with the cast they have. If they try to tell a serious story however it will end up a complete disaster. Regardless it would have definitely worked better animated. It's also important that the internet hive mind doesn't decide its opinion before the film even releases.

Before this trailer came out, I predicted this movie would be either one of two things. Either it would be hot garbage that doesn't understand the source material at all. Or it would be some wildly profound Barbie type of movie. Surprisingly, it looks like it landed somewhere in the middle. I don't think it looks bad at all, despite the narrative a lot of people are trying to push. But it also doesn't look like it has very much to say either. Sorta gives off Mario Movie energy in that way. Either way, I'm into it.

My problem is that it does not look like a ressource pack. It looks like something inspired by Minecraft but none of the buildings could actually be built like that without mods. Nothing. Compared to the Lego or Barbie movie who very much try to stick to the source material. And I think they missed out on a ton of free advertisement of people building what they showed in the trailer ingame. But that's not possible. Just hope when it comes to the content they stick closer to what the game is actually like. Right now I think I would have preferred if they suck closer to the ingame rules for the environment design.

This is my copy paste of my comment I'm putting on KZbinrs who I've watched before to see their & also the other subscribers thoughts. You know what I would have enjoyed actually is do it mostly animated or like the Lego movies. But maybe at some point near the beginning of the movie, just have random other Minecraft people spawn/login or being found somewhere else by Steve in the game with Steve being like "What hell, who the heck are you guys?" Or if they wanted some sort of realistic yet game version mix & even though I'm not sure many would like this, they could do a sort of TOY STORY situation, where it shows us for a first few moments of the beginning people like Jack Black (not as Steve rather that'd be someone else with lots of Minecraft knowledge) logging into the game. Then maybe some friends or family joins as characters, & it shows us a mix of inside the game as well as outside for the portion of the game where the humans are playing it has the characters sound like them, yet afterwards everyone leaves & all the Minecraft entities are shown to be real with their own unique thoughts plus voices as well as personalities. From then on we'd never see the actors controlling the characters nor showing up again or at least very rarely. Thoughts about these ideas anybody, how would you feel if they did a Toy Story type thing in a way?

This looks so bad with real humans in it. Animations looks great tho. Like many comments mention, there should be 100% animated characters. Its actually crazy. It would cost probably the same to animate theese characters and record same actors voices. But it would look 2x better. Who makes the decision at theese huge budget movies.
