Naylorben I felt the same way. Honestly, I still enjoy Bloober Team’s games (though I thought Layers of Fear 1 was “meh”), and (aside from the Raiders of the Lost Ark edit and the patent bullshit), I heavily disagreed with this video and believed he missed the point when it comes to referencing something and doesn’t seem to understand the concept of holding influences or styles up the creator’s sleeves (Layers of Fear 1 was initially a P.T. fangame anyway and Blade Runner didn’t invent the cyberpunk trope, and Observer was like Blade Runner meets Soma and it never tried to copy the story of those two). Also, Layers of Fear 1 was about paintings so there’s a lot of references to paintings, some of which I recognized and even though I’m not an expert on historical paintings, I still knew that not all of the paintings were made specifically by the creators (hell, one of the newspaper clippings talks about the “baby face” painting and never suggested that the main character drew it). I’m sorry that Bobvids is worried about the 5 people who assumed that all of the paintings were created specifically for this game! Layers of Fear 2 was about movies so there’s a lot of movie references, which isn’t a new thing, what makes this game so special!? One of the achievements made it clear that those Se7en references were intentional (the achievement even said Se7en)! It feels like he’s cherry picking specific details while ignoring others (the painter and the daughter didn’t have names either, the looping hallway in Observer was an optional Easter egg that references both P.T. and Layers of Fear, Layers of Fear 1 wasn’t supernatural, it was just hallucinations), and is desperately trying to accuse the developers of plagiarism while not knowing the difference between references and ripoffs and also ignoring other media that do the same thing as Bloober Team’s games. This is very similar to what Adam talked about in his Kimba video when he compared the “Simpsons did it,” argument to the “Lion King ripped off Kimba,” argument.

@@troin3925 Btw Bladerunner may as well be given carte blanche in the "created" cyberpunk, as it was one of the godfathers of the setting and imagery. Ofc there are works that came before but none really popularized it nearly to the level as did Bladerunner. Not to mention the fact that it was a book before it was a movie. Philip K Dick among others can be considered one of the godfathers of cyberpunk as well.

Layers of fear was also not supposed to take place in the Edwardian era. One of the inheritance DLC endings shows the daughter sitting in front of a TV. The house and the furniture therein was just an aesthetic choice tbh. There’s also the painter’s war medals, (and prosthetic) though it’s unclear which war he fought in. But with enough digging around the notes and scenery, it becomes a little more apparent that the game takes place sometime in the twentieth century.

Not to necro this comment or anything but the patent isn't on the "idea of two worlds" (a patent like that would never be granted) but rather on how they implemented it in The Medium by basically running two instances of the game simultaneously rather than relying on the old "shifting" technique or a standard split-screen. Which was neat and all, but also a huge waste of system resources. I see very little reason for other devs to want to implement this technique into their games.

It's funny how Layers of Fear relied so heavily on visuals and surrealistic terrain, and had the narrative reflect the nature of art and artists, as well as how so many artists feel like they can only do good work while in pain, while also having to copy so much without making it work fully in context. I will say though that the walls closing in whenever you turn around, the black swirls of death, and the identical laughing paintings in one of the endings really stuck with me and are something I always have in the back of my mind whenever I work on my own paintings (which are, coincidentally, surrealist horror based on mental illness and the imagery associated with Lovecraftian cosmic horror)

I call games that come out to make up for ones that didn’t “cope games.” But yeah, while I played Layers of Fear before PT and so didn’t catch most of those lifts, I was pretty astonished by the Se7en “homage” in LoF2, especially since that and the rest you pointed out don’t even attempt to make sense or be distinguished in context. I’d disagree about Observer, though; cyberpunk is a broad genre with that aesthetic beyond Blade Runner, and the choice to make it Eastern European-influenced instead of Japanese is genuinely unique in my opinion. Also, I can’t fault Bloober for tipping their hats to a fellow Pole, especially since I’ve seen other Polish artists do the Z.B. style in their work (not that whataboutism makes it necessarily better, though, I suppose).

I’d disagree with many allegations in this video. I wouldn't read too much into it as the author of the video does. The problem is that all of the games are derivatives of other games to a much higher extent than you would think. Some are simply plagiarism. Take for example all of these house flipping simulators. I didn't play these but I saw a few gameplay demos - they're all basically the same. However I can see subtle differences that make one game playable and the other - not so. And that is all that matters - these details. You can make a great game but leave one annoying detail in it. Other developers will use your idea but will eliminate this detail (because they understood that it was causing problems) and it is them, not you, who will succeed. Evolution and natural selection - that's what it is. Comparing Marianne and Anna to each other and suggesting that it is some kind of plagiarism is plain stupid - they could have selected any actress for the role of Marianne. But they picked the one we can see in the video, so what? This leads to conclusion that it's plagiarism? Strange, at least. What's next? When we see that a game is an FPS shall we conclude that it's derived from Doom, or better yet Wolfenstein 3D? An additional problem with horrors is that the creators have a very limited number of creative means at their disposal. Basically, when you hear horror what do you think of? It's got to be dark, there has to blood and nightmares and so on... but it's very hard to think of something completely new... what, a scary fog or a scary angel? Who would be scared of fog and who would take seriously a scary angel? All the known scary things are so imprinted in the players minds that it's difficult to think of something else that would not be immediately funny or stupid. If it was imprinted in a movie or another game earlier - that's even better. PS. I don't particularly like horrors, I don't like to be scared.
@darthvaderreviews6926
@darthvaderreviews6926 3 жыл бұрын
@@szlagtrafi9115 Steven King wrote an entire book about the concept of scary fog ("The Mist" IIRC) and while the Weeping Angel is not a 1:1 angel concept it became an extremely iconic and viral idea in horror. Of course debunking your two examples doesn't prove that innovation in horror is possible, so I would point to, well, relatively recent releases that have gone viral like Amnesia or Five Nights & Freddy's that, while not 100% original (nothing is and nothing has to be) did present their own unique experiences that inspired others. I'm not sure where "Marianne" and "Anna" have come from here, maybe it's a localisation difference? Are you talking about P.T's "Lisa" and Layers of Fear's "The Wife"? Regardless picking the same actor is of course not grounds for plagarism (and certainly not legally, this video never argues Bloober Team did anything _legally_ wrong) but there's a *LOT* more similarities this video points out. Your point about improvement is moot as I don't see any area where Bloober improved upon previous products except in cases like P.T. where they took advantage of the product not existing anymore. If The Wife hadn't ripped Lisa's kill animation and the "don't look behind you" idea this video would've probably never been made as the P.T inspiration wouldn't be feeling like it was TOO heavily copying the exact same format as P.T. It's not just one thing being picked out here, it's a consistent pattern. I think Bloober have gotten better over time and I sincerely hope they move on to more original works in future (after all the referencefest that was LoF2 flopped hard) but them patenting the two worlds thing is a HUGE red flag.

You're probably asking yourself why they gave this "team" of copycats the job of remaking one of the most influential games of all time instead of someone that has repeatedly proven that's quite capable to remake games decently like Bluepoint I presume. Well, as it turns out Bluepoint remastered the metal gear games on PS3, problem is that it ended up costing too much so when it came to remaster the silent hill games they went with Hijinx studio, safe to say it was a disaster for a variety of reasons. They never cared for the franchise, they never cared for the fans, stop trusting Konami, and don't trust these posers at Bloober team.

Just thought I’d say that given the cover art caught my eye at 0:30.

Great video as usual! I do like the general pivot towards more interesting video essay-y stuff, and the look towards smaller AA indie games really is neat! the editing is stylish as all give but I do think it gets a bit bogged down in a different sort of microsope. I think in trying to make the jump from bloober team's 2006 to 2012 (ish) work you kind of bury the lede here in trying to make that connection, especially after these people arae making the jump from ios shovelware to notabli9ish) indie games with a partial vision behind them! I feel like it's right there that you sort of bury the lede that this is(!) a smallish indie studio and that maybe their work deserves at least some added consideration considering the general ramping up of ideas and stakes. while you did a good job of setting up the point that good work borrows heavily from the visions and are deeply inspired by other work, once you set that up the whole question really becomes whether or not they succeed on their own merit, and I didn't really get the sense that that was properly show in the latter half of the video. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this and mayvbe hear you go on about your thoughts on the observer , and how layers of fear fails at the whole thing it's trying to do.
