BMW E39 Drive Shaft & Differential Service

I had been hearing a strange noise since I bought this E39 M5 that ultimately led to servicing the drive shaft and differential. Replaced all seals and gaskets on the differential. Replaced CV joint and center support bearing on the drive shaft.

Thanks for the video. I had the same exact noise on my 2002 M5... I replaced everything on my car, wheel bearings, transmission, clutch, coil overs, bushings, everything accept that part.. lol. I ended up doing a T56 magnum swap with a custom drive shaft and it mysteriously went away. Your video solved the mystery for me. Thank you!

Great video, I bought a high mileage 2002 M5 as a project and I fixed tons of issues on the car to include the same leak you had on the differential. Now I have the squeak along with a clicking sound under load. After seeing your video I’m gonna swap the carrier bearing, thanks.

Glad the video helped. The clicking sound could be the CV joint I show on the video. Definitely worth replacing the CSB if you are touching the drive shaft for anything. Good luck!

Good point, I’ll replace both of them. I’m mad at myself for not doing everything when I had it all apart doing the deferential seal.

I also have this noise. I replaced the diff seal and then the flange. I replaced the flange after seeing grease on the heat shield and noticing the rubber was cracked on the flange. I only noticed the same noise you had after all this work. It may have been there before. Next I will replace the center support bearing and see if it goes away. I suspect it is the center support bearing.

Great video, I have a 2003 M5 that i purchased in March 2020 with 164k miles. While riding passenger with the previous driver I wasnt hearing it. Then about 3 months later I heard that same sound but only very lightly. So i replaced the rear driveshaft cv joint and the sound still seemed to be there, my center support bearing looked fine so I didn’t replace it. I always wondered if it is my center support bearing thanks for the video!

Me too brother i am having this same issues on my 1990 535i AC Schnitzer when I step on the gas around 40 or 50 km i hear a vibration right in the middle of the seats,so i decide to replace the flex disc and the support center and see what happen. you spend $1900 i hope mine will be less...lol

I hear you. Flex disc and CSB shouldnt be that bad and you dont have to deal with the M-tax on parts. Half the cost on mine was the CV joint that you may not need to touch. Good luck!
