If you understand Porsche know this. This is the first attempt at the new Cayman engine, they will get it right in time. You see. Evolution to perfection is the Porsche way. But for now, i would have the BMW.

as someone who recently bought a 718 (non-S though), I can tell you that on real roads 718 is faster and more fun to drive (even the non-S). The M2 has a firmer suspension (maybe unexpectedly) and you can feel that 140kg or so weight difference. Whereas the M2 jumps around on bumpy roads and you keep fighting for the balance of the car, the 718 stays absolutely planted on the road even when the road surface isn't that great. As a result, you have more confidence, and you end up having much more fun than you would in the M2. Sadly, when I was ordering my 718, the TT RS wasn't yet around, I would be happy to test drive that as well to see how it compares, I think it might be a good balance between the two. But from my perspective of an actual customer, 718 is the car to go if you don't need the rear seats and if you want to have the most fun and fast car on actual UK roads

Disagree. I had a 2014 Cayman and it has short travel harsh suspension, tons of interior noise, cramped interior and a rough ride. I'd never road trip in that car. It also felt a bit hollow and cheap somehow, perhaps the lighter weight? My 2016 M2 rides better, slightly quieter, has so much more torque but is also no long distance cruiser either. Honestly, both are very entertaining and put a huge smile on my face, the Porsche mostly for the music of the flat-6 at max rpm, which was heavenly. However, I'd say I personally like the M2 far better than I did my Cayman. It just seems to have a bit more personality, is a bit more practical, and muscular. Now, if we bring my 2014 911 manual into the equation, it gets harder still to decide. That car, again with a beautiful sounding flat-6 and incredible dynamics (once you get accustomed to the rear weight bias), had more personality than either of these two, for me. But its PRICEY. Also, drove an M4 and C7 GS. The M4 was surprisingly dull for me while the C7 GS shocked me with how entertaining it was, despite its horrific, plasticky interior. Still, cost & all considerations, the M2 is my favorite to date.

A lot of these comments seem to be ignoring the elephant in the room... that 718 is £25,000 more expensive than the m2. £25,000!!! Sorry, that is just ridiculous from a fun per pound perspective. M2 wins this hands down for that reason.

Not to mention the price difference in subsequent trips to the dealership for maintenance and whatnot. Those carbon rotors are going to be fun on the wallet to replace. But congrats to both for making wonderful little cars. Preferring one doesn't mean the other is bad.

You can tell that Porsche 718 Cayman S was very highly spec'ed. I'm not sure why the reviewer mentioned that it is 25k more when clearly at 0:33 the price diff is really 21k. If you take out the Carbon-back seats and the Carbon-Ceramic brakes it will be more than 10k savings. If you take out the Sports Chrono package and those ugly wheels that would be another 5k. That brings you to about a $6k diff from the BMW, without losing any necessary options.

In considering a new car I was thinking about the 718 Cayman S or BMW M2 so this video is helpful. The M2 for me looks a little boring and despite being cheaper to buy cash is no cheaper monthly, perhaps due to lacking residual values compared to a Porsche. I've driven the Cayman S twice now, one with a sales person and again on my own and I have to say it definitely is a lot of fun as I'm sure the M2 is. What I loved was also just how easy it was to use as a normal car, it was effortless to drive and didn't feel like a sports car just cruising along, BUT when you switch to Sport or Sport + mode and put your foot down it comes alive! Although I have pretty much decided on a 718 Cayman S I would still like to drive an M2 to see how it drives.

Great review Golf Clubsport S vs 718 vs TTRS vs M2 vs A45 vs Alfa Quad? (Might be a bit unfair as 3 of the cars would belong to the same umbrella and the fabulous A45 is also due for replacement). Add the Honda Integra Type R old school brilliance into the mix...

It always annoys me when reviewers talk about huge price differences without mentioning the cost of all the unnecessary options on a typical Porsche test car. Anyone spending nearly $8000 usd on carbon ceramic brakes, and they're not on track daily, has more money than brains, not to mention all the cosmetic bits with absurd stratospheric prices.

The thing I never got about the 718 was that it lacks the two advantages that small, turbocharged cars are supposed to have. It's heavier than the 981 cayman S, and gets the exact same gas mileage. What's the point.
@paulwood8624 жыл бұрын
It’s a second quicker to 60, better handling, steering and braking than 981. It has more usable power (from 1900 rpm) and a subjective one, looks better. Quicker round Nurburgring than a base 911 - not sure how many more reasons you need but I could keep going

+LegendInThaMakin Just like a Cayman S is a high end Porsche vs the Cayman? Have you driven a 911 and a Boxster/Cayman? People who have driven both have more fun in the "low-end Porsche". The 911 Carrera/S have very much become a Grand Touring car. If you get a chance, go test drive a Cayman. It might make you want to trade in your BMW for one.

The 718 Caymans PDK with lowered chassis, 20" wheels, all the "Sport" gear, is the way to go. Car & Driver magazine ran a 3.6 second 0-60 mph with it, and Automobile Magazine hit 186 mph/299 KPH on the Autobahn. M2--really? The car beat the M2, M3, and the M4 on Magny Cours GP Track. Times? 1'59":80 for the M3 with competition pack, 2'01"10 for the Porsche 911 Carrera S, 2'01"20 for the Jaguar F Type SVR; 2'02"20 for the Mercedes C 63 S, 2'03"20 for the BMW M2, forget the M4--way down the list. The 718 Cayman S PDK: 1'59"70. The number of cylinder and engine displacement no longer are indicators of top performance. Porsche has created a supercar for $100,000 US which is stunning. Sound? It kind of like listening to the new album for your favorite band and getting accustomed to the new music...and music it is coming from the new Porsche. It's sound is sharp, aggressive and unapologetic. The torque is amazing, and power and incredible handling trump just about everything else. Should you buy it? Oh yeah. Hold on!

Porsche had better pull their finger out. All this green bollocks and downsizing engines is history. Trump's in power, the EU is dying and that's a double whammy to all this co2 reduction pressure on car companies. There's no way a 718 will sell in the US if Trump's going to levy a tax on foreign cars, the 718 will be even MORE expensive, and sorry, it's just not going to be able to compete with all those lovely V8 engines that are so commonplace in the US, not to mention Trump's energy independence initiative.
