Hydraulic lifters work via oil pressure. A little bleed down after a long period is fine.

Would it be better to get fresh oil into the new lifters (and removing air) before installing them, by depressing the head and releasing while submerged? Just wondering if that would help get them to function with more rigidity on the first start after install.

That might help! I did not seem to have any issues with my car on start up. Its not a bad idea to get some fresh oil in there before though.

DirtyKurty thanks man! Btw did you have any stuck lifters? One of my 12 lifters on the exhaust side is totally jammed in the bore hole. It must be the worst one causing the tick. I have tried nearly everything to get it loose but no luck so far and it’s very hard to grab on to. The lifter head has pulled off from my removal attempts and I have only the stem still in bore with a small amount of rim above to grab with pliers. Used lots of penetrant and given it many days to loosen. Won’t budge so far. Any ideas?

Maybe there is dirt or metal shaving in the bore with the lifter. None of mine stuck they popped right in and out. Maybe try using an air gun and spraying the oil passage holes to maybe clean whatever holding them up.. try spinning it.. if your replacing it anyway maybe gently use a small slide hammer..

Awesome videos I have 2010 n54 I have question big problem on my hands peace charge pipe about 8 months ago went into Cylinder 6 intake valve finally figured out why I was misfiring up at 6000 RPMs I got the peace out but now the intake valve Cylinder 6 is stuck closed any solutions other than doing a valve job thank you
@dirtykurty92

So just one valve will not open? When you turn the engine over do all the other valves open? Maybe you wiped out a cam lobe or lost a rocker arm or broke a lifter. Pull your valve cover off and inspect the valve train to make sure there isn’t something broken or missing
@dvatch0339

I did crank the engine that one valve Cylinder 6 is stuck I was thinking same thing my next step is to pull the valve cover off before I send the car out to the shop this is a little over my head..I'll do everything outside the motor but go inside not easy when you're working out in apartment parking lot smh....

Does it rotate past cylinder 6 or does it get stuck when you get to it?

@@dirtykurty92 all other intake valves rotate except for Cylinder 6 it just stuck closed doesn't move at all I did change the valve cover a couple months ago I didn't notice anything but at the time I did not know I had a stuck valve crazy how this car still running pulls pretty good except for the misfire up at 6350 Cylinder 6 I was getting a lean code seemed gone away when I change the valve cover car just passed inspection yesterday damn thing needs a lot of work needs turbos front ones pissing oil all over the place and the infamous wastegate rattle on rear Turbo I put a lot of time and money in this car within the last year or so ......I don't want to get rid of it

@@dvatch0339 yea they definitely are costly cars! sounds like the intake cam lob might be rounded off, or there is a issue with the rockers or you have a collapse lifter. Id for sure pull the valve cover to inspect. I have a few other videos on how to pull your cams and retime your engine, you can save yourself a few dollars doing the job yourself with just a few special bmw tools! All depends what your confident in doing, if not its going to cost a pretty penny for sure to diagnose and repair that one!

Hi, I've got the N52 motor, 2.5 litre petrol. On cylinder 5, I found that the rocker had been knocked off and was lying in the cylinder head along with the other part that is held by the large spring. Watching your video, No 5 lifter is solid. I thought perhaps it shouldn't be so solid and perhaps some slight play was OK. Also do I have to remove the inlet side camshaft to remove the lifter. Thanks, trying to figure out what's happened, I'm an amateur mechanic.

Ahh doesn’t sounds like a fun situation, I do believe you’ll have to remove the cam shaft to remove the lifters

@dirtykurty92 Hi, yes I think your right, I'm also thinking I have a stuck valve. That's why I can lift the rocker of the valve, it's stuck down slightly possibly. One question if I may, my lifter is solid, absolutely no play whatsoever and I can't compress it at all. Is that normal or is it seized? Than you, Best regards from Scotland 🇬🇧
@dirtykurty92
@dirtykurty92 Жыл бұрын
I would say your lifter is most likely ok, but I’d replace it if just in case if your taking it all apart. They are solid when you get them brand new. Maybe worth doing a leak down test on cylinder 5 to make sure your valve is not bent as well
@Ian-ij4of
@Ian-ij4of Жыл бұрын
@dirtykurty92 seems like I may have a bent intake valve, didn't see any damage on the piston crown when I borrowed a bore scope camera, couldn't look up at the valves though, only had a forward facing camera. I think I'll remove the intake manifold and go from there. I should really scrap it, but it's just a great car to drive and no rust. 6 speed manual too...I'm gutted....not my main car but a couple of weeks ago I had new Michelin Pilot sport 4 tyres fitted, earlier this year I fitted new Monroe shock absorbers and new Brembo brakes all round, changed the gearbox oil, and the diff, full engine service and did a re gas on the AC...Local shop here quoted a minimum of 2500 uk pounds, about 3000 usd and thats just for a repair, not a rebuild of the cylinder head...crazy huh 😀...I'm probably more crazy trying to fix it..haha...

@@Ian-ij4of set aside time to work on it, it doesn’t take to many special tools, a few things for timing, basic hand tools. You can replace a bunch of “well you are in there parts” and have a good car for a long time!

Did you notice any idle or performance issues with bad lifters? Supposedly the valves with loose lifters do not fully open so wonder how the symptoms present apart from the lifter noise

Hello sir, Should we have to soft lifter when we remove camshaft ? or is there no need to soft new lifter?.
@dirtykurty92
@dirtykurty92 3 жыл бұрын
I do believe the lifts should not be soft. if the vehicle has been ran recently and hasnt been sitting for a long time the lifts should be hard still. If they are soft right after taking the cam out to me would be a sign that lifter is starting to or has failed
