As a big Honda DCT fan (Africa Twin) I always wondered why nobody else is offering an alternative. Finally the market is catching up and many "this is not riding a motorbike" haters will be shifting automated too ;-) . As long as I can run it on a manual mode, I never understood the critics on their quickshifters. I look forward to seeing the development of these systems. Thanks for the review. I want to give it a try myself.

I was a rider until the age of 69 when I lost my left leg due to diabetes. That was devastating knowing I will never ride a motorcycle again due to the fact that without a left articulating ankle I can’t shift. I've done heaps of miles with a Honda NM4 (yes) with a fairly early version of DCT - from Estonia to Nordkapp, Alps and most recently Romania. It allows me to focus on the scenery, the twisties, the traffic in large foreign towns, etc.. I recently sold it and picked up an R1250RS and to be fair.. once they release a R1300RS with this version, I'm probably switching to it. I don't really miss shifting gears to be honest. But I also do enjoy it at times (though, all automatics allow an override anyway).

It's not really clear to me, you want to sell the GS and keep the RT, and now you say whether I should exchange the GS for the GS ASA, explain it to us a bit 😉

@@TommyStarwindnot really, it just adjusts to your aggressiveness level. If u accelerate fast and break hard it'll adjust to that in few minutes and will hold gears longer. Nothing to do with prediction. At least on my AT

@@Angry-Lynx that the 2024 update to DCT w/ the AT? I heard the new one is pretty solid. And this sounds like it.

It is just an automated manual gearbox which is old technology in semi trucks for years already. My 2012 Iveco Stralis 480 worked the same. This tech only seems to be making its way now into smaller vehicles. DCT on the other hand is effectively two three speed gearboxes, each with its own clutch hence the extra weight and split second shifting speeds. An AM will never be as smooth as a DCT, it is just not possible. So two helmets will always be knocking

My understanding is the Africa Twin has 105 Nm of torque and the GS has 110 Nm. I ride AT so I know what that feels like, but does the GS deliver its torque so differently?

^ what he said. That's almost 50% more torque, with mostly the same weight

The base AT = 231 then add DCT = 242kg The Base GS = 237 then add ASA = 239.1kg Add Electronic Suspension to the AT = 233kg (cause GS does not come without ES) It's just a numbers thing, my brain automatically goes there...sorry. (it drives my wife crazy) So if you equip both bikes the same and then add Automatic Clutch, the GS is always lighter and lower center of gravity.

I believe the ASA will be a transition / intermediate solution to fully automated gearbox demand of gs fans, like hybrid cars... It won't last long, like Honda's dct. Bmw will replace it soon with its own new dual clutch fully automated system. Just my prediction...

Yea, it still has a rear brake, switch to Enduro mode, turn off rear ABS and you can lock up the rear all the time or twist the throttle and spin donuts.

I am to old (65) for this stuff. To me, riding a motorcycle contributes to the prevention of dementia. With an automated gearshift, an important part of the exercise of motor skills that riding a motorcycle requires is missing.

Not a big thing but, with DCT, can’t break the shift lever and there’s no way to mistakenly foot shift while standing on the pegs bouncing through the bouncy stuff.

But they haven’t included finger paddles so those of us who can’t use a gear lever can’t override gear changes in auto or ride the bike in manual mode.
