No hook, no chorus, just amazing lyrics. A true poet

The chorus is musical Tex, not lyrical. I agree though. Can’t wait to perform it in June. Took me three weeks to memorise the lyrics.

With the first line in this song Mr.Dylan painted a picture in my mind that has stayed with me for forty years. This is what made him the greatest lyricist ever.

As a fresh-faced 15 year old kid in 1965 saw Bob Dylan in concert in Brisbane Australia. First half was Bob on stage acoustically doing all his folk ..Blowing in the Wind etc..Brilliant..Second half Bob opened with Like a Rolling Stone and did the Highway 61 album plus others..I think the backing band were The Band..not sure..I knew that night I witnessed something so special..a Genius..listen to Bob every day..Thank Robert Zimmerman

I can't even describe how this song makes me feel. Every emotion all at once, forced to the top of a psychotic reflection of a time that once was, and a future that could be. Every character if my life that's ever danced with me in quantum entanglement of reality and fiction. Notes from the audible music scale but lessons from the almighty creator himself. ...Cascading down through time and making a permeant mark on history like the footprints of forgotten souls in the of cement the eternal. Best song ever written period.

Yes who thought desolation row an epic journey to the smoke rings of one's mind could be revitalised to produce a compelling rendition that holds you captive throughout it's entirety!? Only Dylan who in recent concerts was performing the most brilliant portrayal of"when I paint my masterpiece" in the world at the time! I suppose it's his song but I was absolutely stunned and very impressed by his ability to build up the tension until it burst forth into a stunning climax! Just fabulous Dylan it's hard to believe you're an octogenarian and could you possibly stay around for another 80 years because I just can't think of a replacement and another artist that suits the title of the world's greatest since Picasso! Boy is the earth in trouble when the encyclopedic mind of Dylan shuffles onto the next world what a gap will be LEFT seemingly unfilled it seems!

@@IHateThisHandleSystem uh, *unplugged* was about music. MTV was not. Everyone was complaining about MTV then and even before just as you are now. Obviouly if you were young during this particular era of it, it'll be your thing, but I cam assure you it was always anti-music. It's just that it used to feature some music and basically ruined everything.

They're selling postcards of the hanging, they're painting the passports brown The beauty parlor is filled with sailors, the circus is in town Here comes the blind commissioner, they've got him in a trance One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker, the other is in his pants And the riot squad they're restless, they need somewhere to go As Lady and I look out tonight, from Desolation Row Cinderella, she seems so easy, "It takes one to know one, " she smiles And puts her hands in her back pockets Bette Davis style And in comes Romeo, he's moaning. "You Belong to Me I Believe" And someone says, "You're in the wrong place, my friend, you'd better leave" And the only sound that's left after the ambulances go Is Cinderella sweeping up on Desolation Row Now the moon is almost hidden, the stars are beginning to hide The fortune telling lady has even taken all her things inside All except for Cain and Abel and the hunchback of Notre Dame Everybody is making love or else expecting rain And the Good Samaritan, he's dressing, he's getting ready for the show He's going to the carnival tonight on Desolation Row Ophelia, she's 'neath the window for her I feel so afraid On her twenty-second birthday she already is an old maid To her, death is quite romantic she wears an iron vest Her profession's her religion, her sin is her lifelessness And though her eyes are fixed upon Noah's great rainbow She spends her time peeking into Desolation Row Einstein, disguised as Robin Hood with his memories in a trunk Passed this way an hour ago with his friend, a jealous monk Now he looked so immaculately frightful as he bummed a cigarette And he when off sniffing drainpipes and reciting the alphabet You would not think to look at him, but he was famous long ago For playing the electric violin on Desolation Row Dr. Filth, he keeps his world inside of a leather cup But all his sexless patients, they're trying to blow it up Now his nurse, some local loser, she's in charge of the cyanide hole And she also keeps the cards that read, "Have Mercy on His Soul" They all play on the penny whistles, you can hear them blow If you lean your head out far enough from Desolation Row Across the street they've nailed the curtains, they're getting ready for the feast The Phantom of the Opera in a perfect image of a priest They are spoon feeding Casanova to get him to feel more assured Then they'll kill him with self-confidence after poisoning him with words And the Phantom's shouting to skinny girls, "Get outta here if you don't know" Casanova is just being punished for going to Desolation Row" At midnight all the agents and the superhuman crew Come out and round up everyone that knows more than they do Then they bring them to the factory where the heart-attack machine Is strapped across their shoulders and then the kerosene Is brought down from the castles by insurance men who go Check to see that nobody is escaping to Desolation Row Praise be to Nero's Neptune, the Titanic sails at dawn Everybody's shouting, "Which side are you on?!" And Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot fighting in the captain's tower While calypso singers laugh at them and fishermen hold flowers Between the windows of the sea where lovely mermaids flow And nobody has to think too much about Desolation Row Yes, I received your letter yesterday, about the time the doorknob broke When you asked me how I was doing, was that some kind of joke All these people that you mention, yes, I know them, they're quite lame I had to rearrange their faces and give them all another name Right now, I can't read too good, don't send me no more letters no Not unless you mail them from Desolation Row Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Bob Dylan

My father had also since 1948 bin working for the Constitution and also in the 40s had opened a petrol station with his buddy Charlie. It’s still there today. Still called the ⭐️ garage. Wish we owned it now and I wouldn’t have to look for work. And he also did something quite beautiful for his then unborn children. On 3/4/57 he bought 20 pounds of premium bonds. That was a lot of money then. I wracked my brains trying to figure out how these bonds, left in an envelope in his snooker room to be opened after he died, how did he get this money. Ok so he was doing three jobs but why in his married life did he not have to call upon them. Then I remembered. In 57 he won 100 pounds in a prestigious snooker or billiards competition as overall winner. The Jackie Rea Cup maybe or something else in NI. He must’ve put 20 away for the rainy day that never came. And now his five children have 4 pounds each. I’ll buy him some flowers, maybe some wild shamrock ☘️ for his grave. He also won a now very valuable snooker cue. Think it’s called a Burwat cue. Don’t think they make them anymore. From 57. My younger brother nicked that out of the house when he put him in care over five years ago. When he was in hospital with a broken hip. I played Lady Lazarus and got him back on his feet against the advice of the physios. It was easy. I just told him the nurses were having a party and did he want to go and sorry but I couldn’t push him in that big chair and would he ever just stand up and use the feckin Zimmerman frame. He got up all smiles. Never drank in his life but couldn’t stay away from parties and people and women… and of course reader, he married a nurse. And he didn’t have to go off to foreign lands to find her like his brothers did. He found her in his English class at the local tech when he was 15 years old and she 14. He recorded his account of their first date in the town hall in 47. She was wearing a beautiful white blouse and a dark green skirt and he went there early as he didn’t want her to arrive first and not know anyone (she wasn’t a townie but a country girl). I then found a photo he took of her that night. On a country lane standing by his car (the one he needed to open a garage for to keep in petrol). He obviously drove her home. It’s the youngest picture I have of her.

Just realised I have Grimms’ Fairy Tales with me. Seriously. Must go and have a read. Might send me back to sleep. Had two hot whiskies and found my lighter. Realise the witch Maggie must’ve taken some lovely organic pomegranate juice I was given on my birthday by a lovely guy Karl who was moving onto the farm the day after I left. God help Karl is all I can say. The only other thing I got were some very beautiful spring flowers from Maggie herself but I gave those to Louise at the first hotel. Nice woman. No nonsense, kind, caring, just like the young guy working there who bought me tobacco when I couldn’t find my own and wouldn’t accept any money for it. The world seems split between the very good and the very evil with little in between.

Didn’t end up in Birmingham til 2002. Seems to keep missing Bob by about five - seven years. Do think though I was in Athens with my best friend in the summer of 89. That might be when Bob n Van were singing Irish Rover and Bob seemed to Van’s frustration not to know the words. Would’ve had some great oul nights out drinking Retsina and eating Greek salads and calamari if we had’ve bumped into Bob n Van near the Acropolis or Piraeus. As it was I went to Samos on a 15 hour boat journey and read War and Peace there to avoid the tension brewing all day every day between my friend and her shite English drunken bf Bob. I got landed with having to share a room with her equally awful brother Spike, an injured ex fireman who kept waking me up and offering me Ouzo at 9 in the morning. Which of course I declined.

Eat yer heart out James Joyce. Streams of consciousness. I’m writing my autobiography it’s just that it’s scattered in the wild wind, or in so many places, not sure anyone could make it whole again. It’s not chronological of course. Like my hero BD. Just chronicles. My dad wrote for a paper called the Northern Constitution and its sister paper was The Coleraine Chronicle. Constitution now gone. Think Chronicle remains. I bet you’ve forgotten all the best things she said. I’ve no idea why I kept spelling Jameson’s which I got the night porter girl to get from my car, as Jamieson’s for days. My father worked in his father’s linen shirt factory it was James x and Son. Even though there were three other sons. But they were gone to England for work and to find wives and the youngest, my father stayed at home. Worked there with James til 57 when the factory closed and James retired. By then I suppose the NI linen trade was over, as other fabrics had taken over.

And then there’s Isis. And like my impossible to reconstitute autobiography. Am sure that in some version of the myth of Isis that Isis’ lover is shattered into so many pieces and she travels round the world trying to piece him back together but the only part she cannot find is the well, you know. Tragic really. Because as Beatrice might’ve said, what’s the bleedin point of a man if he doesn’t have one of those?

Still awful sick. Gonna try to get emergency doctor tomorrow. As away from home. Could do with more blankets too here. I need the weight on top of me. I’ll ask cool hand Luke tomorrow for more. In Much Ado About Nothing, Beatrice and her friend whose name escapes me, Hera? Fuck dunno, anyways, have some kind of joke about sleeping with a guy and one of them, probably witty Beatrice, says something comparing blankets to a man. That whoever, Hera maybe, needed more blankets so as to feel heavy for the weight of a man. I’d add further, I’d want the warmth of a man. Yeah the warmth at this precise moment might be more important than the well you know. Anyways, just called reception and said I was sick and cold so they’re going to bring me a man. No. Some blankets. Where’s mr fraud when you need him. Siggy is probably off playing guitar. Btw. Bob. Dylan. This version is very addictive. Thankin u kindly, Sir. X

Bought Maggie an acer tree for her 50th. She’s 65 in June. The tree is gorgeous. I told her I fuckin wanted to cut down the tree except I wasn’t going to kill a tree. I also left the rugby blasting from a TV upstairs and she hates rugby and would have to get off her lazy ass and go up and turn it off if she didn’t want to hear wales playing Italy really fucking loud. I’ve been giving away cake and biscuits ever since cos I’m in a hotel. Told her she could keep the roast potatoes and she could give my fancy sausages to Gilbert the 🐖 pig. But the best thing was I found the garnet ring my dad bought me in Cookstown when I was 21. That’s all I really needed. If I hadn’t found that I might’ve gone insane.

I always thought I was Cinderella. Not due to this song btw. But the fairytale. I thought I was Rapunzel too. And sometimes the sleeping beauty. And sometimes the beauty with the beast. Oh and princess and the pea. And Gretel. And little red riding hood. But Cinders because I had too very fuckin lazy spoiled sisters and my Ma and da expected me to do everything in the house. The girls’ jobs and the boys’ jobs too. The boys did nothing either. To help my mother cos she worked long hard hours as a nurse. Night shifts usually. So I ran the house and the others hated me for it but they still wouldn’t do anything. I hated them cos they did nothing. They complained about the food I made when my mum was at work. And when I said well you make dinner tomorrow, they somehow never did. But I didn’t get as far as thinking I’d be rescued by anyone. Just thought I’d rescue myself by leaving home, not live with anyone as that only meant for me some kind of slavery or servitude and has a lifelong fear of cooking for people because I always thought they’d criticise me, which they never did.

Ah here goes. The inimitable Kenny Rogers who for reasons I shall never understand paid money to disfigure himself. Hilarious that ole line about that crazy Asian war. Maybe any Americans listening could take heed and stay out of the current ole crazy European/Asian war. Biden with his motionless botoxed visage and brain, par example. What a guilt trip of a song. Had I been Ruby, I’d have taken my life to the town, the mines, the hills, the skies, etc. Especially with that ole gun threat hangin over my head.
