Funny you ask about layouts. I just got a hustle au and did a short pin layout for the first time and I love it.

As I've gotten older my ball speed has dropped some. My track tends to be low, but I've been working on getting it higher. A longer pin to PAP distance seems to help me get the ball into a roll at a better place with regard to the pocket and using a little higher VAL angle seems to make the ball easier to control. Been using Storm's VLS spreadsheet to check their recommendations before doing anything else. My local pro shop owner is great to work with. Interesting video. This has always been my counter argument to people who complain about the no balance hole rule. I’ve never actually seen a comparison of someone throwing the triangle grip from each possible orientation, though.

I've seen the triangle layout a few times. They can be really useful here where bowling balls cost years of work and are not very accessible at all. The only reason I don't use it is because the USBC rules apply in higher-level competition here too and also I wouldn't be able to use pitches. (I normally use 1 inch reverse).

Since changing my ProShop/Trainer i play with the same layout for 2 years now. Feels good to me since i only have to change ball speccs if needed and not worry about a whole different look on the lanes. I guess it only works for me since i like to play the lane the same way as often as i can since my b-game has a lot less carry than my a-game.

It's one of the primary reasons USBC outlawed weight holes to start with. That and 2 handers / palmers using a weight hole plus a "thumb hole" (they could never put a thumb in) to influence ball roll

Depends on the ball for me. I've got 4 balls with 4 different layouts. I've got an early roll layout on a Results solid, a versatile layout on a Conspiracy Theory, a really bad short pin layout on a hammer anger, and a skid flip layout on a counter attack pearl. I'd probably reuse the versatile layout more than the others

In terms of layouts I use, I have probably 4 or 5 go to layouts. The process of picking which one to use starts with figuring out what the ball's natural motion is. Next, I figure where it will fall in my arsenal. If it is close to a ball I already have, I do some research to see how they're the same and how they differ. For example, the Nirvana and Pitbull are both low RG, high diff asym solids, but have different cover formulations and surface finishes. I use that information to determine if I want the new ball to compliment or replace the one I already have. If it's a replacement, I'll usually stick a similar or identical layout on it. Otherwise, I'll go with something that gives me a different shape so I can stay in the same type of ball if I want while still getting a different look. If I don't have a comparable ball, I'll usually put a layout that accentuates its natural characteristics at first. If I don't like it, I'll go the other way with it. Rarely, I'll buy a ball with the intent of putting a specific layout on it. For example, I recently picked up a Vintage Inferno and put a short pin layout on it to go with the short pin solid I like to use. There's a house I bowl in that's really wet/dry, and most of my equipment just won't roll consistently. I've found my short pin solid is great for a couple games before it starts going flat. So, I went and got a pearl that will give me a bit more angle to carry the corners late in league or tournament blocks.

The answer is no unfortunately. As per USBC rules chapter 8 section 7 a, you may have up to 5 gripping holes, one for each finger/thumb. Each gripping hole must be used on each delivery. This includes holes using removable devices (Switch grips, VISE thumbs, etc) To take this a bit further, if you're a two hander or no thumber and you only have 2 gripping holes you are not allowed to "flip" the layout (A pinup ball and flipping it and using it as pin down). You are supposed to have a scribed or engraved "cross" (+) near the center of the palm to indicate the layout and grip orientation, and your palm needs to cover it on each delivery. Hope this helps!

Most of my equipment is either pin-up or pin-down, however, I don't know the exact numbers for the layouts. The next ball I'm getting, which is a Brunswick Prism Solid, I'm going to have a Rico layout. Never had a ball like that, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it works.

Usually, use 60x4x20, or one that places the pin under my bridge. Try to keep the first for bigger assym stuff/some bigger core syms/some lower diff balls. Generally place the pin under my bridge one weaker assym/lower diff syms. Web Tour with the pin under my bridge is still nasty.

If I change layouts, it's because of what the purpose is for the ball. I like to have a lower flaring pearl and a high flaring pearl. I like to have a lower flaring solid and higher flaring Asym solid, etc......helps me especially on house shot, so I can dig through mud if the lanes have more oil than usual and I can deal with moving pretty far left and slowing it down. 🤘

Yes pin is 2” left of thumb on all symmetrical and asymmetrical I always get a ball wear pin cg and bias in line so then bias is just right of ring finger

The last number in the pin buffer. A smaller number creates a sharper ball motion. And a bigger number makes the ball a bit smoother

I have three layouts that I like: Pin-up ( about an 1.5 inches about the ring finger), a stronger layout with the pin just right of the ring finger (and up about 1/2 inch) and a short pin layout, about 2.25 inches right of the ring finger.

I understand this is illegal now, but did anyone ever only drill a one-hole for one finger? You could conceivably grip it a lot more than six ways by rotating your hand around the ball with only 1 finger in the ball. Was that ever a thing (for 2-handers, i guess?) I have no idea.

No. If you're a palmer/2h you have to scribe a location on the ball where your palm goes. You have to cover this scribed location during delivery of the ball If you had a second one of these marks that wasn't covered it wouldn't be legal in sanctioned play. GL m8

I dont like to try new layouts unless its the same ball I already have in my arsenal and maybe I wanna see a different motion from my typical layout. Keeping layouts the same ball to ball means if my PAP changes and I still like that layout, i dont have to plug and redrill other balls with different layouts to the one I like. Plus it allows the cover and core differences to be seen ball to ball, because the same layout means itll be the same / similar core motion, but also allows the cover to be different and show its differences. If that makes sense.
