16:25 To that DM: Yeah, no. Anyone can create an unwinnable encounter, nothing to brag at. On top of that, "winning" dnd is just a meme. The only way you "win" dnd, is if every part is having fun, DM, players, etc.

I actually saw a brilliant comic strip, where a DM challenged Death to a game of D&D, and "won," because "Everyone had such a fun time." Even though the party defeated the BBEG, Death deemed that the DM had "won," because it was just that much fun. "Same time next week?" "YEAH!" I wish I could link it here, but I lost the link, so... Anyway, let's just say SOMEBODY was CUTTING ONIONS at the end. So good.

The type who says, "It's chaos because I SAID so. Sure, it's just a single dot on a white background, but LOOK at that dot! It's SO CHAOTIC! You don't know which way it will go next, or what color it will be ten seconds from now. SEE? CHAOS!" No, dude. Get a dictionary, and look up Chaos, and learn what it actually means. So many of the problems in these stories would be solved, if people just learned what words MEAN.

I'm not sure what's worse; DM's who decide to 'beat' their players by making it mechanically impossible for them to win, then are all proud about it afterwards like that was some kind of achievement, or DM's who decide to 'beat' their players by making a supremely unfair situation, then get all butthurt when their players find a creative way to win anyway. If it was the DM's job to be their player's opponent, then there would be WAY more restrictions and rules on them. Modules would basically be Choose Your Own Adventure books with a set number of branching options and no deviation from the text with no player OR DM agency because that's the only way to make something like that fair. There are board games like that, go play those. If you wanna defeat your party, as soon as the games starts just tell them that their characters are all dead and you win. It'll save you all a bunch of time and they can go find a new DM who isn't a moron much faster.

Ngl, the coin flipping idea for a casino boss sounds pretty cool for a tough boss fight. It just needs some reworking. A way for the party to win but not unless they can think of a way creatively as opposed to "i hit harder!".

First story: NTA. It’s completely reasonable to not let a player continue playing a character who betrayed the party. Second story: Chill and Dad are the heroes the world needs. Third story: Get out of there, OP. That DM is clearly on a massive power trip, and nothing good can come of staying.

Beyond the DM's attitude... If the entire world has been destroyed by a zombie apocalypse with no more citizens, then Bad Campaign's currently ending setting sounds like a terrible time to add new Players unless the Party were in the middle of undoing the catastrophe in some way or converting all undead into sentient undead that can live as a civilization. It also sounds like the vestiges of a way to save the world was set up with the casino owner and chaos god.

Some people are deranged, and actually believe that looking at one's own body parts is going to turn a person on. Especially if that person is a straight woman. "Oh, I'm so straight! I get SO TURNED ON looking at BOOBS! Even better if they're MY OWN BOOBS. SO horny! I want to screw myself right now!" No. Just no. These are the same people who think sending someone "surprise", unasked-for and unwanted pics of body parts we can't talk about here, are "romantic," and "sure to please." I once found a website, where the women who got sent D-picks would post them, inviting the viewers to "roast" them, and then the women would send their favorite insulting comments back to the idjits who sent the pics, in the first place. Man, there were some REAL zingers there. I'd go back to that site, just for the cool burns, but I don't remember what it was called, and don't want to search for it, for fear of all the REAL d-pick sites I'd find.

The player needs to get a dictionary and look up "Redemption" and what it actually MEANS. He FAILED on his quest, BY CHOICE. I mean, he can still be an NPC, with story-arc. And when they face him, letting him play his former character is cool, BUT, he has to play BOTH his former character AND his new character without meta-gaming, and WITH THE WILL TO WIN. BOTH of them. Sooo, that's going to be interesting. Adding in that they are twin brothers, I foresee long sections of monologuing dialogue, as the barbarian tries to convince his warlock brother to come back to the light (if not the party). That could actually be kind of cool, but it could also come across as "This Guy is taking over the entire session." Either way, the DM was NOT wrong.

No players are part of the adventuring party, and villains are played by the DM. It's fundamental to the game. Also letting the problem player bring in a character who has greater loyalty to his original character is a mistake. You're just going to get a repeat of the player's betrayal and your other players will rightfully feel screwed over when your acceptance of the new character essentially forces them to be double suckers.
@rb98769
@rb98769 2 жыл бұрын
I can understand betrayal if it's properly roleplayed and foreshadowed like in a character development arc, though I also understand it's not for every group's taste. The player suddenly joining the BBEG like that was just weird and it didn't feel justified from the way it was told. Now if he really pulls it again with the new character I'd just boot the player because it'd seem like he's just there to sabotage the game. I imagine the other players are already growing paranoid he's going to do it again, it creates a bad mood in the group.
@Jermbot15
@Jermbot15 2 жыл бұрын
@@rb98769 I think the important difference is whether the betrayal is done in the interests of telling a story that includes the other players, versus telling a story that excludes them. And also clearing such a dramatic change in the direction of the story with the DM first.

Commenting on the first story, I had a character that joined the bbeg and happily rolled a new character. We faced off against my old character as an npc and it was a ton of fun. Lawful evil rogue, lich with an offer….I had to jump on that in character. The group obliterated my old character, which my new paladin joined in with with gusto.
@AuntLoopy123
@AuntLoopy123 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's not so much a problem of just doing it, in general. It's going AGAINST what your character claimed to be doing, in session 0 (redemption quest), and then claiming "It's what my character would do. Also, now you have to give me solo adventures, between group sessions." No. No, the DM does NOT have to do twice the work, just because you CHOSE to go against your own character's stated goals, and said, "It's what my character would do." There are plenty of times when "It's what my character would do" is fine and appropriate. "The group is surrounded by cops with nice, shiny badges." Kleptomaniac: Well, my character... "I JUMP ON KLEPTO and hold him down!" "ME, TOO!" "ME, THREE!" Klepto: I struggle mightily, but I'm small, and have three medium-sized people on top of me." Leader: I talk with the cops and use diplomacy to diffuse the situation, before Klepto can get up and at them and their shiny badges. THAT is a FUN instance of "It's what my character would do." The whole party KNOWS what the character would do, and can act accordingly. When you make a sudden change, without any warning, or foreshadowing, and even against STATED GOALS TO THE DM, then it is NOT "What my character would do." It's "I decided I want to throw everything to hell."
@Currin4
@Currin4 2 жыл бұрын
@@AuntLoopy123 agreed! In my case it was, the lich offers you a place by his side but give me your character sheet said the dm, and i was so amused by the situation i happily obliged. That was a fun campaign! I got to impact the main story as an npc in ways none of us at the table anticipated, and it was a breath of fresh air to have the dm go wild.

I'm commenting on the first story. I don't think the DM is a a-hole. I also don't think the player was a a-hole either. His character joining the BBEG could have been a good plot twist to have his big redemption at the end. Kinda like Dinobot in Beast Wars. The problem is that no one communicated these ideas. Now I get, if the party knows everything of the story, where is the fun. However, the player could have pulled the DM aside and shared this idea with him and see if the DM likes the twist.

Last one; that is not nessicarily so bad. Setting up an initially unkillable bbeg is something a lot of official modules do; you might have to get the mcguffin of bbeg slaying later or something. Making them initially unbeatable gives them a goal to work towards, so having it happen for the first few sessions is not too bad. You see Straud early and often in CoS and the campaign ends when you finally kill him, after all.

That's true, but you shouldn't flaunt your plot-armor in front of the players in the way the c@#$ referee was doing. Show up, give a speech, maybe fight the party for 1 round, get bored and leave after dropping a hint of what they are planning at the moment.
@rynowatcher

@@johngleeman8347 generally, this was one encounter where no one died and they got their party got what they wanted. The horror story completely revolves around not being able to kill the baddie in the first encounter; the op and the dm kind of comes off childish (not an insult; they sound younger), so this sounds appropriate for the age and level of experiance I preceive them having. A lot of these stories just seem like rookie dms trying; I see that as a problem for someone learning to paint who make mistakes when they are learning. No one is born a good dm.

Honestly for the first story, I think what makes dnd especially enjoyable is the unpredictability, and something like that is something I'd make time and accommodate for, albeit it's odd they go back on what they initially intended, but I can understand the limitations with patience and it seems they came to an agreement anyways, personally I think that's less of a horror story and moreso miscommunication, no one's the asshole imo.

So with the first story - DM at the end of the day - it's your narrative - yes the players have agency and should make their own decisions - but - BUT if it's a bad or foolish decision there should be consequences - including losing control of the character or if they resist - the scholar and his group kill the character because if he could betray his party - what makes the scholar believe he won't be betrayed. But that is just me. As to the second story - to quote the Doge: What! Thanks Nipsy for dropping by, now like makes sense again. The last story - the DM wins at D&D - wow what a feat of greatness - so was this before or after the DM stole candy from a baby?

First story: It's a pretty bad move on the player's part if there was no foreshadowing whatsoever, but fine I guess. But demanding the DM run a story just for him is just disrespectful and inconsiderate. The DM doesn't have to run any game they don't want to or give any players special treatment. I'm glad things worked out in the end, but I'm just hoping he won't betray the group again with the new character.
