Advice for new DMs. If you got an edge lord that doesn't want to go adventuring, fine. Don't let him. It's the players job to create characters that actually want to go adventuring. Leave him behind and ask the rest of the group what they want to do. It's always best to not allow that sort of behavior to get any attention.
@CaseyWilkesmusicАй бұрын
When you start a game and decide on your own to spend time/money etc. To bring the game to a group of strangers…you can’t necessarily expect them all to have the same amount of dedication as you. The fact is players inherently don’t have as much investment as the dm. It often leads to disappointment from the DM towards players who might not even be aware of how much the DM is invested in the experience. It’s good to remeber that, yes, we DM for others and it’s a “service” but it’s not an obligation. If someone spends extra time/money on the game but doesn’t ask for compensation from the players, that’s on them.

I've had a player who would fall asleep in one of my games once, but he at least had the excuse that it was a side effect of his medication. Also he didn't start rolling attacks without chatting properly first. Public spaces should have a minimum hygiene requirement.

I once played online with someone who it was midnight an hour into the game for him. The DM would make fun of 3 of us: 1 playing at midnight, me with ADHD, and 1 of us who works 12 hour shifts. The 3 of us left when the 3 of us got bullied by our DMs. (There were 3 on that discord) the DMs were in highschool.

I think it would look cute if we saw character sheets for the kitties when they show up on screen, maybe could cycle between different games. So, the Kitties could have some D&D character sheets, Pathfinder character sheets, Monarchies of Mau character sheets, and Magical Kitties Save the Day! character sheets. Which do you think Doge would/should probably start with? If he were to do that

Story #1 - New DM, not wanting to make mistakes OR (Horror Of Horrors!) lose Players. I completely get that. I do think the whole "I Want To Die" thing could have been resolved in Session 1 - "Congratulations, you got your wish. I want to see your replacement Character before the next session." Simple. But the DM did a good job of resolving that situation HIS way, and his approach as regards the sleep issue was commendable. Really, there was no other realistic solution - it just wasn't going to work. Story #2 - Yeah, the only thing to do with a person like that is to just not play with them, and make it clear to them WHY.
@OdinAUTАй бұрын
Honestly I'm a little hung up on the sleep thing. I mean, we are talking about two adults here. Since when does the DM get to decide on the players sleep schedule? I live in Europe and have played with people from the US before. That meant being online at midnight and gaming till 3 or 4 am. None of these people had the audacity to tell me to go to sleep because it's bad for my health. I think that's a decision an adult can make themselves. If it leads to problems at the table then he can still kick the player, which is what happened in the end.
@kodyshaw6991Ай бұрын
If there are that many problem players and this is this DMs first real go at DMing, I'm thinking he might be the problem. If it wasn't for the time difference, I'd fully understand the sleepy Warlock sleeping through sessions. My entire DnD career as a player, I've fallen asleep at the table out of sheer boredom in 80% of my games. Stuff was boring as watching paint dry.
@ArcCaravanАй бұрын
We won't know until we get context for the other two "problem players". If warlock was that bored, he should have either said something or left instead of ruining someone else's time.

Back in the day, I played and ran games on OpenRPG, the 1st online resource for running games online, and I ran a game where I got up at 5AM to run a game for people in Turkey, Germany, England, Australia, the US East coast. I ran a multi-cultural Call of Cthulhu game and it was fun, despite everyone playing at odd times. I'm just glad everyone was still normal people in the 90s. Back in 1989-1991, there was a guy, another Vet, in the local gaming scene who was a good player and competent GM but he lacked personal hygiene. He was a nice guy, but didn't seem to notice his own odor. I never brought it up, nor did anyone else I knew, but one day he started showing up to play and run games showered, shaved, and in nicer clothing. I heard he reconnected with his ex-wife and if that is why he cleaned up I'm all for that.

Any online game recruitment will be absolutely dominated by USA time zones. There are games in others but they're much harder to find and it very quickly gets demoralising to join an interesting game and then be told it will go ahead without you because you are the only one who can't make the suggested time. This may just be desparation.

I've fallen asleep a couple of times myself. Once, I stayed up all night, and the session was in just a couple of hours. I knew I wouldn't be able to wake up again if I went to sleep then, so I tried to push through it, but fell asleep just half an hour before game time and slept through the whole session. Another time, I had pulled an all-nighter again and fell asleep in like the last hour of the session. We all had a good laugh about it later both times. It was still super embarrassing for me though.😶🌫

So, the 2024 Great Old One Warlock has an interesting interaction in their subclass features. They can cast Enchantment and Illusion spells without components, as long as the Material component doesn't have a cost or isn't consumed. So, I'm considering writing a campaign with a bit of mystery, where commoners and other NPCs keep falling over dead in the street, with no obvious cause. We'll see how long it takes them to catch on that eldritch powers are attacking these victims' minds. And then, they'll get to chase after the villains, a GOO Warlock and an Aberrant Sorcerer loosely based on the Whateley twins from The Dunwich Horror by H.P. Lovecraft. Edit: Mr. I-want-to-die might just inspire me to make a Warlock PC inspired by Eeyore. 😂 He wants to die, but he just can't seem to get there. Oh, well. Might as well keep adventuring until something manages to eat me...
