The K30 is coming along, Jason! I know you expect all kinds of things to go wrong while bringing back an old truck like the Chevy hauler that you're working on. But, the cool thing about it is that piece by piece you're getting her ready to go to work again! It takes a lot of patience and know-how to accomplish what you've taken on and I admire your resolve and mechanical skills. I'm looking forward to seeing how you will utilize that old girl once she's ready for the road again. Best wishes my friend!

What you are going through I call the snowball effect. I had something similar just recently. I was putting pads on the front of my truck easy job right. One caliper was stuck so I replaced it. I noticed the rubber line was cracked, broke the steel line changing it. You get the idea. Ended up replacing all the steel lines,all hoses , calipers . the wheel cylinders and rear shoes and an axle seal. I get the frustration.

Luv that your going to keep it alive ! The top side looks awesome as well as the wheels , But that underside brakes , & the front leaf springs are toast ! But that is going to be one sweet square body when its done , & it looks like the drive train , & cab are in great shape , & you have something solid to work with for a 37 year old truck it looks pretty good ! I have a 1999 Chevrolet C3500 dually dump truck with a Heil dump bed which is the last year for the C/K series , & has a 350 Vortech engine auto. trans. with only 52,000 miles on the clock ! I've owned it for about 5 years now , & the only major thing I've had to do to it was replace the front ball joints ! it's been a great working truck ! & fun to work on as I go along ! I hope the used front leaf springs turn out to be in good shape for Ya that Ya saw on that K/30 in the salvage yard ! Thanks for the video on your 1986 Chevrolet K/30 truck !

Those springs were seriously hammered. I'm a bigger fan of the classic shapely early 60s Chevys and especially the 50s Fords but any square body with a big block makes a fantastic service truck.

Check that the springs aren't designed to be that shape because the front does not look low to me; it looks to be design height. Spring leafs do like to crack right in the middle though, which can be hard, but not impossible to see the crack without removing the spring. Try cleaning the side of the spring right in the middle and looking for cracks with a magnifier like Sherlock or reading glasses, but if not riding low, and no visible crack, I would just fix the spring clamps and leave them. Though be sure to spray wax them when you go by a self serve car wash.

Factory front springs reverse arc in normal on the squares. Most have been fitted with lift springs which have normal positive arc. She is coming along! Also your rear load leveling valve maybe activated by the weight in the bed causing the heavy rear brake bias. Cool project man
@CountryBoyGasGarage2 жыл бұрын
I'm finding that out now that I been shopping for new springs. They are nearly straight when new no weight on em. Also I'm not sure about the load leveling valve?
@844002 жыл бұрын
It has a rod going from the rear axle up to a brake live jubction on the frame. In a nutshell it effects brake bias when there is a load in the bed. They can get stuck and many people bypass or disconnect the m via rod removal or making a brake line. Its common on 1 tons.

A combination of acid (vinegar or stronger), impacts with a small hammer, and heat with a torch(which can also concentrate the acid by boiling off the water), might help you break up the rust in order to remove those hard brake lines without twisting them off. Acid should be rinsed away when finished.

Seems like crawling up a gravel hill, crawl up 2 feet and slide back 3 feet. People always worry about how many miles vehicles have but it seems that it's also a good idea to know how long they been sitting . Good luck buddy.
@stephensaasen85892 жыл бұрын
Those springs do need to be replaced but honestly, I think the arc on the front springs is about right. Our family had our share of square body 4x4 trucks and from what I recall, they had a reverse arc on the front springs. And looking at your truck there, it honestly looks like the correct factory height. Those trucks weren't like the old Ford's of the 1970's that were called Hi-boys because the F250 rode high from the factory. I definitely agree that the leaf separation doesn't look good but I thought I'd throw that tidbit about the spring arc so you wouldn't think there's something wrong when you get replacements. Really nice truck and looking forward to more.
@CountryBoyGasGarage2 жыл бұрын
Hey Thanks! I'm realizing that now after shopping for new ones. Even new they are almost straight with no arc.

I agree with the worn out leaf spring theory. I think the truck was overloaded on worn out springs. A truck that size, I believe, would show more damage underneath if it was jumped. I only know that because a friend and I did that to his dad's one ton farm truck when we were in high school
