Hello friends!
Welcome to another brand history video!
This is a re-upload! The original video was corrupted by iMovie sometime in the exporting process. I re-edited footage. I believe the full video should be here, but the quality is definitely suffering.
Please let me know if you experience any difficulties while watching this video!
ColourPop was very highly requested- and I thank everyone who has left comments requesting specific brands! If there are any brands you'd be curious in knowing more about, please let know.
And let me know what you think about the format of these videos. I'm trying to find the best way to present this kind of content. It's so interesting to me and I hope it's interesting for you to watch!
All feedback is very much appreciated!
I've been having a great time creating content lately. Thank you to everyone for all of your support and kind words! I absolutely could not do this if it wasn't for you.
I have a ton of videos I'm planning and I'm excited to share everything with you- and all video requests + suggestions are always welcome.
Let me know if you have any questions/comments/concerns.
Thanks so much fo watching.
XOXO

Hey, Cynnamon X, I am doing a low-buy, too, having ordered Coastal Scents hot pots to fill in color gaps, and my husband bought me the Oden’s Eye Solmane palette and the two lipsticks I have wanted for a while. Do you have any tips? I am unsubscribing from emails and IG feeds and making a monthly spending plan. I may need a support group - No Other Makeup Orders (NoMo! for short) Anonymous? Elle’s channel will help. I have what I need and want to use what I have, and just buy makeup for friends and family. Go for it! I will watch for your comments! Elle is the best, isn’t she? LOVE her thoughtful, well-informed and honest content. 💕🎉🧚🏼‍♀️

The thing that bugs me most about colourpop is they never have anything that's unique/good in my eyes in stock at the right time. Like, I got the mandalorian palette (solely for the color story itself and I haven't tried their palettes) yesterday but Moonwalk sold out a day earlier and a lot of their pencil eyeliners and everything have sold out in colors I'd be interested in. So it's like there's nothing worth buying to hit $30 unless I had less makeup in the first place, so I was honestly better off paying shipping than buying random crap that I have less interest in for an extra like $7+

This was an extremely enlightening look into social media, brand engagement and consumerism in the modern age. I found it really interesting what you had to say about why people get so defensive about Colourpop - I saw the same kinds of reactions happen recently on a video criticizing Shein. I understand why that happens now. Brands with a strong foothold in social media, very cheap products, and a ubiquitous presence seem to get lots of defenders.

My first Colourpoppalette was My Little Pony and my last the Taupe palette. I really enjoy the eyeshadows. All because of Social Media...strategy works well. Being releasing back to back for reasonable prices keeps them on the radar. I just wish they would create a European Warehouse to avoid taxes, invoice and that sort things. That makes reasonable prices still expensive.

I could see them doing that in the future! It would be cost effective for them as well.
@roxannegabel3655

The only thing I'd be worried about in this instance is that you would only have access to products stocked in the European Warehouse which means you wouldn't have as big a range to choose from and the new releases would be available a lot later.
@jolanda.c

@@roxannegabel3655 that is with a lot of international/USA based brands. Christmasreleases you see in september, we get in november. But it depends on the brand and the resellers. Cult Beauty and Sephora France is daar enough while Douglas and Ici Paris in the Netherlands are most of the time late and limited.

i am not really a beauty consumer, i am a graphic designer and i started watching beauty youtube bc it is fun seeing all these products and their packaging and design, without having to worry about wanting to buy everything lol. i've become obsessed bc for whatever reason the beauty world is very compelling, though i am an outsider. as a graphic designer i find colourpop especially fascinating bc they really have the ability to deliver concepts that really sell a vibe or idea or dream that make their collections desirable. they really nail the packaging, as a design case study they have been doing everything right, their products rarely look cheap though they are inexpensive (except those plastic monochromatic 9-pans, the cardboard packaging is superior in aesthetic and sustainability). they are youthful but not immature, older consumers may not vibe with every collection, but there are some collections that would appeal to a more mature consumer. i love seeing their collections, honestly, however not so much lately. i really appreciated elle's perspective in this video bc she reminded me that consumers who are passionate about makeup want to support brands that are passionate about makeup and while what i see colourpop doing as really smart from a design perspective, i'd never really thought about how that lack of passion for the love of makeup makes their success and oversaturation kinda depressing. HOWEVER I really think this mindset has started to work against them especially in 2021. not only are people tired of the constant new releases many of which look exactly the same as other collections they have released, i really think their design concepts just haven't been that great either. the 5 pan palettes that look exactly like the natasha denona's, the clear plastic quads with no interesting theming, its all really boring tbh. i think as indie brands have really been shining in how they deliver cool unique concepts with great quality, colourpop's releases have really looked lackluster in comparison. i think that it is becoming more transparent that they are kinda coasting on the success they have been able to build and that they are not really trying anymore to do something different. it will be interesting to see how things play out for them since i think a lot of consumers are starting to prioritize supporting smaller brands who put more thought and love into their products, even though they may be more expensive. i think that is a good thing bc it will maybe shake things up and colourpop will have to start listening more. anyways, fascinating!

When I learned that they purposefully dont stock things I lost all interest in buying from them. With the shipping cost to my country, I would only consider making one big order with all the products I want. If they never stock them all at the same time, I wont make the order.

As someone who does buy cruelty free beauty products, I think coming out of the gate swinging in that regard was good marketing. I have a mental list of brands that I know I can buy from and will sometimes buy from a familiar brand instead of looking up a new one, although that's more of an in store shopping problem. Plus the trickle down of cruelty free information can take ages. It's probably been a year since covergirl got leaping bunny certified and there are still people that don't know because why look up information on a brand that you're already familiar with.

This was such an interesting video - I love exploring the business side of brands like this. I feel like KL is to CP like JH is to Morphe, except far less controversial. If you think about it, KL has helped CP to launch or relaunch quite a few new product catagories (loose shadows, mega palettes, powder blushes, etc). Also, as a beauty blogger (yes, I still write posts) it was interesting to year your perspective on the death of beauty blogging lol. And, I geeked out a little bit that one of the photos from my blog (from my Ultimate CP Palette Ranking) showed up around the 19:37-19:40 mark. :D

I didn’t order from CP for years bc I hated their website. I have about 8 of their 9 pan palettes. They’re fun and easy which is a big part of the brand’s success. Another factor is their collabs that pull at people’s good memories, from Disney to I think it’s Lizzie Maguire. I’m not into that PR gimmick (or I’d have snatched up Pat MacGrath Star Wars palettes), but the numbers of people who are is working for CP right now. I think this is very interesting. As an international consumer I'll say more and more people start using Colourpop, so they might not be at their peak but they will be in the business for the long run if they dont mess up big time. I approach each and every of their rapid releases as it could be their first eyeshadow palette or Colourpop product. At the end of the day you have full control on what you want or dont want to be in your collection. Just because you have similar products doesnt mean everybody else have them. So i found it amusing everytime. Thanks for your research 😊

They seem very famous for their highlighters and "aqua" powder but I'm guessing it takes more than two successful products to run an international beauty brand. Becca is one of the brands that sell out of foundations whenever Sephora has a sale and in the last 6 months, I cannot think of a day/week/month when at least one if not all of their foundations were 30% off

These videos are great! I love how thorough your research is. I'd be really interested to hear more about Coty. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like them acquiring a beauty brand is the kiss of death for that brand. They have purchased several that had decent products and then those brands kind of moved into obscurity or lost all relevance (Philosophy and Burberry are two I can think of off the top of my head). I believe they also acquired Stella McCartney perfumes as well. 🤔 At any rate, keep up the great work and thank you so much for posting these! They are so much fun to watch.

I too heard about colourpop from kathleen lights. I was intrigued and bought a few brushes, lippies and super shock shadows. I really liked the brushes and the shimmery supershock shadows, but those dried up super fast :( the lippies that they had in stock and that I liked were very matte and a bit drying, so I wasn't a fan. then I got an all-shimmer eyeshadow pallette through boxycharm. that was the last straw: tons of fallout and very little pigment. Now I've watched many tutorials with CP shadows and they seem to be such good quality! but somehow I ended up with maybe their only bad product? dunno. Either way, I'm kind of glad they disappointed me from the get go, otherwise I surely would be ordering more and more.

I used to love coffeebreakwithdani Edit: as for customer service I had a pretty good experience with colorpop. I mainly had this one issue where I received someone else’s order (and I’m outside of the US) they took a few days to get back to me so not ASAP but when they did it was sorted pretty quickly and I even got to keep the wrong order where only one item (a concealer) was not usable for me. And also once they sent the correct other I feel like they went with a more express shipping as it didn’t take nearly as long as when the incorrect order came to my international country.

Brand history is fascinating to me. I've been around since the launch of Colourpop so I knew some of this but learning about the lawsuits and that the founders' father owned the lab was interesting. I used to love Colourpop but I've soured on them in the last few years. Their quality-to-price ratio is still decent but their "fast beauty" model annoys me. I'd rather either go with a tried-and-true brand or try something new.

I only bought the Yes Please pallette because I couldn't get the ND Sunset Palette. I was underwhelmed, threw it out, and have never been tempted by them. Idk why I just don't care for Colourpop. It just seems so cheap but I just love Milani which is also affordable.

I bought some products based on Kathleen light back in the day but didn’t like it so much and never purchased again . Seeing what they were doing , they looked a little suspicious to me and using the influencers was obvious that they gave them the products for free that’s why everyone on KZbin were so obsessed with them . I’m glad I didn’t bought anymore from a brand like this .

Excellent! I see this in tiny brands like Givemeglow and menagerie, the diff is they are waiting for stock from PRC. I guess that’s more like Morphe. I think supporting brands like sydney grace is vital. KL is a racist and I don’t get why she’s still around. More people need to call Colourpop out in the fast fashion garbage thinking

I don’t buy color pop because everytime I have found something I might wanna try, it’s not in stock. literally every single thing I have ever wanted is never in stock so I just take my money elsewhere. If a company can’t get their supply chain shit together, or purposefully keeps a low stock, then hard pass.
