Well, Amazon were true to their word. I just did a manual update on my First-gen 64GB Scribe, and it now has the 5.17.2 firmware! So glad I didn’t succumb to the temptation to buy the 2024 version, as I prefer the black screen surround. Writing within books works as advertised, with the text reflowing around the inserted handwriting “canvas”.

Loved this video! It was exactly what I needed to know before buying it. Could you do a comparison with the Remarkable 2 please? I haven’t seen any comparison between them, not a single video

They did the same refresh on the kindle and the paperwhite they just essentially bought out a new colour and called it new on all their devices this year. The only true new device is the coloursoft.

I missed this live, but thank you for saving me a few hundred euros! Doesn't look like they changed all that much from the previous Scribe.

The previous kindle scribe has already received all those new updates or not yet?

Yes, all Kindle Scribes now have this update.

Maybe I am confused on what you are looking for, but there is an undo/redo button right on the toolbar (45 minute into the video as type this, so maybe you found it later) 🙂

I’m aware of it. I’m looking for a gesture for it so I can leave the tools collapsed.

@@BrandonKBoswell Ahh sorry, misunderstood that part, obviously.

The software is an interesting update and clearly better than software versions prior to 15.7.2 and kudos to Amazon for making it available to us Kindle v 1.0 owners. However, ironically, I now find myself comparing the Kindle Scribe more to paper books than to other e-ink devices. The purpose of active canvas is to allow on-page annotation. In that sense, it's a step in the right direction. However, it falls into that uncanny valley where it kinda feels like the "natural" experience of actual pencil on paper book but it's all a bit off. Now, this could just be me. When I write on e-ink screens my writing has a bit of a little-kid-with-fat-pencil look and feel to it and the screen within a screen experience created by the small active canvas box only magnifies this experience for me. These e-ink screens continue to make incremental improvements, but that's what they are, incremental. Give me an e-ink screen where I can more naturally pinch-to-zoom quickly and write naturally in the margins and then we'll have something. Until then, it's all a bit kludgy uncanny valley territory.

Just wait until one of their deal days and you can pick up the kindle scribe for a lot less.

What is your recommended device for writing, if not this one?
