I’m from Hawaii and that breakfast is literally a classic Hawaiian breakfast, Sausage links, Portuguese sausage, eggs and spam which is eaten by all locals in Hawaii. That prepackaged breakfast was probably $8 and a completely normal (and popular) thing to eat in Hawaii. So not only are Brent and crew assholes for literally throwing away food that was not theirs, they disrespected the place they were visiting by calling local food “Disgusting”. It’s okay I’m sure that Brent has never heard of spam as i’ve never seen it served on a silver spoon.

@@cupriferouscatalyst3708 I live in Hawaiʻi & things are so bad here. I have mental breakdowns almost daily for how hard it is to just afford necessities & I’m technically middle class based on US standards. Native Hawaiians make up 10% of our population but over half of the homeless population. In our culture the land here means everything to us. It’s where we come from; it’s where our ancestors are. We fight so hard to stay here & some of us fight until it gets to a point you can no longer leave to live somewhere affordable. I really appreciated Kurtis’s response to them coming here & how they treated the people Brent’s sister was staying with. Also, there’s literally no way she spent $50 to stay there. She most likely spent at least $100-150 per night. Hostels cost $70 a night & Air Bnbs have so many restrictions due to laws in place to prevent rent increases, so they’re really expensive.

As a person who lived in STL Missouri it was so tiring everyday walking around telling people how dangerous it is.
@Wellworm Жыл бұрын
Yeah. STL can be dangerous AF, but mostly for the victims of gang violence who are stuck in horrible conditions and a cycle of deeply racist oppression. The leadership literally abandoned places like North St. Louis and East St. Louis.
@TheShauNanigans Жыл бұрын
I find it interesting that St. Louis has the reputation it does. I've been there so many times for a variety of reasons and have never felt unsafe. I believe that some areas certainly are. Don't get me wrong. But even then, I honestly enjoy going there more than I enjoy going to Chicago. The vibe is just different. If someone asked if I wanted to do something in St. Louis, I'd say sign me up. Danger can find you wherever you go. It is more a matter of luck and common sense whether it finds you or not (universal you) People should not let the idea of potential danger stop them from doing something other than very extreme circumstances. Just my take on it.

@@madiisuun I am so glad you were in a situation where you were able to get away. Sincerely! That would get my blood pumping for sure to say the least. I live in a relatively small college city (Champaign-Urbana), and had a couple people follow my friend and I while walking downtown on Friday. They asked us for help, and while I'm not opposed to giving a dollar here and there to someone in need, these two people came up out of the darkness and were just generally creepy people. After we said we couldn't help them, they followed us for a couple blocks. Thankfully, nothing bad happened, but crime in general has gone up statistically in my city, and I want to stress that my friend and I both were close to running, but they were still keeping pace or could have easily decided to stop following us at any point. I do not typically feel unsafe, but it does happen. Scary stuff can happen anywhere, at any time, and while we should be cautious of our surroundings, we should not let it stop us from going somewhere or doing something. She and I had a wonderful time other than that experience, but it does seem like a good example for this current discussion.

It really is something that ruins lives, and if the people around us had been more empathetic, and she hadn't been demonized and criminalized for her substance abuse, she could have gotten the help she needed and maybe she'd still be here. People don't realise how damaging it is to call addicts dangerous and criminalize them. It prevents them from getting the help they need, and it tears families apart. Their portrayal of Slab City is genuinely one of the most ghoulish things I’ve seen in my life. People with mental illnesses, addicts, and unhoused people are treated bad enough by society, and it’s so horrifically sad knowing that they’re not even safe in a community they’ve built from the ground up. These people aren’t “dangerous” or evil and murderous, they just want to live peacefully without some pathetic rich kid waving a camera in their faces.

As a recovering addict it makes me feel really seen, respected, and loved hearing Kurtis talk about harm reduction and how the government neglected the area when they could’ve had things like safe injection sites and community outreach. I’m sure the community would have loved the opportunity to be apart of that but no effort was made for the bare minimum of keeping these people alive. i go to slab city all the time and no one has ever said it’s dangerous 😭 literally u just go and enjoy the art… most of the locals set up art exhibits at their camp and they just want to show it off to visitors. A lot of them actually love sitting with people and just telling stories about their lives. Once a month, they host a little potluck in the community with chili and an open mic show. Yes, there are a few people that want to be left alone and they just leave signs to stay off their property or they’ll have a line of empty bottles/tires serving as a sort of fence. No one’s gonna hurt you unless you literally break into their house. Slab city is quite literally all people that wanted to escape the hustle culture and just sit in the desert and create sculptures. It’s wholesome asf if you’re open minded about the culture. If i have friends come to CA from out of state, I always try to stop by slab city with them. As for the no laws situation, cops don’t go out there. Mostly because the closest station is about 1.5-2 hours away. @Courage Karnga Cali. Out around Death Valley. The nearest town is a rinky dink place called Niland. It's called that because it's built on the slabs of an old military training camp. The most dangerous part of the place is the heat in the summertime, but in the winter, it turns into a sort of festival. It's a unique winter birding location, but few people stay all year. So if you go, make sure it's not during the hot months.
