Why Winning the Lottery Was a 19 Year-Old's Worst Nightmare

Happy lottery stories seem few and far between, so let’s focus on the larger than life case of 19-year-old Briton, Michael Carroll. He quickly became one of the most infamous winners - starting his fame by collecting his winnings wearing a police tracking anklet.
Michael then went about spending his newly found fortune responsibly, investing in his future and keeping a low profile… except he did none of those things.

Well, it could certainly cause family rifts, depending on the family and if people view it as “our” good fortune. People who win and make the news also get bombarded with charity requests, sketchy investment people and targeted for crime (including at least 2 murders as with DeeDee Moore). That is why some lotteries now allow winners to remain anonymous.

“Money can’t buy happiness” is a statement about happiness not money. Money can’t make you happy because happiness is not dictated by circumstance. You will still have problems if your money problems go away. They will simple be different problems. Happiness comes from Fulfilling purpose in the moment. Not from the crazy fun things you can do that if only you had enough money. That is not to say that your problems are not Significant but happiness exist in Spite of problems not in their absence. That really depends on how much you win and how old you are. If your winnings are in the region of $1-5 million and you're younger than about 40, you'll probably need to live a relatively normal life. If you've won $5 million or more, you can probably quit your job, buy a nice house in a sensible area, and live out your days feeling financially secure. If your winnings are in the multi-millions (as in, like, 2 million), you can pretty easily quit your job and never work another day in your life, even with a family. Provided you budget accordingly. Which means not spending like a millionaire, even though you technically are at the moment. Pretending you didn't win anything and just saving it for emergencies is a bit excessive, IMO. Like, yes, put away some percentage of it for stuff like that, but there's no need to ignore all of it.

I realized from the beginning that winning changes nothing. I have the same anxieties as before I won. Bill's still need to be paid. I feel that everyone should win the lottery. Just to see how fruitless the experience is. If I had won a million dollars. It still wouldn't have been enough. It goes by so quickly just on the basic necessities. If I won the lottery, which is unlikely, since I never play, I'd do this: - Hire a lawyer. People will come after your money in many ways. A lawyer can help you protect it - Set up a trust fund. Your biggest enemy is yourself. Protect your money from yourself. Can't mess it up if you can't access it. Make sure to set it up in a way you won't regret, though. There should be a way to withdraw more in an emergency or split the fund for your children, etc. Just make sure to make it really really hard to spend it all. - Try to keep it a secret as much as possible. I'd definitely tell my immediate family (siblings and parents), but try to keep it from the extended family. I definitely wouldn't want my aunt to hear of it... Oh, and I'd definitely buy a plane. Unlike the guy in the video, I actually have a license, though ;)

This is basically what I did. I didn't win the lottery exactly, but my mom died and she had a house nobody else was going to use so I had it sold and ended up with $100k while I was in college. I paid off my car, invested all the rest in a diversified portfolio, and let it stay there, never taking more out. Never. I work hard and make money for my normal expenses. That money is building into my retirement fund. I could have bought a really nice car or lots of other things. I still won't pay more than $500 for a PS5. I'm just frugal by nature. @@labadaba5088 Not really. In the US, you obviously have to disclose your actual identity to the lottery commission for tax purposes. But in certain states, you can elect to collect your winnings anonymously, i.e. not have your name or personally identifiable information disclosed to the public. All of the identity confirmation, ticket validation, etc. will be done anyway to collect your winnings, so why is a news conference or announcement of the winner's identity necessary? It's not. In my state, Texas, a person can collect any lump sum winnings over $1mil anonymously. It's literally just a check box on the form that states that they can't disclose your name, address, martial status, or any other information that could reasonably identify your identity. However, they reserve the right to publish the county or city in which you live. Cheating in the lottery commission is so infrequent that I can only think of 1 instance in about 30 years of someone working for the Lottey actually cheating to win and that guy was charged and sued, so I think it's safe to assume that cheating isn't the problem. States requiring winners to publish their identities is the bigger issue by a mile.

I think a lot of people are clueless when it comes to buying a mansion with lottery winnings. They're very expensive to maintain, plus property taxes are through the roof! There are so many scary stories out there about clueless lottery winners. However, I remember hearing about a couple many years ago who won a substantial amount of money (several million). They kept working and waited about a year before they told anybody. They didn't want to go crazy with their money, so they really took their time with making decisions about how to spend/save/invest it.

@@zergreenone8111 There are more than a few accounts of 'financial advisors' draining a winner's account dry and manipulating the majority of the loss into their own accounts. A few have gone to jail for it. However not nearly enough. And they don't just prey on lottery winners. Trust funds, inheritances, any sizeable sum of money they can get permission to 'manage' becomes fair game. An old friend of mine's mother passed away while they were still a minor. There was a house and a fair amount of money left to them and put into a trust. It was left under the control of a financial manager until they turned 18. Which was 3 years later. When they went to get their inheritance it was all gone. Intentionally mismanaged to non-existence. And though they did pursue charges, nothing ever came of it.
