AustonNyMarner it’s a cap dump deal. If he went to arbitration, his old salary is taken into account and realistically they needed bodies at that point in time. Holl didn’t play so it was unknown if he could plug into the bottom 6. Paying ceci 4.5 for this year is well worth getting rid of that albatross of a contract that LOU signed. They don’t have a first year because of lou. Realistically, next year is first year of Dubas having space to create his own roster without having to fix old mistakes.

winnipeg makes it work regardless of the dmen, INCLUDING lifetime AHL defensemen!! this is not a personnel issue, its a coaching and systems issue. we all watch the same games, and see the exact same breakouts, same breakins, same defensive schemes, and the entire league has them figured out! how many times is it a turnover in the o-zone or the neutral zone that leads to a 2-on-1 or 3-on-2, which is where a lot of the goals end up coming from. or how many of the goals come from the other team passing the puck on the outside, along the boards, then getting a free guy break out in front for a 1-on-0 play against the goalie? these are all due to bad assignments, bad matchups, poor defensive schemes. the players can learn to play better defence, but they have not, and we can't expect the players to just TEACH THEMSELVES how to play d!! that is ALL the coaching!

I was a long-time hockey coach. After many years of coaching, I realized the following: 95% of coaching success comes from the players. How skilled they are, how self-motivated they are, and how selfless (team-minded) they can be. At MOST .... 5% of a team’s success can be attributed to the coach. Sorry to share this secret to those who think that hockey coaches actually make a difference. 5% folks !!!!

There's no way the Leafs could have got those 4 forwards for 5 million less. No way. At most 3 million. At most. That's 750K less for each player. But Tavares was a free agent and Matthews is the type of player you don't battle with. You get him signed. So the 2 problem contracts are Marner and Nylander. You get them at 750K less that's only 1.5 million more for the cap. That's 2 minimum wage players.

Thank you Mike for your commitment to trying to build a team focused on two way 60 minute hockey. You brought us consecutive improved points each year you were here and 3 years of playoffs. It's a damn shame that their are two many individuals on the team that are committed to themselves rather then executing the plan you have given them. But most of all its a shame that you have a GM who is so short sided to think that speed and skill on its own instead of skill and will is what wins championships. For some reason, it feels like this organization is as bad as it ever was (they did going into Arizona to deflect from Auston Matthews return and potential local press heat on his summertime incident cause they know mass Toronto media herd would show up) and I am ashamed to call myself a Leaf fan. While I always will be, it's losing steam It shouldn't of been you Babs.

Coming to the Maple Leaf organization is usually where you come to end you career. Eg. Belfour, Joseph, Ron Wilson.. But if Bab's isn't done, I hope he joins a team and takes them to the Cup to rub it in the Leafs' faces. But in all honesty, I think they should've fired Nylander though.

Yes his tenure was a success as some one from the GTA the leafs havent been this good/fun to watch since before the last lockout in like 05 i know they didnt win anything and this year has been bad but he was apart of us getting better a being a consistant playoff team the last 3-4 years

I'm not sure the reason for the failure thus far is the sum of these micromanagement issues - It's clear to me that this team displays a lack of passion, drive, determination etc. I also question whether these players are even capable of reaching championship levels of the type of character required. I think it's important to distinguish between the type of player and the character behind that player.

It's not Babcock 's fault, I know he has to be the fall guy cuz the players are bulletproof. But between the lockout in 2004-05 and the hiring of Babs in 2015-16 they made the playoffs ONCE in 12 years. Then they make it 3 straight years under Babs, and HE'S the reason they can't get it done. No. Its Dubas blowing his load on 4 guys and not having much depth offensively, poor D and subpar goaltending with no backup. If anyone should be faulted its Dubas.

Yeah good move fire the coach! PFFFT!! You have 4 STAR players making half the salary cap that can't do jack! And the defensive core playing like they're in the AHL man! I've been into hockey for 50 years and you can't put this all on the coach!!!! Marner Matthews nylander Tavares need to step it up or trade one of them because all these guys give a s*** about is their own stats and not playing as a team! Sad day! " GO LEAFS GO "

Matthews has 27 point in 23 games ten more then the next highest active Leaf. He is a plus seven. He has 86 shots in 22 games. He has a 59.11% Faceoff Percentage. He is fifth in the NHL in goals. Matthews is stepping up.

Honestly, I'm pissed off that Burke mentioned Nylander as a liability at the same time he called him the Leafs 6th best player which contributes. It's like he thinks that's an overpayment when Kevin Hayes makes more at an older age that is regressing faster.

But if they had 5 million for a d-man, they would have wasted it on Jake Gardiner, who in case people aren't paying attention is on pace for something resembling 20 points and -45, as opposed to bringing back a Hainsey, even though they already have too many Gardiner types and not enough Hainsey types(if any)
