There should be some special type of frogs that need a specific jar. Like every water bug in a jar - a frog that is made out of water, every bee type in a jar - a frog that looks like a bee in a crown.

Cozy Grove has an interesting system of getting cats. Basically, there are three items that you can combine that will attract a particular type of cat. One of the items is responsible for the color, one for the rarity, and then there are specific combinations that will give very rare species. You can look up "cozy grove cat beckoner recipes" for inspiration

You could use the watering can on the worm holes to coax them out. And if you have not already, perhaps include one of those bug house things (They are frames with sticks and gaps for bugs to nest in)

Another frog idea 💡 Candyfrog: "A peachy pink frog with rose pink and purple dots around its back. When picked, it will poof sprinkle clouds and vomit sweet syrup if taken care of. That said sweet syrup can be used as ingredients for desserts. Yum yum!" Slime frog: "A slime in a shape of a frog. That's it" I want these ones since i learned from this vid that you can tame a posh cat/ gentleman cat and a greedy ahh cat with a catfood more expensive than a minimum worker's salary in that one game. 6:01 Also, a honey bee is just a glass with honey on it so it makes sense to add a candyfrog

I think it would be really cool if the jar system had more to do with the types of bugs put in the jars, not just a value system; frogs having unique preferences for certain bugs would make the system more dynamic, giving meaning to the bugs you catch- where with the current system, you could fill a jar with many common bugs, making rare bug catching less important. It would add more meaning to bugs you catch, and make some frogs super special. Anyway, the game is looking amazing so far! Good luck on development!
@realdevfrog
@realdevfrog Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! For sure, the original plan for the bug jars was actually to make it so each frog would have a specific bug preference, but I decided to keep it simpler because I've aleady got unique food preferences for each frog, and as of now I haven't tested the balance of bug spawn rates so it might be pretty difficult if players had to catch specific bugs for specific frogs, especially since the maps themselves aren't really that big to begin with That being said, it's also possible I come back and add this feature as well :)

Good job! These tiny guys are adorable. I absolutely love the little detail of snails and worms hiding after/until clicked, so interactive! With already existing designs looking so nice and pretty I can only imagine what would, say, beetles look like 👀 Now I've been thinking- the lunarflies flash pretty rapidly, wouldn't it sore the eye after a few minutes of the nighttime? I'm not well aquatinted with real life fireflies myself, it's just a little detail that got me worried. Now to the bug jars - that's a cool system! I love the bugs just bouncing around, it couldn't have been done better, 10/10. Though I have a small idea - what if bugs' value number was not actually shown? It's a tiny bit confusing to see the two numbers at once, but I figured it kind of takes away the pleasure of discovery. Like, you'd assume more common bugs should be 'worth' less, right? Or you'd notice it at some point, and then you'd start wondering, and you'd figure this whole value system on your own. I would absolutely love that, figuring such stuff myself and prioritizing things in my own way. Maybe instead of numerical values there could be color markings for the level of rarity. It's an easily read tier system, so players can still see the bug's value while not confusing the two numbers. And please tell me there's going to be a unique/shiny/differently coloured variant of some bugs! In any case, keep up the good work! I hope you'll enjoy working on the frog pals next, good luck!
@realdevfrog
@realdevfrog Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your feedback and support! I could definitely make the brightness/glow of light sources a toggleable feature in the settings for those who want it :) I really like the idea of not displaying the value of bugs, and instead giving them rarity colors! I agree that would encourage more discovery and experimenting, which is what I'd like the game to be about. And yes, there will 100% be "shiny" bug variants for (hopefully) each bug, with funny twists on the names like Honey Bees (literally a bee made of honey).
@nanahyakuman
@nanahyakuman Жыл бұрын
Wouldn't be surprised if the suggestion has already been made, but it might be cool for bug jars to have multiple axes instead of just an absolute tier, like a sweet tooth frog that needs at least 20 points in honey bugs or a nocturnal frog that only cares about night bugs. (Although i can also see it ending up too involved for a "cozy" game, so might tread lightly.) Nice video!

It looks so good! For the bug catching it would be cool to add a bit of difficulty. Right now catching higher tier or lower tier bugs doesn't give the player much satisfaction since you're just clicking on them. You could have a mini game that pops up once you click on the bug. Maybe a timer based one? To help with progression you could allow the player to gain proficiency with catching a certain bug or bug group. Kinda like the stardew valley fishing mechanic but simplified to fit your game. 😁
@realdevfrog
@realdevfrog Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I love the idea of proficiency, and I've been meaning to potentially add some kind of super simple lvling/proficiency system to the game. A minigame when clicking on bugs would be nice too, but I'll needa figure out how to implement it so it doesn't detract players too much from the actual island :)
@EntropicAster
@EntropicAster Жыл бұрын
While I agree that the bug catching is an interesting way to add some difficulty, I feel like the clicking on them can be a minigame. If rarer bugs were harder to notice (like the grasshopper), needed more steps to catch (like the snail), and/or require setup to successfully catch, doing so could be really satisfying. Then bug-catching proficiency could unlock lures, traps, and the like.

I think you could add a tiny frog that appears near water when captured it can be an accessory for the frog, and depending on which frog it goes on depends the pose it would be on, like if attached to a floppa it wpuld be doing the same pose on top of its back (And you could make a subsection for tiny jars to catch different tiny frogs, kinda like you need a common tiny frog for a regular frog, and a rare tiny frog for rare frogs) Just an idea Love the Devlogs 🐸🫠

One suggestion for the bug jars: Given that a certain bug cap is required to reach a jar level, consider what will you do if bug is eg. Level 4 but few points away from level 5. Two options I find viable: a) increased chance a given percentage based on how much extra points there is for the next tier. That way it'll be worth it to get a level 4 with few points (increasing chance of level 5 frogs) Or b) refund as much bugs (going from most "expensive" ones) as possible just enough to get the level but not waste extra bugs

Or would you add a few other animals that can be villagers like cats and dogs but like they’re rare? Also are you going to add like other non villager animals, like deer wondering the forest of bunnies in holes? The bug system looks very cute! I remember you saying that you can give bug jars to frogs therefore, befriending them. That sounds really cool. I thought of another idea related to the bugs though. The bugs could be workers for you. For example, if you have a load of pet dragon flies, they can do tasks for you (because they are pets and are your friends). They could move around items for you. Worms maybe could plant seeds. Also, could you make a lunarfly lantern- wait, that sounds familiar... Well, Team Cherry is too busy working on Sliksong, you could add it!

Finally!! New dev log! If I haven’t said this already, I’m honored to be an early player (or viewer for now), can’t wait for this game to release! I would add text saying “Tools” where you hover over to show all tools. I like to collect a LOT, but usually if collecting would give it a purpose, so, maybe add more rarities to bugs where some are harder to find and catch than others. Just so they serve more purpose, you could add a trading area where you could trade certain bug jars for other seeds/items. That is a little off the game style but it could be a cool side feature I guess. Can’t wait for the next devlog :D!

Highly looking forward to see what comes next! >w< Quick Thought on the bug system: super cute, designs are adorable, and could possibly work as a minigame (like Stardew Valley's fishing system)! Say, for example, you click on a hole or shrub. a small icon appears and you click again, then enter the minigame attempting to nab the bug in a net (if that's the desired tool). Anyway, that's my two cents on it! I don't expect it to be added, but I think it could work for rarer bugs in particular.

I remember the first devlog, this game has came a far way since then😀 Are you going to add fish? If you do you could make food with them, that would be neat!

Im wondering if requiring multiple clicks for some bugs might cause them to feel unnecessarily tedious over time? Obviously two clicks isnt that much more effort needed, but over time it could add up and feel overly awkward? Maybe if you changed the interactibility to be more focused on mouse proximity than double clicks it could avoid this problem? I cant be sure, since i havent played it, so this could be a nonissue, but i figured id pitch it anyway
@realdevfrog
@realdevfrog Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback! Mouse proximity would definitely be another way to tackle it, but I'm just worried that would make navigating the screen a bit harder if the player is too focused on where their mouse cursor is lol I'll definitely have to do some more playtesting to balance it out :)

@@realdevfrog I assume that the comment was regarding the worms. I personally find it slightly counterintuitive that the worms show up when you click them instead of hide. It might be interesting to look into setting the worms up in a similar but easier way to the lunar flies. This would also introduce the catching mechanic to the player on a way easier level, with a stationary object.

Looking great so far! I think the crafting your own jar element makes a lot of sense. Will there be any other ways to increase the jar's value, or frogs that only like a specific type of bug? For example you may have the highest tier jar out, but because it doesn't also have at least one lunarfly inside, the given frog wouldn't visit?
@realdevfrog
@realdevfrog Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I think I'll instead have it so frogs will only have specific bug jar tier preferences, rather than specific bug preferences. This means that rare frogs will always come if theres a high tier V bug jar, but it doesn't matter what bugs are actually in the jar :) In addition to bug jars, players can increase the chance of a specific frog visiting by placing down toys!

The bugs are really adorable! I'm a bit worried about the lunar flies, though. As someone with motion sensitivity, the quick and bright flashes looked like they can be quite painful. It might be worth making the flash less bright and making it appear and disappear more slowly?

super cute! Could you maybe make the Lunarflies slightly bigger? From their current size they look like they'd be overly difficult for people with poorer reaction times/disabled people to catch. Maybe some sort of toggle that makes the bugs easier to catch for disabled people could be implemented?

These bugs are so cute! 💖Are the jars an item that we'll have to buy from the store or do we have a set amount that we re-use like tools? Were you planning on adding other uses for the bugs like composting using worm and weeds, and bee keeping? Sorry for the barrage you really opened a whole can of worms with this new feature! 😁 Also you know how there are cat trees that you could place in Neko Atsume? Would you consider a frog version that's water fountain house/slide/tower?
@realdevfrog
@realdevfrog Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I'm actually not sure, I think I'm leaning more towards jars being something you need to craft/buy, but it's entirely possible they could just be re-usable too :) I am planning on adding more uses for bugs! Things like composting which you suggested, bee keeping, using bugs to craft bait for fishing, light sources from lunarflies, etc, lots of possibilities. And yes, I'll be taking a lot of inspiration from the toys of neko atsume, so a froggy water fountain house could be great!
