AS-90 was supposed to get an upgrade to 52cal barrel as the AS-90 Braveheart. But in the midst of the GWOT it was cancelled in favour of more COIN gear. But, the Braveheart was essentially licenced to the Polish where it became the Krab SPG. Albeit with a different hull. AS-90 doesn't use the Challenger 1 hull though...that bit the video gets wrong. It's no relation whatsoever. The original GBT series turret could be mounted on a CR1 hull which is where I think this myth comes from, that turret was then further developed into the AS-90 on a dedicated new production hull.

Odd they don't fire from within the treeline. The angel it was showed firing in seems to be possible to do if they stop at the incline rather than leaving the treeline, surely the gun should be able to fire using a lesser elevation of the barrel as it would get some from the chassis being at a steeper angle as opposed to the more level ground outside the treeline. Staying in the treeline would not only mean being in cover all the time, but also that they don't mark their location by leaving and constantly refreshing tracks leading to their hiding spot.
@ashleygoggs56792 ай бұрын
People keep bringing up the tracks issue as if they think its easy to do. Look at the possition, its a tree line with an open field. The reason they are hiding is to not be spotted. Sending men out there to tidy the tracks everytime they need to shoot the gun is too risky. This is an active warzone aswell so its not like tank tracks are uncommon when you got ifvs, MBTs and SPGs everywhere. Its much easier to drive in your own tracks and not create new ones and not put your soldiers out in the open to be fired at by a sniper. Tracks are inevitable no way around it.
@bzdtemp2 ай бұрын
@alastairwallace6153 Well. If you fire just meters from your hide out and leave tracks to follow then firing in the open does that as well. And your easier to spot when moving to the firing position, while firing and while moving back than if you fire while in partial cover.
@bzdtemp2 ай бұрын
@@ashleygoggs5679 Part of why I wondered why they don't fire from just inside the exit from their hiding spot, that would hem not making/refreshing tracks in the open. Now I am sure there is a good reason as to why the soldiers do as seen in the video, it is just I wonder why.

@ashleygoggs56792 ай бұрын
most tracked vehicles are going to be unsuitable. Unless you actively clean the tracks on a constant basis. I would argue challenger is one of the more suitable becuase of its track width and hull height for clearance. The issue is the weight which nulifies it a little. But any tank over 40 tons is going to have issues which is basically every MBT fighting in ukraine.

Maybe they should mask the track marks after every fire mission. As a drone operator I would watch out those and transmit coordinates to my artillery. Or if they find some spare time, the could dig out another shelter for a back up rest position, so they can switch positions frequently. Sweat prevents blood.
@ashleygoggs56792 ай бұрын
Its pointless endeavor, this is a war zone there are tank tracks everywhere to the point that you wouldnt know if they are fresh or not. Masking the tracks also puts the troops in machingun or sniper line of sight making it more dangerous. The risk to benefit ratio isnt worth it. Its also a dug out so its not like the SPA is leaving lots of tracks either it will likely always drive in its own tracks to avoid leaving more of them.

The workload , HOWEVER IS also doubled. If this self propelled howitzer’s manual suggests that it has a STANDARD crew complement of SIX, there is a reason for that. To give you a better picture, that would be like asking a doctor to remove one of your eye just because you already have one. Yes, those are for peacetime road use, not for wartime OR offroad use, let alone both. They are only there to protect the road surface (which is hardly a significant concern in wartime) and give greater grip (maybe) on hard roads where the tracks don't bite. I'm amazed that was not covered in training. My father (ex-Major, Royal Artillery) would have been appalled.
@Kris155mm2 ай бұрын
@@phillee2814 Removing the track pads would have no effect whatsoever and for winter we have spikes fitted every third track pad space. In all past recent conflicts we never remove the pads other than winter fitting the spikes. The vibration tends to cause more damage than benefit with them removed. As we suffered engine problems with cracks appearing in the fuel tank and other problems as a result of the pads removal and that was with spikes in Bosnia.
@phillee28142 ай бұрын
@@Kris155mm It seems the design of the tracks must have been changed then, so good to know there are spikes available instead of leaving smooth rubber providing all the grip. What was the performance on deep and slippery mud, with and without cleats?
@ashleygoggs56792 ай бұрын
Almost no military removes the pads even western armies dont do it. It takes far too much time to remove them and put them back on and contrary to popular belief it still adds grip even when not on tarmack especially when you have soft muddy terrain like this in ukraine. Tracks are thin which makes them easier to gum up in soft terrain. The only time tracks without pad is better is in the summerwhen the ground is harder.
@Kris155mm2 ай бұрын
@phillee2814 Hi the track spikes have been in place since we received the AS90 in 1992 and we only used them in snow and ice in 1996 in Bosnia 🇧🇦 and later on in Kosovo 1998 🇽🇰 Due to the mountain terrain and harsh winter. With the pads removed we had really bad problems through vibration, the fuel tanks cracked and we suffered various other problems and it felt like you were being shaken to death whilst traveling it was quite unpleasant on long journeys. Off road in wet muddy conditions was also a problem with or without pads the lead Gun was OK but the vehicles behind would start to have mobility problems due to the mud. On a normal move we travel in convoy to keep the trackplan less visible from above, 8 Guns followed by the 2 command posts then the Ammunition trucks and Reme and BQMS etc So you can imagine the state of play for the latter vehicles. In Ukraine 🇺🇦 they are being sensible and using the sniping Gun deployment ie 1 Gun positioned to give fire support instead of a whole Battery or using ARA method which is a 2 guns shoot and scoot. Having just returned from Ukraine it's starting to get wet and cold and the off road movement is a nightmare due to the arable soil turning so very quickly to sludge and making it very difficult to move off road whichever vehicle you are using track or wheeled and it doesn't matter if you have pads or not. Nature is pretty brutal sometimes:)
