Karl certainly redeemed himself by getting on top of that plane. Ricky tells Karl he's gifting him all these fabulous trips but there's always a catch. Karl has to be uncomfortable to be funny, but heck I like seeing him have fun.

They were introduced to Karl as their producer on XFM in London in the early 2000's and realized once he started talking more, that they struck gold with Karl and his takes on things. Included him more and more, did the podcasts after. And then TV-shows and stuff.

😄 Just remember that Karl actually thinks....that this is a real learn English programme. While Ricky knows full well this is just a wind up! Brilliant! And notice, that while Karl actually thinks that...he is acting like it's a real travel guide for Chinese people. LONDON EYE! It's basically "the worst English lesson ever" (as Ricky remarks) and, surprisingly, the worst real travel guide for Chinese people. A comedy masterpiece like no other.

The sad part is that Karl Pilkington is not an act. There's no alter ego being creatively funny here. He makes a living, thanks mostly (initially) to RG, by being himself. He's not that bright and says some genuinely ignorant things. At high school, he got one GCSE in history, grade E; it's almost impossible to achieve less. Once you know it's not an act, it's difficult to enjoy his material, if not impossible.
