Cornell University is Ivy League, top-tier stuff. He pretty much mentions Cornell every other sentence. Jim following up with the “where did you study” is the equivalent of when Ryan asked Bob Vance (Vance Refrigeration) “what line of work are you in Bob?”

Was just about to say the same thing! Andy loves to boast about being from Cornell, it is very important to him and he wants everyone to know that is where he went to college, so when Jim pretends not to recall what University Andy attended, he makes a disappointed/sad face.
@Muzz2110 күн бұрын
100%, it’s also a really expensive school so most people who go there come from rich families with tons of $$$. Everyone sort of just assumes if you went to Cornell you’re a “spoiled kid” type of scenario even if it’s not true.

I appreciate how the show was able to seamlessly bring new main characters (Andy and Karen) to the show by including them in the first episode of season 3 by showing vignettes of them in the Stamford office. That decision made it feel very natural, as it eased them in prior to them joining the Scranton branch.

100% Michael was hard to like in season 1. His arc, and the performance of Steve Carell to make Michael lovable is a thing of genius. Terrible boss, incredible salesman, lover of children.

I love in this episode how Michael and Dwight both were like "let's storm the CFO's private residence and berate him into keeping our branch open!" Like that behavior wouldn't immediately have resulted in a "you are both absolutely fired now leave before I call the police" moment 😂

A decision was made early in the run of the show that most of the talking head segments would be with the office (usually Stanley’s desk) in the background, but Jim would have an outside window in the background. This was to symbolize that Jim’s future was not in the office but everyone else’s was. When everyone thinks the branch is closing, their talking heads have an outside window in the background. That changes back by the end of the episode.

Stamford is considered part of the NYC metropolitan area, like Jchow said, they are connected by commuter rail, trains go between Stamford and NYC multiple times an hour (I live in NYC and have dated someone in Stamford). Scranton is relatively close to New York, but it is not quite commuter distance, but if you only went in to the office once or twice a week, you could live there. There is a commuter train in Port Jervis NY (less than an hour from Scranton) but it would probably be faster to drive.

What Josh did was Title hop. He got Dunder to give him a higher level position and title. Then he went to another company and said "I'm set to be the X of Dunder" So they're like "oh, he's really a person with high level experience" and gave him a similarly high level position at their company. Its like convincing your company to give you a Senior Manager title, then immediately updating your resume and putting it out with that title. Also, Yes, Josh was involved in the discussions to take over the North East. So the entire choice of which branch to close was part of that. Without him Dunder would be cutting a big staff and its manager, only to have to hire another manager, uncertain with that new person's capability. It really threw a wrench into the entire thing. This would be a nightmare for a company. Since they weren't closed for geographic reasons, there would be no reason to still close Scranton since it has a manager. Also, in my opinion the numbers of Scranton aren't bad, they could event be better than the other place, its just they liked Josh as a manager more (which kind of makes sense) if you compare the two's behavior. Also, Stables IS the big shot in the US the only rival is Office Depot, which Staples has repeated tried to purchase, but the government has rejected it since it would create a monopoly. Staples is actually a major player in the world too, since its purchased major international distribution companies as well. From the show's perspective, it is the "brand" that Dunder is battling against, so you'll hear it from time to time.

Jim invited Karen because he's trying to convince himself that he's moved on from Pam. In his mind he can't keep hoping that Pam is available and set himself up for rejection again so he's trying to move on with someone else.

I honestly think the way the writers portray Josh here is a clear sign of how clueless they are about corporate America. They want us to think Josh was sleazy for leveraging an offer when if it were the other way around the company would fire everyone at the drop of a hat. Josh did nothing wrong
@maxtew652110 күн бұрын
I agree. But I believe the elevation of the quality of loyalty and Jim's reaction to Josh's decision were chosen to cast the office members we follow, particularly Michael, in a good light. If I could get a better position with Staples like him, I damn sure would've done it too, though.
@unc5410 күн бұрын
Josh did nothing wrong if this was a standard promotion but this was a branch merger and Josh had to know that if he left a ton of people working under him would be let go. I think that's why Jim responded so negatively to that because he could never see Michael put people who worked under him out of a job for his personal benefit.
@twichytail10 күн бұрын
Josh isn't wrong for getting a better job, he's wrong by how he chose to go about it. AT BEST, he could have let jan know first thing in the morning, and he still chose to waste everyone's time.
@maxtew652110 күн бұрын
@twichytail That's fair. I hadn't considered that aspect. Though I guess it might have been a thing where an offer letter was being signed by him THAT day and it was down to the wire. Who knows? But it wasn't the most courteous way to act in a workplace situation.

I've read and seen that the people making the show realized the strong negative reaction to Michael after the first season, and one of the ways they counteracted that while still keeping him mostly the same was to just change the reactions of the rest of the Office to him so that they were just a little bit nicer towards him and they didn't react as negatively towards him, by about 10 percent. He's still a flawed character, he still does a lot of the same stuff he did in the first season, but the subtle way they turned that negativity into laughter and eventually a character that was beloved was really smart.
@Avalee32510 күн бұрын
I think jim just said that bit to Karen at the end because he had decided to go back and wanted her there so he could potentially have her there as a buffer with Pam…? Almost like he wants to make pam jealous, but more subtle than that I guess. If that makes sense 🤷🏻♀️ He’s not sure he’s gonna date Karen or anything, but there will be another cute girl there and one he already knows, so maybe he’s hoping Pam will even just see their friendship and be jealous… just guessing, but that’s what I always thought.

Carrell started having successful movies during season 2 of The Office, but they were a bit up & down in terms of box office. Until the Despicable Me films, i don't think he would have risked his TV career on a film career. John Kryzinski didn't make it big until A Quiet Place.

The Office is great but the premise is stupid. There is no way any company would allow a documentary crew film all the inner workings of their business 24/7 and let alone for 9 years. There's no way people are reveling all these insane and sometime illegal acts, firings, affairs, and how would you get any work done? Once you pay attention to the amount of cameras that would be involved it's hard not to see it. Just in the meeting in Michael's office there are 2 cameras, sometime 3 in such a small space.

@ What's even dumber is the "documentary" that is finally made of the company is 9 episodes in total for the 9 years it covered. Not sure what production company would fund 9 years of paying multiple cameramen (maybe 4) 5 days a week for 498 weeks to produce a 9 hour documentary, that's about $1.6 million in wages alone.
