I've owned a pair of 'gulls (forty plus and featherweight) for fifteen years now, with 'expertise' based solely on familiarity with fifties motorcycles, a little commonsense and little more anxiety. Your videos have been a revelation. Thankyou for taking the trouble to share your evident wisdom. It's made a lot of difference.

I bought a seized 1954 Forty Minus, And due to your posts, I've managed to strip and fully rebuild the engine, and even get it running again. So Thank You for your posts they have been very helpful.

This video has been so use full. It’s great the way you were able to film from above and still get your work done. I learnt so much ready to strip down my little 40. The needle size information was perfect.

Great video - many thanks. I have just starting on restoration of a Forty Featherweight. The carb was a complete mess (everything seized up) but this video really helped me clean it up and get it back in working order. Will be watching your other Seagull videos as my project progresses.

Very thorough. Thanks so much! When my engine is running my carb is leaking right at the bottom of the cap. On low throttle it just drips constantly, when higher throttle it sprays. The float switch moves fine and everything in the bowl looks normal. Maybe it's something else?

Hi at 1:56 you simply pull your slide out. I have Villers V508C and my slide is stuck in the chamber. It slides up and down inside the chamber but will not come out the chamber like you are showing, is there something else that perhaps I need to take apart to release it? Thanks Drew
@barjhealy3 жыл бұрын
Hi Drew There can be a lip at the top of the chamber . Lightly sand the lip it should come out eventually
@DrewFixIt3 жыл бұрын
@@barjhealy thanks. I managed to get it out eventually. I think I have intermittent spark now. I have put a new plug in, sometimes it will spark but not consistently, so tomorrow I will try and take the flywheel off and see what the points look like I suppose? Cheers Drew

@@barjhealy yes I saw that! I was wondering if my cordless impact will spin it fast enough? That way I wouldn’t have to make up an adapter…

@@DrewFixIt yes it will easily spin it fast enough just take out the plug and put a drop of oil in the chamber first

Another great video. Just what I wanted to know about converting to 25 to 1.

Nice practical according to SOS, Villiers claimed you could run these down to 20:1 without changing the needle by lowering that needle screw up to three turns with "trial and error"!

Great video! I’m currently working through getting my seagull started again. I used it regularly until a wave broke on the air intake (a few days ago) and I haven’t been able to start it since. Any suggestions?

Another great video,very informative. I recently got my hands on a 40 minus. I managed to get it sparking but Im having a few problems with the carb. I cleaned as per your video and reassembled. when i turn the fuel tap on and give it a tickle it is slow to fill the bowl. Sometimes the fuel just keeps dripping off the bottom of the carb and the fuel needs to be switched off to stop it . No fuel seem to be going to the block as she wont fire. Any ideas as to where Im going wrong ?
@barjhealy5 жыл бұрын
It could be flooding if still drpping from carb. Shut of needle arm needs to be adjusted in carb
@stakenet5 жыл бұрын
Thanks I'll have a look at that tomorrow and see what happens.

I was wondering why there was no air-filter on the air intake port... could it be that it makes a suitable 'switch off the engine' switch if one covers it with one's thumb?
@lollyandtom4 жыл бұрын
I guess the lack of dust in marine environment means an air filter not important. You can stall the engine this way but will then be flooded and hard to re start.....the carb should shut it down when cable is slack
@barjhealy4 жыл бұрын
Most outboards dont have a air filter. There is too much risk of a filter getting damp or wet

Is that a Limerick accent I hear? I'm a Corbally man myself.. I have just been given a 1954 Little forty. serial # LS19821 I recently overhauled a 1965 Johnson 6hp, works a treat now. But I'm in the dark about the seagull. Is there a forum or a site to buy replacement parts? Thanks.

Saving old seagulls you can get parts

Performance wise, what would you recommend , the amal carb or the villers? curious to know cheers.

+MrOtix both are the same really. Analysis probably a bit better on the century models. I like the bing carb you can run anywhere from 10/1 to 25/1 with no conversion Thanks For commenting
