'Walk Away From Love' was Ruffin's biggest solo hit since his 1968 huge hit 'My Whole World Ended' which was released after his firing from The Temptations. This 1975 hit was right in the middle of the Disco era and was produced by Van McCoy who had a huge hit himself with 'The Hustle'.

Sadly enough David Ruffin was one of many artists who found out that life outside of Motown wasn't all that easy. Also he was very difficult to be around, he was a brilliant performer and singer but he didn't have Berry Gordy in his corner like Diana Ross or even Smokey Robinson did. Van McCoy also worked with Gladys Knight & The Pips in their pre motown days and The Shirelles. The show you are watching him on is American Bandstand who made his first performance as a member of The Temptations. They, like The Four Tops, and Smokey Robinson appeared on Bandstand from the 1960's to the 1980's. Sadly he had a bad drug problem adn when he died of a overdose his fiances were in such dire straits he didn't have proper burial funeral. Michael Jackson paid for the funeral and Eddie Kendricks got arrested for being a deadbeat dad. When they were inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame, only Otis Williams collected his trophy. It was his only hit, but he did return in 1982 for Standing On The Top.

"My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)", "I Lost Everything I've Ever Loved", "I'm So Glad I Fell For You", "Common Man" "No Matter Where", "Who I Am" etc.

My answers relate to the UK music scene at the time. Many people knew of the Tempations (as they were by far the most prolofic act on the Tamla Motown label) but did not know of David Ruffin. His brother, Jimmy Ruffin had lots of UK top 20 hits and was very well known in the clubs. Please review Turn Back the hands of time by David & Jimmy Ruffin as it is unusual to hear them together. Loved your reaction to this timeless tearjerker.

Motown wasn't just one label, The Motown Record Corporation consisted of more than a dozen imprints, each with its own roster of artist and distinctive style. David Ruffin, Diana Ross, Mary Wells, The Supremes and the Four Tops were on the Motown imprint, Martha & The Vandellas, The Temptations, Kim Weston and The Contours recorded on the Gordy label. Tamla, the first of the corporations labels was home to The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Barrett Strong, The Marvellettes, Brenda Holloway, The Isley Brothers just to name a few. The Motown sound, was as varied as its roster of recording artist.

David Ruffin was dealing with drug addiction and some serious domestic issues. In my opinion David Ruffin created something no one else but he could do! His drug addiction induced wreck of a life that caused The Temptations to kick him out of the group could not erase the vocal talent he had.

This was his last top 10 hit on the Billboard US Pop chart in late 1975 early 1976. Van McCoy was responsible for reviving David's career. David also had an R&B hit in the summer of 1976 with "Everything's Coming up Love". It is one of my favorite songs of his. There is a video on KZbin from an appearance on Soul Train with David singing this song. It would be great if you would play that on your channel.
