I treat it the same way I treat buying new books. It's the Umberto Eco concept, he owned thousands (tens of thousands) of books but died before he read them all, but the intent, the want to pursue the stories and knowledge in those books is what matters almost more than the completion of the books themselves, it shows a person strived to learn and feel more than he could in one lifetime, it's humanity and hope. It's the same with models, the want to paint them and play with them and experience them is almost as important as actually painting and playing with them.

not gonna lie this sounds completely like trying to put a virtuous spin on the want of satisfying dopamine hits of buying things. i'm absolutely not shaming anyone, not what i'm here to do, but also it is absolutely worth some in the hobbyist collection sphere taking a deeper look at the mechanisms of action behind their behaviour. shame is bad, awareness is not

I have spoken about this in my own vids, and with other creators, but I don't put much truck in the whole "pile of shame" thing. I delight in purchasing things and am more than happy to leave them in the box until I get to them. For me it's a simple thing as I grew up poor and never had the money to be able to get what I wanted, and I didn't even really want to put the pressure on my parents to talk about what I might like. A lot of my models were proxies, and we were pretty much OG Poorhammer players. Now, at 41, I shamelessly buy the things I wanted when I was 14. I'm good with it. lol
@BroadswordWargaming2 жыл бұрын
100%, well said. It's kind of the message I wanted to get across, initially. Enjoy whatever you want to enjoy (if you can). I get some joy out of looking through stuff, planning projects and reading stories about the game. I will sell some, and I'd like to finish more, but it's been geat to see the progress throughout the past few years.
@amn10882 жыл бұрын
If you can do that responsibly that fine, in the end is a lot of people in this hobby its not responsible, its a strait addiction. I have seen people pull out more stuff than they could ever build and paint in years if they worked on it daily for hours. It starts to become clear that a lot of people have these issues and are addicted to purchasing/a compulsive hoarder. We all fall into these issues. I know I got way to much when I started. I am seriously tappering off my purchases to 1-2 things I really want and things I will work on within days of purchasing. Like right now I bought every KT box mostly because its limited and I love the game, I also buy the stuff for Aeronautica that tends to get printed once and never again like books and cards. After that I wont buy anything unless I am going to work on it right away.
@evilfuzzydoom2 жыл бұрын
Look that's a way of looking at it (same) but at some point a hobby collection starts to get so big that it starts to cost money in upkeep because you need to rent or own a house that will fit it all. It's a financial liability going into the pile, and eventually the pile itself becomes a financial liability. It's important to make yourself happy, but it's also important not to let it ruin you financially!

This rings true EXACTLY my situation! Back in uni (c. 2000) I could only _dream_ of owning any Warhammer minis - let alone minis of _any_ range! Now I no longer visit GW stores to “window shop” - I am working from home in an office lined with Billy bookcases filled with AoS, WarHammer, and D&D books and models - most models still unbuilt and in their boxes. I have my own mini Warhammer store of my own now: _just for me_ - it helps with the impulse spending (although, admittedly, there _is_ still some space to fit some _more_ boxes)…

Sadly my money goes on paying bills right now, the spare cash has dried up since everything started spiraling out of control regarding the cost of living. I've actually gone back to repaint a few forces as honestly it gives me a lot of joy. I have plenty of armies since I've been collecting since the late 90s so I can't complain... When the paint runs out however that will be a dark day (hopefully things will turn around by then)... Enjoy your hobby and make the most of your piles of shame... May the pool of choice never run dry.

Its called pile of opportunity. Why would I be ashamed of stuff that brings me joy? I think the selfshaming in geek/nerd etc culture is actually a huge problem. We should as a community be much more self accepting, positive and assuring. Language is the key to that, as it is the operating system for our thinking. Having negative connotations al over the place on our hobby is harmfully for a lot of people regarding their mental health. Think and speak positive about our hobby!

What is most shameful is that Ollie didn't even talk about what of his pile of shame he finished in the last 3 years. My tip for Ciara on the Orks is the following: place one minimum sized unit on your painting table and everytime you do any painting of any other miniatures you have to first paint all of a single color on those Orks first. Example: Day 1 "I'm going to paint miniature X today, but first I'll paint all of my Orks base skin color" - Ciara. Day 2 "I'm painting miniature Y today, but first I'll paint all of the washes on my Orks skin" - Ciara Day 3 "I'm painting miniature Z today, but first I'll paint all of the highlights on my Orks skin" - Ciara Day 4 "I'm painting miniature A today, but first I'm going to paint all of my Orks leather bits. Oh look at how that skin is so beautifully done now!" - Ciara I hope this inspires you to figure out a way to better tackle your pile of shame. As for Ollie... I hope this also helps to inspire you as well... but I'm beginning to wonder if you're a lost cause... currently. ;P

I remember about a decade ago picking up the original Battlechest for World of Warcraft. At the time I was a naive, wet-behind-the-ears little nerd who was still trying to be cool and so felt a little embarrassed to be buying something that it seemed like so many people looked down upon for being too intensely geeky. I took the box to the counter and ended up having a lengthy conversation with the shop assistant, who was also a player. At the end of the conversation, he said "Have fun!", and with those two simple words, all of my reservations about whether or not I should've been buying the game just blew away; I realised then that I was buying it for the sole reason that it should've been bought - to have fun! Life is too short to worry about these things, and as long as you're not getting yourself into financial or emotional trouble by buying and enjoying them, why shouldn't you? It's nice to see this sentiment shared, and that people still see the hobby for what it's always been about - having a bloody good laugh!

After watching this I can say I have accumulated quite the collection of projects as well over the couple years. Some things I have put into my hobby that have helped me get through some of the back log. 1. Oganization, have a system of what is new in box/ready to build, ready to prime, work in progress / ready to paint. 2. Have the models stored in a better storage system than sitting loose or in boxes and hidden, I use plastic containers from margrin, cream cheese, sour cream to store small or each individual projects that are built (conainters are washed out of course first), then also label what is inside. If it must be in a box leave it in the box it came in and mark what is inside such as new on spru and how many in the box 3. I created a Hobby goals list listing the projects I wanted to accomplish this year, caliing it the Year of Finishing Projects. The list started small with only what I think I can accomplish and as things get checked I added another to the list to keep the ball rolling. So far I have completed 10 projects, not all are starting from new, some are touch ups to models or finishing a painted model to add that final touches. that also makes me feel good about acomplishing something. I also have mixed in both small and large projects for balance. The other thing I have done specifically in 2022 is put a stop to buying big boxes unless I really want everything in it. Have fallen for the FOMO for that last couple previous years but now after developing a resistance to buying things it has helped control the collection. Lately I see the boxes and say oh that is cool I am fine waiting for the one thing in the box later down the road when it will come out on its own a few months later. On top of that I have been more looking at used on trade shops or facebook groups, some times ebay but always see the scalpers there more so. Hope this helps you guys and anyone else in the comments. Cheers.

Well Olly and Ciara as I was meant to be moving houses to a swanky new location, started dismantling my man-cave and OMG what did I find that I thought I'd lost, boxes of Space Wolves (old style) never looked at , never touched and certainly never to be completed as Primarus took over with cooler models that I did complete. I will say I have always found it good to have like 1-3 projects that are planned/available but not your primary focus. It gives something to fall back on for a break, unexpected free time, and any other situation. Recently had no internet service for a week and I wish I had a model or army in need to work on. There is the other side of this though, where I do have models from many points of me dipping my toes into 40k in a variety of forms. Some Chaos Undivided, Dark Elves, Drukhari, and Genestealers all from over 15 years and none fully finished.

I make a list of 2-3k points at a time. I build and finish that 2-3k then expand in that faction or make a new 2-3k list for another. So far have ~4K of Tau and ~5k of Necrons. Thinking of either Sisters of Battle, Custodes or Craftworld as my third army. I don’t buy extras of something or a new army until those points are done. Only exception is timed/exclusives.

If you collect models from other manufacturers, the parts tend to be interchangeable (for example Frostgrave, Wargames Atlantic and many others) and also much much cheaper than GW stuff. I have a collection but its only the boxed sets that falls into "shame" category. Everything else is ingredients for kitbashing. Also, a box of sprues will contain 4-6 identical sprues, so its easy enough to sell them on ebay or trade them with someone else. My biggest hurtle has been grinding though things from Kickstarter. The value is amazing but its important to remember the time commitment you signed up for. That said, Kickstarter is great because it can give you many months to clear out a backlog before something new arrives and adds to your pile!

The unbuilt models in particular I think I will never get round to assembling and painting. They piles also take up so much space, I probably spend more time moving them aside to get to other things than enjoying each beautifully sculpted model. Plastic that I purchased because I do wish to one day build and paint is money well spent. Tomorrow were I to purchase many of the models that I already have would often cost me as much at 100% more than what I paid for them. In most cases at least a 50% increase in cost over 2 years ago. I've never understood how people get to this point (I mean, obviously everyone has different tolerances and behaviors, so I get it on that level) because historically I always had less money than painting time. Then I bought some second-hand lots. That put me in a situation where I did have something you could call a pile of shame. It must be coming up to 10 years since that purchase now and I'm actually getting to the point where there are very few grey models left and even fewer unassembled. That said, I do have a box of daemonettes I doubt I'll ever do anything with. I bought them with the intention of painting in the contrast style (before contrast even became a thing). Never even got one painted because I realized I had no idea what colour scheme I wanted to use.

I keep my entire game collection (warhammer included) in a spreadsheet including my purchase price paid. I started it up after an unfortunate flooding incident and lots of issues with insurance. It has been VERY eye opening how much I actually spend on my hobby.

@@3Xero3 Oh dear, so do I but I originally did it to keep track of time and activities on army painting projects that my friends paid me to do, and to see if I was breaking even on the hobby. I don't paint for people any more but I still track everything, # of figures, purchase price, duration, cost of materials, prep time, paint time, detailing, decaling, basing etc etc.

Maybe paint one more Grey Knight and have a six person Kill Team. The rest can be sold off. Grey Knights are great and easy to play in Kill Team and you’re 80% there

I don't want to be mean but the state of these minis is a bit strange. Just throwing them around. My pile is either on the sprue or primed and ready to paint.

I’d sell all that never will be finished.

4:49 What’s the shame rate of drinking red wine straight from the bottle? I love the video and your chanel, even is I am exclusively painting and playing in the Age of Sigmar. My motivation to get rid of my pile of shame: every time I play with an unpainted model I buy everyone at our community club a drink. Turns out that didn’t make me ‘the guy who only plays with painted models’ but rather ‘the guy who drinks a lot when he plays’.

I have 800points of CSM unpainted that I dont really want to do because I switched over to HH. Will probably break them/unassemble them for bits

Just had a funny thought, when you stepped on you Slaanesh model, I had a picture of a mighty chaos god stepping on a smaller deamon. "Oops I nearly stepped on you." 😂😂😂
