I am a CNA and I'm doing better than the Nurses I work with. I'm making $20 an hour. I have no kids, I rent an apartment, I don't have a car, I have a mo-ped (I'm in an urban area). My only expenses are clothes and my monthly gym membership. I did my pre-reqs for LPN, paid out of pocket. I'm going to pick up a few travel CNA contract for about a year to make up enough money to pay for the actual LPN program out of pocket also. Oh, and I have $5,500 in savings that I never touch and most of the RN's that I work with have 3+ kids, a huge house and car payment and are broke. My rent is $625. My first check covers all of my bills. I'm at the club once a week enjoying myself, my facebook pics reflect a nice lifestyle. Because my life is nice. I always pull in 10 hours of over time per week too. Life is about choices. Anyone can make better choices if they want. As far as clothes, I love the thrift store, shopping online, Marshall's, TJMax. My bills are always paid up 3 months ahead, too.

Oh and what's hilarious is that an LPN tried to call me BROKE for driving a Mo-ped (scooter) to work. I laughed. My mo-ped cost $1,200 literally 4 years ago. Gas & Insurance is low too. And I told her she's the broke one with her 4 kids and mini-van. Her face went BLANK. Shaking in disbelief.

Been a nurse 14 yrs. I've known broke nurses throughout my career. The one thing these nurses had in common, is the relationships they were in. The husbands/boyfriends they had didn't work. They supported these men plus all their kids. Its not easy, especially on one income. Another reason is poor financial choices. They all bought expensive SUV and took expensive vacations with these men that didn't contribute anything in the household. They didn't buy a house and continue to pay rent. Some didn't even contribute to 401k.

I remember years back when I first started working a government job on the state level, one of the senior employees who'd been working at that facility for over 20 years was telling me how when she and her husband (who happened to work for the government at the city level) retire they will have a little over a million dollars to live on outside their government pension. She explained to me the importance of putting aside money towards the additional retirement account benefits that state employees can get. She said the moment she was eligible to sign up for it, she did so and only started with as little as $10. She said when she would work overtime/mandated hours and whatever pay increase she got, she would have it deposited into that separate retirement account and kept her lifestyle the same...no influx or upgrades or spending sprees. She said she knows how her peers at the workplace laugh and talk about her behind her back in terms of the way she dresses and how she doesn't put a lot of effort in her hair or place focus on buying things new. But the one thing that she has is no debt and a very healthy retirement income. She and her husband had three homes, which one was inherited, and of the other two included a vacation home/cabin by a fishing lake where they planned to spend a lot of their retirement days at. They sold the inherited house "because we really don't need three houses" as she said and used part of the proceeds to add to their retirement and renovate that dream vacation cabin of theirs which was a very modest cabin that they were able to purchase out right, no loan. She has since retired with her husband. Now, I don't know why she decided to share that information with me. But it has stuck with me ever since, and I truly appreciate that she did. That was going on 10 years ago.

there's a lot of 'broke' nurses also, because we're medicating our burnout/stress/anxiety etc.... and the "retail therapy" keeps us in the awful job we hate in the first place. retail therapy ends up costing waayyy more than medical therapy. it's an easy trap to fall into. Just because you have savings, doesn't mean you're not broke.

No lies told here! Here are just a few signs of brokeness: (1.) Earning 5,6, or 7 figures and spending all of those figures, because you've believed the hype about next pay period there will be more. (2.) Not having an emergency fund that doesn't hurt your regular income. If you can't build an emergency fund without wondering if you'll have enough for other important things you are broke. (3.) Not being able to take time off because you need the next pay period's funds. (4.) Paying bills and finding yourself hurting until the next check (5.) In line at the "returns" counter because you need gas, but got a whole Maybach outside. (6.) Nothing set up that allows your money to reproduce itself while you are sleeping (Stocks, Index's, ETF's, etc) Please remember, Broke isn't just what is or isn't in your bag, but what is or isn't in your mind!

Tawanda, you got those responses because your honesty and humility brings out the jealousy and hatred and self loathing in some who know you are speaking the truth but can’t bring themselves to admit it.that same bullying, adversarial, angry spirit is a VERY common trait seen in those nurses who love to attack, accuse, and berate other nurses. They are here hate-watching your videos so can criticize you. You are 100% correct. Unless a person is independently wealthy they ARE either broke or not far from it. All it takes is for you to lose your job and face challenges finding another one, or not being able to milk that overtime clock anymore, or having your hours cut. If you have credit card debt, student loans, a car note, monthly rent…whatever you owe makes you a debt slave to somebody else.As long as you owe that money you have to go punch somebody’s clock and spend many hours working every week to earn an income to make the payments. That by default makes a person broke.

I’m new to nursing and have been a stay at home mom for years prior to nursing. Being a stay at home mom thought me the value and importance of saving. I started gardening and couponing to stay under budget. I thank God that with one income at the time we were able to still travel and live comfortably. Unfortunately this type of lifestyle makes people on that rat race of working to buy useless things. It's so refreshing to see a fellow nurse speaking against the traps of being a nurse and making money! And it's definitely true- I gained a lot of clarity on things once I finally quit my job, all of a sudden a lot of things a thought mattered, didn't. Your so right, I know a few nurses that's broke. They think because they can make the payment they can afford it. One that's very close to me have more liabilities than assets. we live in a world that everyone can look like they have money but they are really living on credit. Then you talk investing to them they start talking about loosing money but you literally give your money away on a daily basis. Give yourself some of that money and cut back on things that's not of importance.
@TheScienceNerddAkemi

I've never understood that mindset; they're scared and hesitant to invest because of the risk, but like you said, they give their money away on a daily basis to other things.

Yesterday my oldest though I made her pay off all her after pay and had her close that account aND TOLD HER NO MORE OR SHE HAS TO M OVE OUT. 🎉 and the fun and hangin had to end. The situation out there is getting real and I’m seeing in the church group and our homeless out reach program/ meal sharing program. Am retired at 38 by saving and investing 50-65% of our household income. Paid off home, no debt, I owe nothing to nobody. I rather eat chicken and rice everyday then to go back to work. Anything that allows me to stay home am willing to cut out and doesn’t feel like self deprivation. No she's not broke if that's what you mean or maybe the last part of your comment is just a rhetorically/generally speaking (?, lol). But yeah... she's trying to encourage nurses to do pretty much what you're demonstrating can be done. I'm not a nurse myself but I worked alongside nurses at facilities ran by the state at my former state job place of employment. They are doing pretty much the same thing. They have built businesses and homes in their country of birth (Phillipines, Nigeria etc.) while holding down a lifestyle here in the United States. Oh it can most definitely be done in any line of work as well if you decide to diversify your income in a different manner versus using the money for instant material gratification while racking up debt. Otherwise, I can most definitely relate to how you move and my husband and I are planning and moving towards the same direction... paying off debt, investing, and holding down our life in the United States as we seek to have homes and possibly businesses in his/ my family's country of birth being Ghana, West Africa 😊.

No, you ARE NOT lying. I'm not a nurse, but I can definitely tell you this much... I'm not trying to be working the way I do when I'm 60, if at all. I am on a mission, and I've got my husband on board. We are going to be aggressively trying to pay off our house (among other debt) so that by the time our youngest child completes college which right now, he's 16, I have the option to continue on or leave full-time employment altogether and maybe just do something part-time, or seasonal. I have since discovered and I definitely understand that the best thing that I can ever give myself is time and the only way I'm going to be able to have that time is to drastically reduce or eliminate the debt. So, between now and then, I am more deliberate with how I diversify my paycheck and implement ways to save or reduce costs around the house.

She’s speaking truth. This country teaches how to be a consumer not a producer. China is the total opposite. Chinese teach their children how to be producers of products, not consumers. They just put in self check out at a supermarket near my job. I was surprised when I visited one day to purchase some groceries; and I saw the self checkout machines where cashiers use to be. Those cashier jobs are gone thanks to AI, I guess 🤷🏿‍♀️
