This is a short description of a Minimum Equipment List, or MEL, and how it works. The MEL is how we are able to operate when we have broken equipment. I hope you enjoy!

Shaun, Very good explanation of use of the MEL. It has been a little while since I worked on a G4 but forgive me to say that selecting "ND OFF" is using the selector switch at top of overhead panel. The knob you showed was just the brightness knob. I'm retired now but anyway good job. Lots of times the filters get clogged with carpet fibers and the unit (DU) fails. Each DU has a conical shaped filter that needs cleaning on a scheduled basis.

I was finally able to post my C172 flying video for kids. Had to wait a bit, while I got permission to actually show GoPro's attached to the windshield during takeoff and Landing, but after CASA here in Aus said it was ok, I put it up last week. As being the pilot / A n P mech this is where I would have earned my pay. I would have taken my pilot hat off, put on my mechanics hat and went trouble shooting, fixed or MEL’d it. If we were at our home base we would have had an extra screen in stock and I would have thrown it in. If we had a piece of equipment that was common to several of our aircraft, we always had those items in stock. This would have been one of them. Happy flying !

Great tech vlog as always! I have my 120h TT and 20h PIC. When I worked for SAS (SK) as Red Cap, one day I had a flight with FI to KEF, a 757 the copilot tells us that they are AOG due to a snag. They were just going to inform us, the ground crew that had to cancel the flight and they were going to call OCC/OPS and let them now. So I asked the FO «Did you check your MEL?» He looks like a question mark, thinks for a few sec and says «No, I will do it now» He runs into the cockpit and less than a munute later he calls and says that we can start to board in 10 mins! Another time I was a pax on a FF (Tower air) from OSL-MIA. The flight was 3h late from the gate due to a strobe light did not work. They had to get a new one flown in from SVG. Once onboard we was told that 10/12 lavs was U/S. That was FF for you! There 747 was all line no before 50! Made in 1969/70! Pan Am was the most worn. BA/LH had kept there 747s as good as new almost.

The redundancy is for, that you will not get big problems, when one device quits in fight. But when you takeoff with one device broken, then you don't have a redundancy anymore. When then one device fails, then you are in trouble.

They are not making new ones anymore, they just refurbish the ones already in service. There are still several hundred planes out there flying that use them (G-IV and G-V both use them). While the demand is there, they will continue to support it.

Can you put any data on any display, or is each display dedicated to one function? In other words, if that unit failed in flight, could you bring up engine instrumentation on another display to continue the flight? Same thing for other display info. Can you give up nav data on one seat to get primary flight displays for both pilots (assuming display 1 or 6 failed in flight)

CRT displays? If so it would be nice to go to newer avionics ( ouch except for the painful cost ) one could also lose a few hundred pounds of glass and lead. It is nice that they are "plug and play". More than likely a bad power supply, thank god they don't use cheap Chinesium components in these items so MTBF can run for quite a few years between major service. Wonder what a refurb unit will cost?

@falcondrvr200
@falcondrvr200 3 жыл бұрын
IIRC, they were around 40k back in 2015 but I could be confusing that with another component. Most operations have a contract with Honeywell that sort of “insurers” the components, so when they fail, you don’t come out of pocket for the whole cost. I don’t remember the full details but I think the program was called Bright Parts and Duncan serviced the program for me. I’m just an airline cargo pilot now so I don’t have to give a crap anymore and have forgotten many details!

@davidgreed1885
@davidgreed1885 3 жыл бұрын
Circuit breaker would obviously be checked, then swapping the units would determine if the wiring/bus was at fault - that is, the the known good unit would not light up once the swap has been completed - and based on Shaun's explanation would result in a no fly scenario if the wiring/bus fault could not be fixed there and then.

Does that mean in this case that the pilot flying must be in the left hand seat?
@bruce2357
@bruce2357 3 жыл бұрын
That would not make sense since one pilot could end up disabled. Seems more likely that the unit that can be inop. is on the right side since the captain is ultimately in charge. The right seat has what he needs to fly.
@oldschoolnomad813
@oldschoolnomad813 3 жыл бұрын
Not 100% sure but perhaps Shaun can chime in on this but IIRC the MEL is tuned to each carriers operation policy. If you notice when he was flying PRD69 he was always in the right seat. Now with Alerion the PF is always in the left seat and PNF in the right. Same with the checklists, flying PRD69 they never called feet on the rudder peddles/off the floor or "Blue up / Brown down" on the artificial horizon .
@CorporatePilotLife
@CorporatePilotLife 3 жыл бұрын
The MEL can be tailored to the operation, but they are generally based on the MMEL, or Master Minimum Equipment List. Nothing is written that the left seat pilot must fly, but in this case, it certainly would make sense.
