That was available several moves earlier, and I know it’s easier when observing, but watching Dave seemingly try to get his queen out of the f file pawn and then not go Qd1+ was quite frustrating to watch.

Carlini sits with King on C2 while Dave sits with Queen on F1 and 2 Pawns on E2 and F2. He moved the P from E2 to E1. I would have moved Q to D1(check), Carlini would have to move the K to B2 and then I move the P from F2 to F1->QF1. Dave could have check mated Carlini after several moves but he had to move fast and time was running out.

Read it again. Its about taking the king. In this format, if a player in check moves without clearing the check his opponent can finish the game by taking the king. It makes sense, the move was illegal anyway so stopping the clock and debating the matter is messier and leads to the same result. Check out " Magnus Carlsen's double illegal move! " on KZbin to see a variation on this!
