The high school I went to use to have a bamboo forest near the football field. As you can imagine, over time, people ended up making paths and "rooms" within the thicket. Walking through there on a Friday night during a football game was always fun. Also, it was always smokey and had a peculiar smell.

With my bamboo, I wait until it's woody then saw the culms off at the base. Then you end up with poles that you can dry and use in projects. Good for making garden supports for climbing plants.

I have removed a lot of bamboo. I would recommend using a stump bucket with the grapple on the large machine to dig it out. Several companies make this attachment . I have the one by Titan , not too expensive and has held up well . Since you're in an open area you don't need to cut it down. It actually gives the two teeth of the grapple something to grab onto so you can dig and pull out good-sized chunks. Then use the smaller machine with the grapple to transport it. When it is tall the weight actually helps it come out of the ground as the tip of the stump bucket gets under the rhizome clumps. At that point you can install the barrier and backfill the area.
@GCFD
@GCFD 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great way to remove it Robert! Here, it was more of a side project so I didn't bring my root rake or stump bucket to dig them out. Hopefully they can starve the rhizomes with the methods I used at my place. If they want to really get rid of it I can dig it out properly. We shall see.

@@GCFD I agree with Robert I am used to dealing with smaller scale infestations being in the UK we generally have much smaller gardens. However the basic principle of Robert's method is the same as mine, except scaled up. There is no way around it; if you want to get rid of bamboo you need to dig out the rhizomes.

Our invasive species is Scotch broom. A longhandled prybar was developed to get under the roots and pry it out. Napalm and C-4 would work better but may cause some issues with the local constabulary.

Bamboo is *so* invasive and is a massive pain. When I was a teen living with a friend's family, one weekend during summer my friend's parents decided to put him and I to work getting rid of the bamboo. They knew cutting it down wasn't good enough. We had to cut it all down, then use pickaxes and shovels to dig up and pull out all the ribosomes in the hot sun. Almost 40 years later and I *still* hate bamboo with a passion! 😁

Bamboo is so invasive it drives you crazy. Here in the Philippines where I now live, we cut the bamboo down with a machete, then stack it all in the growth area and burn it. Sometimes your lucky and it won't grow back, but 7/10 times it will grow again and you just have to keep repeating the process until the the roots system burns itself out from trying to grow back again. I wouldn't plant it unless you're going to harvest it on a regular basis.

I think burning is the best way to get rid of it too. Using the brush hog was slow and made a mess, but it did reduce the volume substantially.

Take a trencher and run it along the fence line. Get some used pieces of corrugated metal and place in the trench. That separates what you are keeping from the area that you want to get rid of. Then you can spray and kill anything that comes back without killing the bamboo on the neighbors side.

Probably the trench digger with a small trench along the fence line. You can line with a barrier and fill with sand to slow them from spreading. Or if the trench is accessible to prune the rhizome back. But just knocking them down is gonna let them spring up pretty quick haha.

Glad you mentioned the roots... Chris over at Letsdig18 cleared a few acres that had that roughly mid last year... The only true way to get rid of it is to root rake the ground with a dozer removing many inches of sub-soil. ( obviously top down will not work ) It is relentless and will continue to grow... And if i recall you have to be careful when moving it, any remnants will resprout like a weed.

That's the only way to get rid of it in one pass. Methodically knocking it back down will eventually deplete the rhizome of its stored energy, as I have done at my place. That's a much longer and ongoing process though.

I have done a lot of research on bamboo. I wanted to install a lot of it to create a privacy hedge because it is so dense and I like how it looks. I learned how invasive it is and it can even break through concrete with its rhizomes. I went with the next best thing which is called miscanthus giganteous. I had to install a root barrier 2 to 3 feet into the ground to prevent the rhizomes from spreading. It didn’t turn out how I liked it and I ended up digging it out. 2 to 3 years later there was still little plants popping up. Bamboo is technically a grass but it is the strongest structure even better than wood. Civilizations have been using it to create structures.

I’ve dealt with them a few times and the only way I could get rid of them is digging the whole area up and taking everything out. Its never easy getting it all out and sucks! You can’t even plant it around here anymore. Against the law. That’s how I got one job removal was the neighbor was selling his place and the lady next door got it where they couldn’t sell the home until bamboo was removed because it was creeping in her yard. It was a crappy thing to do but she did it and I was paid to take it out.
@GCFD
@GCFD 2 жыл бұрын
Yes that's a great way to remove the bamboo in one step but the homeowners in this case didn't want to spend that much on it since they were focusing on bigger projects. I'm hoping they can work to starve the rhizomes over time and get good results as I have at my place.

@GCFD
@GCFD 2 жыл бұрын
The pile would have been much, much larger as bamboo doesn't have enough weight to pack down. The homeowner had cut some down by hand and that pile was larger than the pile we made. You've got to shred it somehow. I don't think the brush hog was the best tool for that.

@GCFD

I thought about that too but that's a ton of labor! At that point they didn't want it cleaned up just knocked down. I was a little worried about driving the truck and chipper across the back yard but that might have been better if I had known they wanted it cleaned up too.

We have a half acre yard and it’s coming in from 2 sides (at least a half acre deep on the neighbors side). For the last year I’ve been using a saw attachment on my string trimmer. The hard part in doing this is getting low to the ground. Any inches left sticking up become nearly hard as stone and mosquitoes breed in the water that collects in little cutoffs (lesson learned). My opinion is..brush hog it down, dig out the roots on their side of the yard, dig an open trench 3 feet deep and cut anything that tries to jump over. Otherwise put in a steel barrier.

Those bamboos left in the background look all nasty, bent and scrappy. A small portion of this area could at least be better cleaned up with a machete, cutting them close to the ground so that the area looks more orderly & presentable rather than leaving it like a war zone.
@GCFD
@GCFD 2 жыл бұрын
For sure! We were already way over budget on this side project so the homeowners insisted on me not worrying about it and they would take care of it. I at least wanted to get the main part cleaned up (again, I did that for free since they originally wanted it just knocked down).

chainsaws don't work on it because of the fibers. The stems also fall over and pinch the chains tightly. A hatchet works well but can't cut low enough to the ground. It's awful stuff.

That job will last a few months. You have to dig out the runners. Your strategy of 'weakening' the rhizomes (by letting it grow) is very unlikely to work. You have to remove them it's the only way. The good news is that rhizomes are often quite shallow, usually within a few inches of the surface. I do it by hand primarily, but you could use a machine I suppose. Once you have followed and cleared the rhizomes as much as you can see or find, then you play the waiting game. When you see any growth appear above ground, find and remove the Rhizome. After a few months of that you will have solved your problem.

You have to dig a trench at least 12" down and install aluminium flashing to contain the underground stems from spreading. You also have to make sure the flashing comes up out of the ground high enough to contain them aboveground as well.
